O/T, Clutch Problem

When I built up my new engine last winter I installed a new Hay's clutch & PP. It was their yellow unit. I've had nothing but problems keeping it adjusted ever since I installed it. It has never performed well...ever. I have to readjust it all the time it seems.

The problem I consistently have now is that when I rev the engine to about 3200 and come off the line, the clutch burns something terrible. Last evening I was practicing hole shots, trying to be consistant in coming off the line. As I started, I looked in the mirror and saw some smoke at the rear. I let off, got out to check the tire pattern, and saw there wasn't any. The smoke was from the clutch. It was really burning!

If I adjust it for minimal pedal free-play, this (slipping) always occurs. If I adjust it tighter, there's no free-play (and it still slips) and I'll burn up the TO bearing. I try to keep appox 1/4" betwen the three fingers and the bearing too.

Rear is a 3.70 posi with 275 x 60 x 15 rear tires, about 8.5" on the ground and 28" high.

Embarassingly, I must say that I had much more success with a chinese set I had in the previous engine. When I replaced it with this Hays unit, it (chinese) was worn very little.

There's only one place to adjust this, so there should be no problems. I can never get the Galaxie to hook up since I installed this setup. The current engine is a god bit more powerful that my last build. Could the Hays unit be incapable of handling the power?

I'm leaving the ffice now but will be in and out over the weekend.
This has continued to be very frustrating for several months now.
Thanks much.
