Space Debris
by
Hi,
We are the Band Space Debris, you can get infos and downloads about our Krautrock DLP here: www.spacedebrisprojekt.de
Fusetron writes about us: " Double LP worth of truly amazing KRAUTADELICSjam sessions recorded with various musicians between 1994 and 2001, in best of the early 70s AMON DUUL, CAN and other Krautrock heros tradition. Each side carries 3 tracks, so manylong tracksand psychedelic journeys present here! Long guitar journeys accompanied by effectand hammonds."
Hier einige Reviews:
1) der amerikanische Mailorder www.fusetronsound.com
beschreibt unsere 1. Platte so: " Double LP worth of truly amazing KRAUTADELICSjam sessions recorded with various musicians between 1994 and 2001, in best of the early 70s AMON DUUL, CAN and other Krautrock heros tradition. Each side carries 3 tracks, so manylong tracksand psychedelic journeys present here! Long guitar journeys accompanied by effectand hammonds."
Especially when you're a real lover of music or a musician yourself, you usually try to keep some kind of a "professional distance" when reviewing music. In the case of Space Debris' "Krautrock-Sessions 1994-2001" I was simply unable to do so. I had heard one of their tunes on a compilation CD before, and this was a tune I was listening twice before playing on that CD. When I heard the complete work under my headphones for the first time I had a feeling of happiness that I didn't have for more than thirty years when listening to music.
The more I listen to this music the more I think that it is some kind of a "missing link" between the original "genuine" Krautrock of the late Sixties and early Seventies and the repertoire of the international music of that time that the Sixties and Seventies German Rock bands wanted to become a part of. (...) Quite recently some German bands started to adopt the nimbus of "Kraut" again, and the results were, in some cases even charming, examples of musical inability. In this situation Space Debris appeared with their self released double-LP on extra-heavy vinyl, a superb natural sound quality achieved with the help of two, three and four track recordings, build up of traces of Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Santana, the Allman Brothers and many more, and still completely distinct and individual. They don't sound like any German Seventies band but nevertheless present undoubtedly Krautrock. It feels as if
Krautrock has finally come to itself, and this is what I called an enigmatic wonder (...)
Wer ausgearbeitete kompakte Songs bevorzugt: Finger weg; wer lange hippie-eske Instrumentaljams (nur 3x Gesang) liebt: This is for you.

The Pixies are to play the T in the Park festival in Scotland [where
Bowie is headlining], their first confirmed UK show for 13 years.
NME.com says the reformed group will play on the main stage on the
first day of the event.
T In The Park 2004 takes place at Balado, Kinross near Glasgow, over
the weekend of July 10-11.
The Pixies are expected to play some warm-up shows in North America
before they appear at the Coachella bash in California on May 1.
They will go on to visit Europe between May 28 and July 10, with a
host of other festival appearances planned.
The band are also thought to have a number of indoor shows pencilled
in, including two nights at London Brixton Academy, as well as a
support slot on Red Hot Chili Peppers' summer European tour.

Remember when I gave you signals that i was to send a zeb video? well i recorded the little bastard and what do you know? three years later its still at my birth home (2000 miles away, a bit far)
BUT the good news now...
a zeb dvd is in the works by sir ryan horlacher, drummer and naturebotter. so don't buy the bootlegs!

The world goes round, gets stranger and Krock still keeps us entertained - along with others. Isn't tech wonderful? There's a Zeb DVD in the works and still no DoS CD easly available due to inertia.... wasn't I going to post you one?

PS nice and quiet here innit?

Yes, the DoS is a few years overdue! I'd love to hear it. There's a naturebot review for freq that I'd still love to see, but i understand that time is a bit hard to come by. more music is in the works, but when i moved to arizona i had to leave my musical gear 2000 miles away, which was a bit of a blow to the creative front.
is that all? i can't tell, need a nap

My friend and local artist Jonathan Weaver is having an exhibit of his art which is titled "Stay In The Circle Sue." In case some of you may not get the reference, it is from a scene in the film "Deep End" (yes the one that features Can's "Mother Sky")in which young Mike looses the diamond in Sue's engagement ring in the snow. In case you have not seen the film, Mike creates a circle in which they scoop the snow within and thaw it out in the bath house swimming pool which is unused. Of course this is the scene that leads to the rather gruesome end to this film.
A local newspaper did a story on Jon's show and gave a brief hint to where the title came from, explaining the interaction between the characters. He also said something about through hard work and preserverence one can hopefully achieve their goals (I think the paper lead him into that one). Well the editor sort of did a hack job on the article as he found out through a press release that quoted Jon as saying something like "Stay In The Circle Sue comes from a movie that proves through hard work and preserverence one can achieve their goals." For anyone who has actually seen "Deep End" that is not exactly the sort of quote that I would want to be associated with.
Moral of this story: Don't go swimming with Jonathan Weaver. If any of you are in the small town of Bridgewater, Virginia USA on September 8th, do come to his artists reception, even if it means coming from the UK, it will be worth it.

