Use seawater to irrigate crops

I like where this is headed. In fact, seawater should be pumped in and used throughout the entire United States, right down to small towns, for uses in toilets, utility uses, sinks, etc. I understand some industrial uses need distilled water, so why not also build massive, huge, high volume desalt plants, one per square mile, on both coasts, sans Alaska and Hawaii?
