I just took it out of a 390 that was in my 57 custom. It had a missmash of parts so maybe its worth saving or not. It is a hydraulic and had a slight rumble when idiling. The numbers on the end of the cam are C8AX-C and under that are the numbers B-17.

The C-Cam!

November 7 2009, 11:15 AM

Wow a real c8ax-c.
Ran this cam decades ago, got it along with a complete 6v setup and T-bird air cleaner and lifters and rockers, the whole thing for an obscene price (six hamiltons).

The c8ax-c is the "Muscle Parts" "Controller" cam, grind identical to what became the 429cj cam of 1970/71.

I have not yet found one to measure (naturally I didn't bother to measure anything back in the 1970s) so I don't know the .050" exactly but I think it is about 216-228 duration at .050, compared to the 390gt/428cj at 206-220 duration. So it has more lope and a full .500" lift, and is NOT the same as the current Lunati "CJ Cheater" cam, which has more duration but the gt/cj lift to remain class legal.

If it is worn or otherwise unusable and you don't want it, would you let me know, I have begun to collect and "degree" some old discarded Ford factory cams and post my results here on the forum so we can all know the .050" etc events.

I'd be happy to measure it.

But it is a good cam if useable and you want to run it.
It wants some gear/converter, it was a dog with a stock converter and 3.00 gears, we needed 3.70s to make it come alive.

My copy of the Ford Muscle Parts book says this cam is hydraulic 282/296 dur and .500 lift (compared to the GT/CJ of 270/290 .481/.490 lift). Timing events indicated in the book are:

IVO 24 BTC
IVC 78 ABC
EVO 82 BBC
EVC 34 ATC
58 DEG OVERLAP

I might have to keep

November 8 2009, 7:10 PM

this cam and put it back in. I kept the lifters in order in case I was going to sell it but maybe I'll forgo the change to a solid cam for now and put this one back in with a new timing chain as the one I took out was very sloppy. Did Jays testing do any comparison of hyd cams versus solid cams? I can't recall. I just seem to recall that hyd roller cams are not anywhere near solid rollers for max hp output. Correct me if I am wrong on this. By the way this is a 4 speed car.
