My 390 "Stalker" motor finally runs...

Put this together with some stuff I bought years ago for another project/plan. First time in over 30 years the car had only had 1 carb, so it's a bit lonely.

I plan on getting a few runs in next weekend at our Super Shifter race in Mission. Results, good or bad to follow..

Big file BTW so not good for dial up if anyone is still on that.

Re: My 390 "Stalker" motor finally runs...

Glad to hear it`s running again Dale, hope it runs well this weekend. But, are my eyes playing tricks on me,....or was that actually a piece of 2x4 (painted, of course) behind the RR slick, laying DIRECTLY on the garge floor, without a doily or clean cloth between it & the floor? You could maybe get a stray spec of dust on the floor!! Better grab the DustBuster!! Just kidding, the car (and garage) look great, as always.
I`m still waiting on a couple of gears from Jerico, for the Fairmont, so I`ll likely bring out the Mustang this weekend, although I gotta put the rearend back in next week, 5 of the pinion gear teeth "fell off" at Bremerton 2 weeks ago, imagine that! I`m off work all next week, so feel free to call. Wonder what TomP will be running this weekend; his camera, his imagination, or an actual running motor vehicle?

Sounding and looking good

Hope it runs as good as your last motor but lasts longer. It's no fun when it comes apart and hard on the wallet also. I know this to be true! happy.gif Good Luck and congrats on your quick turn-around! George

I can't make filthy garage jokes but i'll ask if you've heard of ass fixation ...or something like that... where you aren't supposed to be in garages with running cars unless you've left a "goodbye cruel world" note.

So will it be lettered D/S on the window now?

You build a nice car Dale, even with the "little" motor it sounds like a winner

Seemed suspiciously quiet on the forum the last few days

I guess we should've known you were up to something. That engine sounds nasty, I hope it proves some new theories, what ever those theories might be! (Rustoleum floor looks immaculate as always).

Yeah, how about a few details on the engine, it sounds great!

And the floor, I want to do mine that way. They finally got pavement in front of my house, so I can finally really clean it (fine red clay) and paint it. I am kind of a neat freak about my garage, and a treated floor would be great.

Thanks for all the comments.. My expectations aren't that

July 5 2009, 8:29 PM

high for this motor but the main thing is "It Does Sound Nasty" This is a 390 stocker project I started 4 years ago so it's basically stock. Heads are "cheater" C6 R's, intake is a not so great PI and carb is a 750 Vac. I bought these parts from a racer back then. Flat top pistons and the regular parts.

The block is a truck block, crank stock as are rods. Parts were donated by Forum member Fordman.

Machine work was done by a shop I don't know and I never checked anything. Bottem end went togther fine but is really tight for reasons I can't determine. The heads and intake have been milled extensively, so they have to be run together, otherwise I would have done something else.

The only thing not "stock" is a ratty old 70's solid Crane cam I used to run in my 427. It was the biggest FE cam they made at the time, so I had to have it for my street car. Advertised duration was something like 398 LOL!!

We'll see if it runs fast shortly. I already have an offer in for my roll bar and belts if it doesn't go better than 11.5...

Other answers...

July 5 2009, 8:40 PM

The Valve covers were on the original 390 when I bought this car in 1971. Never seen another set of those breathers anywhere since.

Rory.. my "doily's" are in the wash so I couldn't use them in the garage when I took that video.

Bill.. see post down away's about floor coverings. Nothing special about mine but it is getting a lot of abuse.

Scott.. Race plans for the year are next weekend at Mission for the Super Shifters. If all goes well (enough) I'll probably do the Super Shifter race in Bremerton in August. Assuming I haven't killed anything, I'll run the FE Shootout at Mega Ford Sept 12/13 since I need some of Doug's $2000.00 prize money. Our last Super Shifter race is first weekend in October, (I think) which is about the time Tom will have his car out.

Dale

The funny thing is that Dale has plenty of spare & extra parts, but you`ll never see tham in plain sight anywhere. Maybe he keeps them in the swimming pool, under the cover! I, on the other hand, always have to be careful that some of my "junk" doesn`t fall from the rafters, and bonk me on the head, or fall of a loaded shelf, and crush me!!!

I put stuff away and then...

July 7 2009, 12:52 AM

can't remember where, so it probably takes me longer to get anything done. I do hate clutter though and can't work in a mess.
