My friend and local artist Jonathan Weaver is having an exhibit of his art which is titled "Stay In The Circle Sue." In case some of you may not get the reference, it is from a scene in the film "Deep End" (yes the one that features Can's "Mother Sky")in which young Mike looses the diamond in Sue's engagement ring in the snow. In case you have not seen the film, Mike creates a circle in which they scoop the snow within and thaw it out in the bath house swimming pool which is unused. Of course this is the scene that leads to the rather gruesome end to this film.
A local newspaper did a story on Jon's show and gave a brief hint to where the title came from, explaining the interaction between the characters. He also said something about through hard work and preserverence one can hopefully achieve their goals (I think the paper lead him into that one). Well the editor sort of did a hack job on the article as he found out through a press release that quoted Jon as saying something like "Stay In The Circle Sue comes from a movie that proves through hard work and preserverence one can achieve their goals." For anyone who has actually seen "Deep End" that is not exactly the sort of quote that I would want to be associated with.
Moral of this story: Don't go swimming with Jonathan Weaver. If any of you are in the small town of Bridgewater, Virginia USA on September 8th, do come to his artists reception, even if it means coming from the UK, it will be worth it. |
