I am currently a studnet here in Belize and have been here for two semestsers. I am very happy with my decision. I can walk anywhere to get groceries. There are three nice sized grocery stores, I ride my bike most places but some of my classmates have golfcarts that they drive. The rent is about $300 - 500 for a nice one bedroom apartment. I can eat a local meal for $2.50 US. All of the local people are very nice and happy to have the students around. There are two dance clubs, and more bars than you can count and many resturants of all varieties and all price ranges. There is a great bakery, two meat shops, and several fruit/veggie stands. They also have a new 'Sausage Factory' that has great lunch meats (deli style), sausage, and smoked ham, smoked turkey, smoked chicken, Jerky, beef sticks, etc. There are several pizza places - that deliver within 45 minutes. There are now four banks - one just opened that is suppose to start accepting US credit cards in their ATM (otherwise it's only the card from that bank that is accepted). There are about 10,000 people on the island and about 250,000 in the whole country. They are a 'close family orientated society'. I could go on and on but I think you get the point.
We have a satelite dish for the internet at the school and the local phone company is suppose to be getting DSL service within the next few months though it'll very expensive @ $200 US per month. I'm working out a deal with some friends to share access which should be fine.
Oh, if you get bored on the island - Cancun is ONLY a short trip away - 6 hours by bus or you can fly and be there in an 1 hour. There is also a lot to do on the mainland (15 minute flight). That's all I have for now; need to get back to my studies.
If you have more questions, please post so that all can benefit from the answers.
