Response to Some Questions for the September Class

'SR' below seems to have answered a lot of your questions so I'll just add to and address what they seemed to miss.

Crime - pretty low on the island. The highest crime is the stealing of bikes, or if you leave your door unlocked or your windows open - money would go missing from inside your house. That's about all we've experienced.

Population - the population of the country is about 250,000 and of the island is about 9,000. The island use to be connected to the Yucatan pennisula. The locals tell me that it's thought that the Mayan Indians dug a canal so that they could get through easier and that's how the island was 'formed'. So the native island people have more of a Mayan/Spainish decent. They are very nice and friendly. There are good and bad people just as anywhere but you can figure that out pretty quick. There are a lot of 'x-patriots' too on the island. % ? maybe 60% native, 30% x-pats, 10% other Latin American Countries - just a rough estimate

Class sizes - the upper classes are smaller, about 5-6 per class, then the 2nd sem is about 12, and 1st sem 32. Good teacher to student ratio!!

Space - 4 lecture halls, anatomy lab, computer lab, rooftop deli (great to relax and good food), faculty/Admin offices, restrooms on each floor. They are very good about having space available to study 24 hours. They have security from 5pm to 8am M - F and all day Sat and Sun so there is always someone around to help out and watch out for you - nice feeling - nice for a quick study break as well.

Social life, night life, tourists - SR did a good job on this -- I'd just add that the tourist season seems to be from Thanksgiving to Easter so keep this in mind when you do your tickets.

Recreation - SR did a good job on this as well - don't really have anything to add except you can always find a good place to go and eat out.

Profs - all the profs are great and are really there to help both in and out of class. There are definitely different personalities but once you figure them out, their all really good. The Administration and staff are also good, they are always will to help and are really interested in what's going on with each student. In other words, there is always someone you can go to talk to about a problem, situation, or just to talk.

Worth it? - YES!!!!!!!!!!!! It's hard to get depressed when it's always sunny. The island is actually quite big if you take the time to go around. I do know some students that all they do is go to school, go home, and go eat. I'd go nuts if I did that. So if you get depressed it's because you've not made an effort to go out and experience where you are at.

That all for now. Have to get to class.
