Balancing Act on "The Poor Mans 427"

Hi everyone! Here we are again, doing what we love to do LOL. I hope you get a kick out of this. I'm going to keep this plain and simple LOL. Bear with me and I'll show you the hap's......

Here is the balance card that we have. We needed to figure the oil weight. We came up with 7.5 Grams. To give us a total of 2030 Grams for our Bobweight!

Here are the weights that we will be using to do our balance act!

From Left to right (Big-Small) the weight of them are as fallow's 19.5g, 4.5g, 1g, & .25g

Here is the fixture that we will use including all the weights
that go with it!

Make sure that you have an equal amount of weight on both sides

Make sure that you include all the parts that go with the Bob to get your weight right.

Go ahead and assemble the Bobweights.

Here is our Softface Balancer.

Here we have the crank chucked up in the machine to get it ready for balancing!

Bill is putting on the Bobweight's that I have made up for "The Poor Mans 427".

Make sure that you have all the letters the right way. All of these Bobweights are a match set. You need to line up the Letters. Also you have to have an equal amount of distance from one end to the other (Meaning you have to have equal distance on both sides of the clamp). If you don't then it will throw off the balance!!!! Then your engine will have a vibration that you don't want!

Next we are lining up the Bobweights to the crank and each other.

Make sure that the Bobweights Have a 90 degree angle form one another.

Here is where we are to drill a hole in the crank. Like you might guess, this crank will look like Swiss cheese LOL. Our bobweight is sooooo much less then the factory! We started drilling after we spun the crank of course LOL.

After a few hours. this is what it looks like. It looks like the ugly duckling LOL!

Here we are spining the crank. If the unbalance part of the scale is 3 or less then you are good to go. But we wanteded better then that. So we are under 1.

To be that well balanced, its about a gram off. This is a Gram of weight. That is not much.

Next we will show you what we have done to the block to get it prepped for assembly!

If you have any Q's you can call me at 541-882-5177 or Cell 541-331-1484. Or shoot me an email at kwadams@charter.net

Wes I always sort of wondered how the weight of the oil was figured out

The Go to the Old Book and the same as a Chevy never struck me as very cool. How did you guys calculate the weight of the oil not to mention synthesize the weight of the oil in the correct place?
Just figured now that perhaps a few silicone dowels slipped into oil passages could synthesize the weight of the oil were it lies.

Well~

We came out with a nice round # LOL. Its all just what a person thinks. We put a cup on the scale and I weighed it out. I came up with 7.5 Grams. We took the cup and swirled it around. Then we talk about it and that's what we came up with! Some people would say 4, 6, 8, or even 12! Its nether here or there. "JMO"

flexplate/flywheel?

October 24 2005, 11:40 AM

Great installment again on the Poor Mans 427! That looks like a lot of work..

Question: I noticed you didn't have a flexplate or flywheel on the crank, is that because 390/427 ones are neutral balance?

Keep up the good work!

No Flywheel~

We will balance that all by its self! It is because its neutral balance. If we have a problem with the flywheel & Pressure plate in the car, then we can rebalance it and not have to balance the whole assembly. Isn't that cool or what LOL???
