O/T "MEL" intake photo of my X-mas in July present

Just got this the other week. Very odd manifold. Also got header starter flanges with it. I am dreaming up a way to make "intake runners" inside the open chamber so the damn thing would idle and drive. As it sits it probaly won't run right until 5,000 rpm ! I want to run it on the center 2 carbs ( if I can get them to flow 300 cfm each ), make intake runners, and just have the other 4 carbs for looks ?
Its going in my 58 Continental.
Just to make this FE friendly: I have 1 390 motor complete, 1 1969 S cdoe mach 1, 1 428 R code mach 1, and a edelbrock dual carb cross ram intake. Ta daa.[linked image] [linked image]

Carter BBDs?

July 5 2009, 8:46 AM

Not much info on them but from my notes they'd be about
1-1/8" venturis
1-7/16" throttle bores
210cfm at 1.5" Hg each or
290cfm at 3.0" Hg or so (2v rating)

So 6 of em would be about 1260cfm, about the same as the 427/425 setup. Not "too" much.
A couple of Stromberg 81 or 97 in the center would cut down the overall cfm and give 4 nice small venturis for crusing.

What do those intake ports measure?

By the way here is a link to the new MEL site if you don't have it, the old MEL site was great but got messed up:

Thanks Werby! Yes I am a member of the MEL forum. Old one was great , new one is nicer but very low internet traffic.
Intake port opening at the cylinder head is 2 3/4" X 1 5/16", it is one big open chamber, no runners. Probaly swirls around in there unless you are spinning her hard for complete draw.
Yes they are Carters. I'll swap them or just rebuild for the wow factor. Definetly going to plumb the inside of that plenum to make runners, maybe out of sheetmetal. then weld it back together and mill it all flat ( was thinking of cutting the intake to head mating surface to get in there, that way you'll never see it ).
More drunken fun to follow !

Port size...

...I believe the ports are about the same size as the FE Hi-Riser.

I'll lay it on my 390 later today, lifter valley cover ?

July 5 2009, 9:37 AM

Its already crossed my mind. Width is adjustable obviously, front to back spacing needs to be verified, also mounting. Maybe I'll make an adapter flange and valley cover for the FE ?
Think I'll just leave it for my Lincoln

Those old logs ran fairly well considering all the cfm.

I wouldn't try to cut it up, no runners no corners! One idea would be to use the 4 corner carbs like an old Man-a-fre setup and you could put a divider under the center carbs (while leaving them inoperable). Also remove the center hose and block off.
Good luck,
Ron.
