HEY!! It's Reagan. And I'm having a party.

by

Hey everyone, long time no see. So much has been going on with my life it's crazy. I'm working for a defense tech. contractor doing sketch concepts for them, and finally getting my own comic published in the Flight Comics anthology which'll be hitting shelves in June. You all better pick it up, or I will torture your groin.

Anyways, reason I'm showing up here all of a sudden is that I wanted to make an announcement that my fiancee and I will be throwing a phat little house party of sorts down at our place in San Marcos, which is in northern San Diego county on June 4th. It'll mostly be a barbeque/drink/hangout/gamingfest and stuff, but most importantly, a good chance for me to see old chums again.

SO!!! If you want to come on down, let me know. Either reply here or throw me an email at reagandammit@hotmail.com so I can give you the proper address and time for the event, as well as my contact info. I really hope to see some of you again.

This place is a ghost town, but once was so active. Well, I don't have much to say. I'm about to head back to Sarasota to begin my senior year at Ringling. I'll be working on my thesis. How many of you out there are planning to go to art school or are already attending art school. I'm just curious to know what sorts of projects you are all working on.

If there are any CSSSA-ites from 2000 or 2001 lingering here, I'd LOVE to hear from you. Email me or . . . post! I miss you all! . . . weeps

i switched to engineering in 2001

by

I guess I should explain why/how I switched from animation to mechanical engineering.
As a kid I loved to draw and could not get enough cartoon watching. When high school came, I was privileged enough to go to school of the arts high school (in the 415-fo sho.. san francisco, if you didn't get that...) Anyway, after CSSSA I went to SF community college and took gen ed, flash and 3D studio max. I didn't mind the programs-but I hated sitting at the computer for so long. I loved to draw-not sit in front of the computer. Then I remembered what one of the CSSSA teachers said when we went on a field trip to Pixar- "Most animators will become inbetweeners"-that sucks! I also missed my math and science classes and decided that I could be both creative, advance in technology and jump into a demanding field by becoming a mechanical engineer. At first I thought I would like engineering design-then again .. there is auto cad D: so then I decided to focus in thermal/fluids (still mechanical field). Now I have an internship and (sit in front of a computer) write energy efficiency reports for facilities.
I am still in school (i am president of the society of women engineers SWE at SFSU) and I am finally graduating in spring 07...
now to answer your question:
My senior project is to design and build a HPV (human powered vehicle) for the ASME (american society of mechanical engineers) competition. I am also designing a snow gun for my mechanical design class.

Remember what I said those three years ago on the last day of CSSSA?

Remember on that "graduation" day of CSSSA 2002, when I said that I enjoyed the experience so much that I would try to come back as many times as I could?

I'm an animation student for CSSSA 2005! And as soon as I can apply for CalArts, I'm doin' that shit like it was fine fine woman! or fine fine manwoman damn!

(if you're wondering, I went 2002, 2003, snuck in a few days for 2004, and am going for 2005, all for animation.)

I used to think they drew the limit at two acceptances. I went two times myself, in 2000 and 2001, before your mad CSSSA streak begin. I tell you I feel very fortunate to have gotten in the second time, especially since they don't take too many people from out of state. CSSSA is just so great you have to go more than once! I'm glad you are enjoying it so much and congrats on being accepted again . . . amazing!

How the fuck did I find this place?

by

I don't know. But hey everyone! Good to see this alive and kicking. Alright. Let's be opinionated! I go first. It strikes me that Western Animation is going down the shitter. Forgive my shitty language. Mainstream animation is anyway. So how many animated films where in the box office this year? Someone please tell me it was more than 4. And again Pixar is dominating the charts. And it's not like Eastern Animation is far off either. Since I've been working at TokyoPop (LOOONG since retired due to the fact that that company is a leech. Fat, and sucking) I've noticed that Anime is lacking the finess, style and story telling that it had earlier in it's "American Golden Age" (and waaaay before). By all means, respond to this and tell me "Alex, you're fucking wrong. You big douche". I don't have all the facts, and I'm not admitting to knowing it all (or even half of it). Also, what's with all these corporate Badniks having all the power? Are we sheep to be herded by the media and rich bastards with money? You know, we only have ourselves to blame. We let ourselves be sold like cheap two-bit hookers. Or one bit for that matter. We have to realize the potential is all in OUR hands. We have the power to draw, write, and self produce. Why don't we do that? Why don't we say, "Hey fat cats, we're tired of getting shitty cuts for doing all the work. Phuck off." Seriously guys, let's get our shit together and start a fucking revolution. "Oh no, there goes Alex on his Artistic Power rant" Shut up. I can and will. I'm out of this blasted cuntry (pun intended) as soon as I can pack some bags, a hefty portfolio and some living cash. Europe, India, or hell even... oh I don't know, CANADA. I'm fed up. I'm tired. I haven't slept because I'm whoring myself out to this stupid project I care nothing about (but it's paying some cash), and I need to make art. Holy shit. Did I just call Animation art? Oh damn. Someone call Eisner. He needs to make a buck off of this. What do you think Disney was doing before the dreaded shitfuck post Lion King era? It was art people. How many of you can discern the difference between the impressionists, the surrealists, and the post-modernists? We need to start thinking about animation in a new light. If I see five more Ward Kimball head stutters this semester, I'm going to... I'm going to... I don't know what I'll do. Anyway. How have you all been? I miss you all terribly.