midRange
An evening of mixed eclectic beats, electronics & abstract sound with music provided by coombe djs plus
Mothboy (Aphid / Rehab)...
has been pretty much a resident DJ at previous Coombe events, so now we welcome him back to midRange to play a range of mixed heavy beats and bass. Mothboy (Simon Smeardon) also records for his own musical project, Aphid and is also a full time member of Scorn's live line-up. He is also a regular DJ at the Law and Auder
Records events Rehabilitation.
Colin Bradley (Dual / Coombe)...
is the main founder of Dual and has appeared on various albums, 7" records and compilation CD's on Drone Records, Dirter, Fourth Dimension, Discus and CEE. Colin has been playing dj set's with recent appearances at SLOW SOUND, Salon of Exotic Reason, midRange, Rehabilitation plus others. He'll be playing a selection of clipped merged beats with washed out beautiful textured noise put through the Dual machines and re-sampled live as the tracks take on a new meaning.
Stormcrow (Bubonic / Rehab)...
also DJ's for the Law & Auder night (Rehab) and runs his own irregular P-Funk night called FNUK. He has various CD releases available on Adjust your Head Records and his own label Bubonic Records. In the world of Stormcrow you are likely to find Destinys Child jammin' with the B52's and the Cab's naggin' all in the same room while John Bonham bashes out a heavy backbeat. Stormcrow just don't give a Fugazi.
Clode (Coombe)...
have previously played at the midRange events and will be appearing on the Coombe Records compilation to be released soon. You'll probably hear eclectic space dub and fractured sounds.

An evening of improvised electronic sound loops, subtle feedback, guitar drones, laptops & tone generators
Live music performances by
Antenna Farm (Fat Cat / Phthalo)...
use a range of electronic and location sound sources, digital manipulation and guitars to create a flow of rhythms and feedback loops & drones. Antenna Farm have
releases on Phthalo Records, Hobby Industries and Fat Cat Records.
Dual (Coombe / Drone Records / CEE)
Dual's sound source is entirely from guitars, live and manipulated utilising laptop, live sampling and fx. The end result; morphing layered textures of treated guitar
sounds and atonal drones with static metronomic clicks and pops. To complement the music, a constant motion drift of warping imagery is projected as a backdrop.
iD (Ashley Davies / Project Dark)
iD is a project that primarily uses sound gleaned from a tone generator, which is crafted into vast swathes of swirling piercing sound and rhythmic pulses. Sometimes
blistering, sometimes fragile, the music is formed into a journey that drowns the senses. More is more, an excercise in maximalism. iD is Ashley Davies (Project
Dark, Headbutt, C4i, Chemical Plant, Ohms and Watts) and has recorded for many labels including Speeding Across My Hemisphere, Larmnerv, Evelyn Records, TM
Industries, as well as self releasing nearly 30 CDr's in the Sideshow Series.
Images & short films by
Brown Sierra (Noisegate Magazine)...
collectively run the 'sound art' magazine, 'Noisegate', and whom are also sound artists using self made instruments and electronics. Various releases are available on the National Express label. Their image work is shot on Super8 film, video and reflected slide projections, layering - abstract vs emblematic - moving or static, unique textures. Sometimes with a raw soundtrack or sometimes just silence. The short films showing are: Road Surface, Lamictogen, Pattern Perception and Resonance Imagery. Brown Sierra films have been shown at Atavistic Ratchets and Maxis 2002

Yea, it's been making the film festival rounds since Summer 2002. Chicago Underground Film Fest, Toronto International, Woodstock Film Fest, Raindance Fest in London, International Doc Fest Amsterdam, Gothenburg Sweden Film Fest, San Francisco Int'l Film Fest and most recently, Tribeca Film Fest in NY. These are all top film festivals so y'know the film's gotta be good. I've also read about the film in a bunch of magazines and newspapers including last week's NYTimes! There's stuff about the movie all over the web -- just do a google search on MC5 Film. Haven't heard anything about distribution yet but there must be massive DVD interest. MC5*ATT is showing in Melbourne in July.

