'69 'R' Code Hood Question (Torino)

I've seen the ram air hood for the '69 428CJ Torinos with a complete circular cut out under the scoop, & I've seen them with a 'cross' pattern cut out as well. Just wondering if it was a plant thing or date thing or something else? Thanks

I`ve noticed the same thing. I have owned 2 R code 69 Cobra fastbacks, both of mine had the single large hood opening. I have also seen several of the hoods with the 4 triangular "pie shape" punchouts under the hood padding on non ram air cars. I remember 1 particular green 69 Torino GT with a 302 2 barrel, we pulled off the tattered hood padding, and exposed the 4 pie cut outs. This was a car with the blanked off hood scoop opening, plus with the under hood padding, was obvoiusly not a functional hood scoop car.
I have also wondered a few other things about the Cobras; some have body colored scoops, others have black scoops ( I had one of each.), Also some have body colored tail light panels, others are black. I have also seen the snake emblem on the taillight panel in 2 different locations, either above or below the horozontal trim.

To further the mystery...

the one on my '69 R-code Torino is partially cut away. You can see the remains the "pie shape" cutouts where the hole was not cut quite large enough all the way around to eliminate them entirely.

Also, I believe all hood scoops were body color.

From what I understand, all of the openings started out as the 4 pie shaped opening. The one with the full opening should still have traces of where it was cut from the 4 pie opening. My Cobra with Ram air has the full opening with the traces of the 4 pie cutout. All the true ram air Fairlane/Torino hoods should be like that.

I don't know all the applications of the 4 pie cut out, but they were usually on non functional scoops and were blocked off.

Yes, the hood scoops came from the factory as body color. Many people changed them to black.

My 69 Cobra ram air is not fully cut out (just has the pie shape), but I bought a 69 GT, non ram air and was amazed when I pulled the insulation and found the full cut out.
This just goes to prove that Ford used what they had on hand.

I had a GT car, scoop, but not ram air

It was a late 68 car. I assumed that the PIE shape was for the non ram air. But the ram air door may hit the hood, hence the cut outs? Hawkrod may help on this... But both hoods should have cut outs for hood pins.

"Both hoods"...???

not sure what "both" you are speaking of, but Torinos did not have hood pins, just "Cobras".
