Here we go on the build up for the poor mans 427. My Uncle took a D4TE 105 block and punched out hole # 6,7 & 8. We left #5 to show how it looks!

Here is a look from the top of the bar!

Here is a closer look at one of the holes.

Here is a side view of the # 6 hole looking forward at the #5 that isn't punched out yet.

Here is a look down in the #8 hole looking forward on #'s 7,6,5! As you can see the floor is real thin compared to a 427 block. He left a lip for the sleeve to fit into but the block doesn't leave much room for a real thick lip to begin with.

Right above the lip where that table top looking thing sticks up. That is about level with the Freeze plug hole. The Sleeves are going in dry. We are going to put Devcon around the bottom of the sleeve. Then once that cures, it will be hard blocked up to the top of that table top (or the bottom of the freeze plug hole).

Here is a picture from the out side of the block looking in the freeze plug!

I took the pics myself on this one. This engine will be street driven with 13to1 pistons in it. The sleeves are a .250 thick. The finish bore will be 4.25 with plenty of wall space to punch out if need to be one day.

Looks cool Wes...

December 2 2004, 1:15 AM

Are you going to cut out those trees? How about deburring the INSIDE of the block before you put the sleeves in? LOL!!

BTW, I tried to call you on the cell phone number you had when you came south, didn't go thru and the wife deleted your message off the answering machine and I couldn't find it on the caller ID.

It's 4:35 am local and the only computer access I have is at work...

December 2 2004, 2:39 AM

If I'm not at home, where do you think I am? LOL!!!

I shouldn't be working this weekend, but the boss lady may have plans for me. I'm supposed to set a toilet for a guy at church one of these days soon and I'd like to get that out of the way before too long. I'm trying to sell my '76 F-250 S/C long bed 2wd truck minus M&T and I've got a guy off of FTE that's here local in Midwest City that's interested in it and I think he's supposed to come out to the house this weekend to look at it.

I don't see anything wrong with that.

Looks like your'e doing a nice job. 1/4 inch sleeves are pretty thick and with hardblock I seriously doubt if you have any problems. It's nice to see enterprising young men at work. Good luck!

Way kewl Wes, I was talking to my machine guy about

December 2 2004, 7:12 AM

doing the same thing to a 105 block I have. He says he has done similar jobs, but he thinks it best to bore and sleeve one bore at a time alternating side to side. He thinks it keeps things together better and that the block will not shift as much as it would if you take all the cylinders out.

I don't have a clue if that is a valid point or not, what do you think?

Gessford Machine has done it like Wes is doing...

December 2 2004, 8:07 AM

but I see what you mean, it just sounds like a ton more work setting and reseting things, sounds like the hard way to do it, and probably exactly the way I would do it, LOL!!!

You can do that or do them all at once too.

December 3 2004, 12:22 AM

By the time you do that and shove the sleeves in, you might have a little shift in it (may not). The block is going to be Blueprinted anyways! So its just one persons opinion on it Vs. another. The thing is that you will have the same results.

Wes, you bring new meaning to the phrase 'inside look '

December 2 2004, 1:25 PM

That is very impressive, inspired by diesel engine construction?

Since you are gutting most of it anyway, was there a special reason to start with a 105 block?

Looks great!

My Uncle use to be a Detroit Dealer at one time!

December 3 2004, 12:16 AM

He is a great engine builder! Not because he is my Uncle but he is well known around here for that. He has built Race engines to 24 cylinder PT Boat engines to everyday type stuff. And lots of diesel engines. This town was Huge for logging at one time. Warehouser had the Biggest Pine mill in the world in Klamath Falls, Oregon (That where I live).

Nothing special on the 105. Its just what we had laying around LOL.

Thats it

December 3 2004, 1:11 PM

Havent been down there since he opened up shop in Oregon. He used to be in Torrance, CA. but running a paint shop in CA is a regulation nightmare so he fled . I was thinking about making a run down there next year. We'll see . I may be changing jobs in a few weeks which may affect that decision. I'd love to see some of Ricks recent work. He used to do a lot of custom work but I think he's more into insurance work now.

Funny thing is that his cousin, Tom Prewitt left that area to go down to southern California and start his painting career. If you ever want to see Toms work you can turn on Monster Garage. He does a lot of the paint work on that show and is often featured..

Hey Wes, I gotta question...........................

December 2 2004, 6:41 PM

With those thick new walls, why the hardblock? Is it a matter of sealing or just making the block more rigid? Awesome project!! RonW

Interesting...

December 3 2004, 8:00 AM

My main concern would be the relatively un supported deck surface of the center cylinders, however, from the looks of your pics, the deck appears quite thick. I`ll be interested in hearing how it works out for you. I`ve never been to Klameth Falls, but my Jerico 4 speed has. I bought it from Terry Sherrill, who is a businessman there. He used to race a 57 Corvette in SS/AM, running mid 8`s. After he crashed the Vette in California a couple of years ago, he had a brand new Chevy Cavelier built, for the same class. Back in the 70`s & early 80`s, he ran NHRA Pro Stock. Compared to being in that Corvette, the Jerico must think it`s living a life of leisure in the Fairmont!!

I know Terry Sherrill Son!

December 3 2004, 12:28 PM

Terry owns a few business around here. The shop that he owns, I use to see him wash his race cars when they are home on the weekends. But now he rents it out to some auto body place I do believe or maybe he sold it. Not to sure.

The unsupported deck surface I think it will be alright! With all the machine work that's being done to it and then hard block the bottom of the sleeves. I wouldn't think that it would move! But you never know until you try!

By the way, are you in the process of building another 428???

Re: I know Terry Sherrill Son!

December 3 2004, 1:17 PM

I know Terry owns an Arby`s franchise, with his new Hansen built Cavalier, plus that big Monaco coach motor home & aluminum Gold Rush enclosed trailer, I figured he must be doing fairly well!! As for my Fairmont, I may just let it sit this year, & concentrate on my 85 Mustang Stock eliminator car. I`ve been wanting to put a Jerico in the Mustang for a while, now is a good opproutunity to use the one from the Fairmont. I have had acouple of people ask if the Fairmont was for sale, but I haven`t really thought about that.

Might have a suggestion re: Hardblock Hardblock and Bearings

December 3 2004, 4:05 PM

You might think about extra angle on the block when you fill each side to anticipate Minor and Major Thrust. That way you get the support where needed and potential more cooling to a larger part of the piston.
Another area I've learned about is a friend is a Ford Ind Rep and he mentioned the numerous main bearing failures of 302,351W and esp 460s from excessive heating in Marine applications from crud Mud/Sand and sludge building up in the bottom of the water jacket.
Keep an oil cooler in mind

It wont have allot of hard block in it~

December 3 2004, 9:12 PM

Just to the bottom of the water jacket plug is all! And with the thick sleeves, It will be real cool runner. You build most of your heat up at top then the bottom end of the sleeve. As for the bottom end will have a girdle!

1/4" thick?

December 4 2004, 11:24 AM

Did you mean the 390 block you started with had 1/4" thick walls? That could have withstood a 4.25" bore as is.

If the new sleeves a 4.25" inside diameter and .250" thick you realize that means they are 4.75" OD and not 4.5" . They'd need to be siamesed. That cuts out the small bridge of material on the deck and down below and gives less to anchor to.