Hey ALEX!

by Scott

Whoa . . . it's been FOREVER since I've talked to you. I'm glad to know you're still alive and pursuing animation still(and I know it's frustrating). I'm in my third year at Ringling now. I still don't feel like I'm making art. It is hard to try to learn everything and make art at the same time.

Pixar is definitely the hottest thing going, but that's because no one is putting in close to the amount of effort these people put in. Most animated films ARE crap nowadays, but the future does rest in our hands. If only everyone cared as much . . .

Well, I don't have time to write too much. Tomorrow I have second pass animation due for my lip sync project I'm working on. Hope to see you here more!

Hey Scott! Glad you're still having at it. I'm definitely hoping to work out my own films in the future. I just can't see myself in a studio space, but how knows. Pixar is definitely hot. Great stories, great animation, etc. We'll see where I end up. Hopefully at StudioCanal making films with them. One can dream! Speaking of StudioCanal, has anybody seen, or knows where I can get a copy of Corto Maltese? Trying to find that thing with English subs is like looking for Midas' golden gloves, locked in the box of pandora sitting in a coffer in the lost city of Atlantis. Snong.

I'm back on the board . . . finally

by Scott

For all of you who haven't heard from me for awhile, I'll let you know what I've been up to. I just recently finished the first semester of my junior year at Ringling. I've been pretty much absorbed by the 3d world and most of my time consists of animating now. And next year, believe it or not, I'll already be making my senior thesis. I start the preproduction work coming up next semester. I have several story ideas already in the works and eventually it will be narrowed down to one. Then I design my characters and storyboard everything. Senior year I'll be creating a two minute animation.

If you want to have an idea of what I've been working on, here are a few links to some of my projects.

The animation is wonderful

by Robert

The animation is wonderful. It is very funny. the main character's nose is a little too long. It doesn't look right. Other than that, your character is wonderful. What program did you animate him in? How long did it take to animate one of these movies?

These were all animated using Maya 6.0. I agree 100% about the nose. I absolutely hate it, HATE it! Why I ever modelled it like that is beyond me. Each of these projects took about two or three weeks to animate, except for the last one, which I had to punch out in just a week!

Did anybody see the Incredibles? It's Incredible.

by Robert

Did anybody see the Incredibles? It's Incredible. I love it, it's a wonderful movie. I especially enjoyed the voice of Sarah Vowell who played Violet in the movie. She does NRP's This American Life. Her voice is so cool.

Listen to her on this link her:
http://www.barclayagency.com/vowell_links.html

The Animation is wonderful and the story has many cool twists to the superhero formula. Like do Superhero's get bald, get married, have to balance saving the world with raising a family, and other themes are frivalous law suits that prevent them from saving people when others don't want to be saved.

Yeah but it doesnt hold a candle to shark tale. Sure originality might be appealing to some people, but lets face it, anything new is scary and confusing. Thats why i love shark tale. Songs ive heard before, plot lines ive see time and time again. Plus the character design is superb. I love shark tale almost as much as i love Polar Express. Take it from an animator: motion capture is a lot less work. Why do people animate by hand anymore? Thats why i dont animate. We have actors and sensors for that. I love that "floaty" feel all of the characters have. Its relaxing.

I just love the way the characters were animated on the Incredibles especially Helen Parr. The way she made funny faces to Jack-Jack is realistic even though it's not. It's almost like she was a puppet/doll for a moment. It was really cool.