"OLYMPIA - Suppose someone was handing out $20 bills and almost nobody
wanted one? That's roughly what's happening with a massive price-fixing
settlement involving states and compact disc companies. The deal calls
for payments of as much as $20 for customers who bought CDs between 1995
and 2000. But so far, only a few people have signed up, and officials
fear the money will go begging. In September, the five top U.S.
distributors of compact discs and three large music retailers agreed to
pay $143 million in cash and CDs to settle allegations they cheated
consumers by fixing prices. Part of the settlement - about $44 million
in cash - is earmarked to pay customers from $5 to $20. By the end of
December, only about 30,000 people nationwide had applied for a piece of
the pie, a tiny fraction of the number the settlement could handle. No
figure was available for just Washington state. "The response thus far
has been fairly abysmal," said Washington Attorney General Christine
Gregoire, who's tried going on morning radio shows to promote the
settlement. "I just want to make sure that Washington consumers get
what they're entitled to receive." Gregoire was among the attorneys
general of 41 states and commonwealths who accused record companies of
conspiring with music distributors to boost the prices of CDs. The
companies settled rather than endure a costly legal battle. Anyone who
bought a CD, cassette tape or vinyl record at a retail store between
1995 and 2000 is eligible. The window for applying doesn't close until
March 3.
The settlement's Web site (http://www.musiccdsettlement.com) has been up
for a month, and legal notices have been published in TV Guide, Parade
and other national magazines, but the response rate has been very low,
said Tina Kondo, a senior assistant attorney general in Gregoire's
office. "I guess people don't like to read legal notices," Kondo said."

Not really KR-related but I was sad to hear of the death of Mickey Finn, Marc Bolan's sidekick in the heyday of T.Rex. I was introduced to both of them at a recording of a 'Top Of The Pops' Christmas special at the BBC studios in Shepards Bush, probably late, erm, 1971 (oh so young!). Despite being overwhelmed by having shaken hands with the divine Marc I remember Mickey Finn's presence as being even more charismatic; tall, dark and good-looking with a very quiet and almost mystical aura. They both accepted my introduction with genuine good grace, with a complete absence of 'pop star' attitude, and were clearly enjoying the tremendous success they'd had that year.

Last night's BBC2 1/2 hour docu on the Aztec exhibition at The Royal Academy
(which was a damn good programme btw) featured various selections from the
Popul Vuh album whose German name I can never remember right - Stille Weiss
Ich Sie Bein, maybe (Iotar?) - the one with BIG choral bits, slow drums, and Renate
from Amon Düül II. Appropriate, but surprising...

Ian and me have caught each other conscious around 22.00-23.00 GMT. This time seems to work for US & UK. Any ideas for Oz, or naything else?
Posted on Jan 6, 2003, 10:33 AM from IP address 158.94.148.49
Yeah, I really think this would be a great idea. Even if its just me and you, Zali. School starts tomorrow and I will be free and have the internet accessible at 1300-1400 hours each day (by Pacific Standard Time, does that line up with the time you mentioned?). I'm hoping to catch some of you on the board then, as I don't think I'll be able to get on the net other than those hours (no internet at my house! its good, gives me more time for lizard lovin')
rendezvous at the holy KRMB chat club, ian

Why don't we set up an IRC channel somewhere? Every platform has an IRC client, and it's gotta be quicker than using a web interface on a dial-up connexion.

(though of course it'd take time to set up)

Web-based chat programs seem to be relatively quick - I'll just have to check at some point that the Network54 one will actually work on my laptop at home. Since Ian will be chatting from various machines on campus I'm not sure how convenient it would be to set up an IRC channel (How convenient would it be, Ian?) and besides we might as well try this out to see if anyone actually uses it first.
13.00-14.00 Pacific Standard Time converts to something like 21.00-22.00 GMT. Probably the best thing would be if we leave notes on KRMB saying that we're going to be at the chatroom at such & such a time.
Shall we try this out from about 21.00 GMT this evening?
Posted on Jan 7, 2003, 10:18 AM from IP address 158.94.148.96
I missed this evening as a) I only just read this post and b) I was a tad busy trying to get the winbox to recognise some swapped RAM chips, then got into recording Kosmische's radio show from the webcast from 22:00.
Anyone going to be using this chat thingy Wednesday evening (8th)?

As it happens I tried it out on my antique laptop in the early evening and then forgot all about it cos I'd just got to a good bit in my book. I might try it out tonight - if I do I'll leave a not here on KRMB.

yes, there are certanly more pop-ups here these days. i guess the only way to get rid of them would be to start paying for the board - which really doesn't seem worthwhile.

...and sorry for being incredibly inactive on the KRMB front - unreasonable overload of work getting in the way of the Net stuff. Anyway, have a good un'.

