This is the post from before on this for those who missed it!

http://www.network54.com/Forum/thread?forumid=74182&messageid=1101977379

I didn't tell ya that this block started life as a 330! I didn't mention that from before. I did make a mistake on the sleeve thickness. Its a 1/8" thick.

Here are some pics and I hope you enjoy them.

We will be pressing in the sleeves by the end of the week. I will take some more pics of the progress that is made on this block.

Wes can you give an estimate on the labor hours on this project?

December 8 2004, 2:22 AM

Is it really cheaper to do it this way vs buying a 427 block? Thanks.

Last time I checked on price it was~

December 8 2004, 9:18 AM

about $650 for sleeves and all the work to be done! That included boring, sleeves pressed in and a deck job. That was before my Uncle started working for the guy who owns it. That is darn cheap I thought! I don't know very many places that would stuff sleeves in for that cheep (not around here)! But that was my deal with the owner since I had sent him a bunch of work for hes auto repair shop side of the house.

How are they getting sealed up?

December 8 2004, 10:05 AM

How are they sealing the cores up to keep the water out of the oil? Brazing ?

No Brazing~

Its a press fit. About .003 press fit. Then we are thinking of using epoxy (or something along those lines)at the floor of the block before we set the sleeves. Then devcon the floor to the bottom of the freeze plug. So we can use coolent to cool the rest and keep it streetable.

I will tell you how to save a few $$$$~

December 8 2004, 8:44 AM

Cut out the cylinder yourself. Use a cut off wheel. Cut the top and bottom out. Then 1/4 cut the cylinder. From that point, it will take about a 1/2 a day to bore, clean, Shove the sleeve in place!

I would think that it would be cheaper then buying a used 427 that needs alot of work to be done to it! I will find out and let you know.

Thanks for the update and...

December 8 2004, 8:18 AM

...I'm sure we would all love to know what your Uncles shop would charge a "paying customer" so we'll have good reference if we want to do that ourselves in our own part of the country. When you finish, a quick rundown of expenses and procedures would be awesome.

The photos are invaluable that you're posting, like they say 'a pictures worth a thousand words'.

Good luck on the project and keep us posted!

We plain on doing this out the back of my shop~

December 8 2004, 9:09 AM

My Uncle doesn't own the shop but he runs the whole thing. He thought of buying it from the owner but then we thought of buying some of the equipment and doing some stuff our self's right from my shop! This will help keep coast down. We have a boring bar but we need a few parts for it.

If this happens We would cut the forum members a deal for doing all this! I will keep you guys posted on that.

Poor man's 427 questions???

December 8 2004, 9:49 AM

What other blocks could be used for this?? 360?
Can you explain more about cutting out the cylinders-I'm not
getting it totally!? Could any good machine shop do the rest?
Thanks Tim

Yes~

December 8 2004, 10:37 AM

You can use other blocks to do this as well.

Ok, cutting the top and bottom of the cylinder. You can blow it out with a plasma cutter even. Go a 1" from the top of the deck down the cylinder. Cut all the way around inside the cylinder. Next we are going to cut the bottom of the cylinder all the way around. I think about 2" from the bottom of the bore up towards the deck. Cut all the way around. Now the cylinder will be lose inside of the block. Cut it from the bottom cut of the cylinder up to the top cut of the cylinder. You may want to cut it up into 1/3rds or 1/4. Pull out the peaces of cylinder out through the top of the deck.

This sound like allot of work but if you take it to a Machine shop to do it. Think of how much it will cost to do. If they leave the cylinder in place and try to bore it, then it takes longer to do the job (having to sharpen the bit more often, Heat build up and so on). If you do the cutting of the cylinders it will save you $$$. Talk to a good machine shop and ask them. They should be able to do it either way. Thats if they are a good machine shop LOL.

Hey, Wes

December 8 2004, 11:57 PM

Any chance that you could take a couple of photo`s of the oil passages that supply oil to the rockers before you cover them up with the sleeves? Also interested in roughly how thick that oil gallery is, it sorta looks like a cast iron tube in the 1 shot. Curious as to roughly how thick it is, as it is frequently blamed for the "oil in the rad" syndrome.Thanks.
