FB Performance on Long Island has them but they'll cost you about $600. They're nice but for the money, they should be.

and them some

August 2 2006, 5:50 PM

I am thinking about putting one in my 69 Mach 1 390 car. The adapter will cost you around $600 +, then figure another $1800 + for and AOD that can live behind an FE (the torque will kill a stock one). Add in the crossmember and other parts, and you get the picture. I plan to have one in for next year, the gas milage sucks and at $3 + a gallon I'm spending upwards of $60 just to go to a car show each weekend.

There are other places

August 6 2006, 6:59 AM

But to get a good AOD to handle the FE you are looking at $1800, then $600-$700 for the adapter, and I think $150 for the crossmember (you could probably make one of those). Then there is the linkage and cable. I figured roughly $2500-$2800 to do my Mach 1.

BUT, I am spending upwards of $200-$300 + a month in gas just going to car shows and cruises, I spent $120 in one weekend in June. If you cut that $120 in half you get $60, in 4 weeks that's $240. Our show season here in Ohio is basically May-November (if we are lucky). $240 x 7 months = $1680. That pays for over half of the conversion in one year! At the cost of fuel right now, I'm figuring a 2-2 1/2 year pay-back on the conversion, if fuel goes up even more (likely) then the pay-back will be sooner.

Now granted, it's probably not going to cut my fuel bill in half (the final drive on an AOD is .67), but it should cut it a lot. I will also be able to put in some lower gears with the conversion, which means better performance from the car, and easy take-off's in town (which, if I keep my foot out of it means better gas milage in town). Even with 4.30 gears you are looking at a 2.88 final drive ratio. Of course tire diamater could effect that a little). Personally I'm going with either 3.91's, 4.11's, or 4.30's if I do the conversion.

If you want the URL's of the other companies that sell this stuff so you can talk with them, please respond here or e-mail me.

Pics of AOD behind 390 FE in my Galaxie

August 2 2006, 8:21 PM

More pics at: http://www.supermotors.net/vehicles/registry/10/31182

Scroll down a few entries and you'll see the costs associated with the FE Adapter and AOD trans as well as a link to where to buy the adapter:
http://www.supermotors.net/vehicles/registry/10/log/#log

I had it all installed, so I also paid for labor. Parts were $650 for the adapter, $1295 for the AOD & torque converter, and $245 for a rebuilt driveshaft.

Okay

tell me how does the AOD stack up for reliability, I was considering a Custom package from Lentech but the cost is huge.

what tranny did you use ?

$650+$1,295=$1,945 is real close to the cost of just bolting on a GearVendors OD unit

August 3 2006, 1:31 PM

and you have the original transmission, the original linkages, more gears, and a stronger transmission to boot.

.02 from a guy with a Gearvenders...

August 3 2006, 2:43 PM

first, as was said above you don't have to fabricate anything to run a GV unit it bolts right up. Second, a C-6 and a GV are both stronger than an AOD. Third, I've had 3 vehicles with AOD's and they suck, period. I've never had a "built" one however just stock stuff in Ford products. One was an 87, one a 2001 and one 2004. They did everything poorly but in fairness never broke completely. Most of the time I drive with the OD locked out.

Finaly regarding fuel economy, I doubt OD makes much difference in an FE since I still get around 10 mpg. I never ran the car without the OD so I have no base line but it don't seem like it could be much. I run 3X2 so I'm on the small primary most of the time. It is much nicer cruisin' with 3.7's however.

Re: .02 from a guy with a Gearvenders...

My AOD is built up. The specifics I do not know other than it being a "street rod package" that the guy runs in other vehicles with AODs adapted to big blocks. So far so good. 20 MPG on the highway in OD.

I am not familiar with a gear vendors unit but am perfectly happy with this. My only question with a GV unit would be is if you lose any more HP going through a transmission AND the GV unit?

Don't know what a GV costs in HP...

August 3 2006, 5:51 PM

I would assume it costs something being, like you said, another trans. I doubt I'd notice in my 5000 lb sled if it did. And in thinking about it, I should probably check my mileage since I switched out my converter. Seems better around town but I know better than to check it anywhere but the highway. It would no doubt make me sick around town. Last time I checked it took 3 gallons to warm it up and go 20 blocks to the tavern and back. LOL

it's not another trans so much as a two-speed axle, with part of the diff moved forward.

I was thinking it worked pretty much the same as the old Hone-o-Drive 2 speed axles

August 4 2006, 3:22 PM

Same effect.

A lot of good products and ideas have gone away...