..but some nice gloves with a velcro strap on them.
Happyhappy merry jolly bah! to yoo all for 2003.
It seems I'm doing the Komsiche FM radio show on NYE (sorry, it's a crap TLA but as three-letter-acronyms are an interest of mine I just thought I'd share the horror around) too. Not at midnight, but up to 11.30pm, so it'll doubtless be a pre-record of some sort. 10-11.30, 31st Dec, 104.4fm in London or streamed on http://www.resonancefm.com
Anyone got any requests?

"It is with great regret and deep sadness that I must announce the death
of Mary. We will all miss her dearly."
Martin Pike, for Stereolab
"Mary Hansen, singer and guitarist for the experimental pop group
Stereolab, died on Monday
after being struck by a car while riding her bicycle in London. Martin
Pike, co-owner of
Stereolab's Duophonic Super 45's imprint with Tim Gane and Laetitia
Sadier, was extremely
saddened by the loss when we spoke with him via telephone this morning.
"It's incredibly tragic," said Pike. "We're all going to miss her.
It's just a bit too soon. Even though it happened on Monday, all of us
only [recently] found out. We're all still very numbed by it all." The
band's official statement reads: "The suddenness of her death has
shocked the band. Mary was a special person. Our thoughts are with her
family and friends who will miss her greatly."
Hansen, originally from near Brisbane, Australia, joined Stereolab in
1992 after the release of "Peng!". She also contributed vocals to bands such as Moonshake and The
Wolfhounds, and made appearances on releases by Mouse on Mars, Brokeback, and the High
Llamas, whose Sean O'Hagan has been responsible for brass and string arrangements on
many a Stereolab LP. Mary Hansen was 36."

I'll be doing an hour of darker experimental music from 5pm to 6pm Pacific Standard Time today (Halloween). I'm not sure what I'll play yet, but I'm thinking about some Magma, Univers Zero, Archaïa, Sand, Popol Vuh, Pierre Henry, and I'm not sure what else. Anyway, you can listen at 88.9fm in Orange County, or via low or high quality MP3 streams from:
has anyone yet found a source for the 30th anniversary edition of the above which is out or coming out on the Table of the Elements label and i saw advertised in Wire?

Re: Tony Conrad & Faust - Outside the Dream Syndicate
by AndersMoe
That's funny; I saw a box set of that this saturday, and I was so certain it was only in a dream. I sometimes have uncomfortably realistic dreams; for instance, it was only in a dream that I saw The Pop Group "Y" on cassette with six bonus tracks and on CD with ten bonus tracks.
Whereas the box set was real and exists in real life.

S'funny, I dreamed of a London Underground extension that would take me to this other place where the shops were shutting and the sun was going down but I was just too lazy to wait.

So, the news on this is that it is a 2 cd set which comes with the original album tracks, the extra track on the not-so-recent reissue, and 2 tracks never before released from the 3-day recording session that created the album; "The Pyre of Angus was in Kathmandu" and "The Death of the Composer Was in 1962".

Keef from the Faust list has done a redux version of Faust (yes, of Faust) + lots of the rare material and interviews from Andy Wilson's radio special on Resonance FM, as 4 CDs with a load of extras bunged in. This'll be a collector's item, no doubt... and it's called Abzu. http://www.faust-pages.com/howtoorder.html

I always wanted one of those crazy machines that could see round peoples living rooms to check if anyone was hiding or anything!
By the way, how is life at the forefront of the krautrock messaging system?
I'm alright, been busy but good. I went to see a piece of "soundless music" this week in liverpool, only it wasnt soundless at all - it sounded like BBC 2 documnentary music, but it had some low frequency stuff underneath that you couldn't hear but was sposed to affect your body. It was boring and didn't affect my body.
anyway, I'll speak more soon - I gotta short email from Devo this week!!!
Posted on Sep 28, 2002, 11:50 AM from IP address 213.121.68.211
is pretty dull which is why I spend most of my time hanging around the fringes of the old slipstream/spec fic/sci fan scene. Plus you get take taken out for dinner by authors once in a while - the rest of the time they're having crises!
Do tell about the Devo letter.
Posted on Sep 28, 2002, 10:56 PM from IP address 213.122.114.199
I sent a little email to Devo declaring my total DEVOtion and stuff, and the next day I got a message from Gerald Casale, saying...
"Joe, thanks for the Pro-Devo Sentiments. Gerald."
Only short, but it's FROM DEVO!!!
A MESSAGE FROM NEU!!!!
Also I sent a message to Michael Rother again declaring DEVOtion and stuff, and he wrote back a very nice reply. What a nice little guitarist.
Oh yeah, I reckon Kling Klang will probably play in London sometime in November. I will let you all know when we know.
The new Kling Klang concept single "The Superposition" will be out in November also (hopefully), more info when it get hotter.
Hope everyone is ok, and remember KRAUT SNOT DEAD!
(Some people I know in Edinburgh, were gonna get a Oi!-Kraut band together called NOI! doing like dinger-beat stuff but yelling NOI! over it - I'll let you know if it materialises)

