I used the U coat it from Menards

Easy to use and happy with results. Did not have to use acid to etch floor. A little slick if wet though.

I just priced having one done professionally

They want 3.50/sq ft. My new garage is over 1000 sq ft. Its going to sting if I don't do it myself. Let me know what you come up with!

I used the Rustoleum and it's pretty good

July 2 2009, 6:10 PM

of course I didn't follow the directions, but acid washed my old 30 year old floor first. Seems to be holding up well except where I drop heavy stuff or scrape it. Been 4 years now. I don't drive on it daily so that may or may not make a difference.

Me, too. No problems. Used it on two different garages...

and found you have to use the longest knapp roller for it to get enough material on. (not the 1/4 inch the directions say)

The oldest is 5 yrs. old now. Plenty of hot tires on it. No issues.
This is the stuff they sell at Home Depot and Lowes.

From what I've been able to gather...

July 2 2009, 6:33 PM

The affordable DIY systems work OK on virgin concrete, and then only if all you do is drive the car on it and park. Once you start really WORKING with the floor and drag jackstands and floor jacks across it, all bets are off.

My floor on non Virgin..

July 2 2009, 8:15 PM

concrete and it's had more floor jack, engine hoist and axle stand abuse than I care to mention. As I said, the floor had 30 years of dirt and paint on it before I got here and this picture is after 4 years with the Rustoleum.

It also makes sweeping, cleanup and sliding under the car
real easy.

OT Garage flloor coating

July 2 2009, 6:33 PM

I recently did my new shop with U-Coat-It. I am very pleased with the results. I used the blue base with flakes (clear top coat). Mine was 528 sq feet and cost around $500.
I like the appearance, clean up of spills and oil drips is very easy. You do have to watch out for dragging things across it, they do scratch. I did it my self it wasn't too bad. Would I do it again YES! Remember preparation is the key to a good finish and lasting results.

Good Luck

Rob

Something different

July 2 2009, 9:08 PM

I have had the roll on coating as well in the past and it started to lift and looked like crap in a year or so. This was probably due to prep and quality of materials. About 3 years ago I went with a heavy grade dark Grey indoor/outdoor carpeting from Home Depot. My CJ sits on it every day as I work on it. My wife drives in and out every day. We have 2 rubber mats for parking spaces on top of the carpet. This may not sound practical but it really is. I vacuum once a week and wash the mats and it still looks great. Have had a few spills/leaks from working on my CJ via trans fluid, foot traffic, and dirty parts. I simply use carpet cleaner in a spray can. It is comfy to lay on and my dogs love to lay on it and observe. I figure if it costs 350.00 every 5 years or so it is not too bad. Just a thought for you. The key is keeping it vacuumed well so things do not get ground into it. It seems very decadent to vacuum the garage floor lol.

Just a thought before you coat

If you are going to weld or torch cut in this area, be advised that any spatter will leave plenty of permanent little burn marks in the epoxy.