Ok, so guess what? This is a post about... Faust! Yep, they've got a new album called "Patchwork" coming on Staubgold (http://www.staubgold.com) soon, and there's a track on the label sampler "Music Out Of Place", which just dropped through my letterbox. The track is "Nervous", and I think they played it at the last(ever?) London show - it's a very Garagey (not in a big bassy, gold-chains sorta way though) number, which if it's the same tune, is sung by young Lars. And of course, Suicide have a new album out soon too. But I haven't heard it yet. T-M

Ah, it all makes some kind of sense now... or not. What's the German for "Koff Koff"? I seem to have come down with a lurgi. T-M (PS, completely and utterly off-topic, there's a computer game of John Carpenter's version of "The Thing" just released - today, already.

Just got the new flaming lips cd, well worth a listen, some lovely electronic bits and bobs in there and some seriously speaker mangling synths! Nice!
Also heard some new (gulp) prog rock, ie modern, some of which was passable (fineus something or other) and some of which was good (von daniken) however a band called "parallel or 90 degrees" were absolutely fucking fantasic, v van der graff influenced but with hawkwindesque/krockesque/devotoesque/stranglersesque stuff going on as well, well worth hunting down!
KRMB in disscussion of new music shocker???????
I can see the headlines now.....

listened to the track on the website. sounds good. i notice they have a free downloadable album on there too. have to get that onto my hard drive when i got a free hour or so...
"albums" 2 and 3 on the iuma site aren't Zeb, they compromise what makes up The Naturebot cd WHICH IS DONE! The internet versions of the songs aren't all up to date and it doesn't feature all the songs, so email me if you want a copy of The Naturebot cd itself, and include yr bloody address! Then find out what its all about. Arse!

Since this message board isn't exclusively krautrock perhaps we should rename it to correct that bias. I suggest: We Are Not Kraut - aka WANK - or maybe even RADIO WANK.
What do you think?
Posted on Sep 10, 2002, 1:32 PM from IP address 158.94.148.41
Wow, eeen! I had a dream with you in it last night. We were in this big house somewhere Scandanavian and it was really boring so we went outside to play Led Zeppelin numbers on my 12 string and the old Hofner semi-acoustic. We strayed from the garden into the high street and we couldn't plug in the amplifiers until the bank opened so we went to a pub instead. They served us a half of lager a glass of Coke with a pint of iced water and a light salad. The lettuce in the salad was made out of the hard middle parts of leaves - and then you said something about the salad but I CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS!
I'll ask Bridget - I told her what it was when I woke up - she might remember.
Posted on Sep 10, 2002, 4:31 PM from IP address 158.94.148.59
First of all Zali, let me say I love the dream.
MY MOTHER also had a dream with me in it last night, wherein I was perched outside her bedroom window on the roof. It was 9 in the morning, and I start work at eight. She said "Ian, you're late for work" and I said "no I'm not". She said "you should go to work" and I yelled back "I WILL" and that's the basic jist of the dream.
Posted on Sep 11, 2002, 3:31 AM from IP address 12.229.174.20
Well, you get back into yr own dreams and stop hanging around in other peoples.
I'm a bit peeved that we didn't get around to playing those Led Zep numbers in the high street. I can't remember which song we were jamming before we decided to go outside and ROCK! Maybe if I knew which song it was the whole thing would make sense.
Now, wake up and go to work!

I feel it is worrying to have you two discussing dreaming of each
other and wanking. Cast my voite as a no. I did dream the other
night that Frankie wore a baby Neu! t-shirt to her birthday party but
it was green so that is obviously not a premonition.

fantastic local Pasadena band called honeywater or somesuch that did a
lovely job covering Morricone. Sounded like Clint Eastwood on 'ludes.

Well, I jealous that you can whistle Morricone cos I can't whistle AT ALL! I really envy people who can whistle - I'm sure that people who whistle must be incapable of something else that makes them feel inadequate and stuff. I mean, where whould the justice be otherwise? Tell me that!
Just bought a fridge. I'm going to switch it on in about an hour when it has settled down and we can have jars of roasted peppers and cheese and beer in there. Aren't white goods brilliant?