The great motion capture debate

by Scott

I can definitely see the advantage of motion caputure. It is a much quicker alternative to actually animating everything, but I don't feel it is absolute in its capability. I view motion capture as a jumping off point. Ideally it should be altered by animators in order to make the characters move in a more interesting way. I love the Polar express, but the fact that the animators were not allowed to exaggerate or change the facial expressions bothered me. Much of the time it felt like I was looking at emotionless doll faces. The entire purpose of using animation as a medium is to have the freedom to exaggerate the action, even if only slightly. The animation of Gollum was extremely successful because the animators were allowed to perfect the animation and the facial expressions created through motion capture.

whats been going on in my animation world

by

So I got a job as a TA in an animation class for sixth graders over the summer, and last week we had our last class, which was a field trip to Warner Bros Animation. Not extremely exciting, but two awesome things happened.
1) I got to shake the hand of the man who created Yogi Bear, Scooby Doo, The Flinstones, The Jetsons, and half a million other cartoons. Yes, Joe Barbaera was there. The only words of advice he gave me personally was that I need a haircut.

2) We got to see a clip from the upcoming show The Batman, and it's gonna be pretty cool. It tries a bit to hard to be "hip" and new, but for the most part I think it's gonna be fun.

Also on another note: there was some incredibly awesome concept art and storyboard art for the Kangaroo Jack animated movie/show. It's gonna suck, but the art is incredible.

Just felt like sharing that with fellow animators! Talk later,
-David K

Hey, David, man, I would like to apologize

by

I remember at CSSSA 2002, one night you came into the room to find me reading or drawing or something, and you said,"Jeez, do you ever go OUT?!!" And you were right in assuming that I, in fact, did not ever go out.

Now, if my life had continued as it was 2 months ago, it would've never crossed my mind that I was doing you major psychological damage-- obviously, you needed time alone, you needed personal space. Well, now I have a roommate who never leaves his post on the bed. Every time I go into the room, there he is. Or sometimes he'll have a girlfriend in there, which is even better... hell, who can argue with not only never having alone time, but also having to share the air in a 10 x 10 cell with 2 other people? Not me. Hell no.

So, David, I finally see exactly where you were coming from, and I wanted to take this opportunity to sincerely apologize. This weekend he's having 2 friends over. Yeah, to sleep. I'll definitely get my punishment, that's for sure.

Anyway, it's nice hearing from you-- that's pretty kick-ass that you got to meet Joe Barbara. Kick-ass as hell. How's college working for you? Is it treating you like a son? Or... is it treating you like... a daughter?

Anyway, I gotta go rock that homework. Stay death-defying.

I made a blog...

by Bevin

I'm trying to use this summer as my time to catch up with other people in my class in terms of drawing skills and experience, so I've been practicing art/animation related stuff for approx. 12 hours each day this summer. It's really hard, boring stuff that I'm working on, like drawing geometric shapes in perspective without a ruler, and doing 1 min. gesture drawings, and animating boring stuff to try to get the mechanics right. Sometimes it gets really hard to stay on task because there's so much not-so-fun stuff to be done, so I've started a blog to track my progress.

Here's a link: http://bevinsblog.blogspot.com/

Pretty soon I'm going to start posting some of my work on there, and even though it's just gonna be a bunch of boring crap, I'd really appreciate it if some of you would give me some comments and critique on it. I've made it where anyone can comment without having to sign up for anything or use a password.

Thanks,
Bevin

ACCORDIAN GIG!!

by

CALENDER

O.k., here's the deal. I'm going to be playing with (or rather, I'm going to be playing as part of a show, so I'll be playing solo) the Evangenitals on the 5th of July twoothousand4 at El Cid in Silverlake.

You can also check out <lj user="juliachrista">'s lj, who happens to be in the band of the EVANGENITALS. and I have heard half the Evangenitals.. I'm happy to say they rock.

P.S., although it's only about 15-20 minutes, it'd be cool if some of you could make it. Don't try if it's too troublesome, I don't want to give you evil time.

I'm back home and back online! Yay!

by Bevin

I've been cleaning out my room since I got back from California. I just cleared out a space for my computer so I haven't hooked it up until recently. Grrr...I hate room cleaning. How did I end up with sooo much crap?

Anyway... I've been waiting to tell you guys that I finally got to go to Pixar! That place has to be just about the most awesome place in the world! It was even better than I imagined.
You know all that stuff they show on the DVD features and you're like "yeah, right, like they really do that kind of stuff at their office" but it's actually true. In the animation area they have their own little stage and their own bar and they have music performances on Friday nights. Everything is decorated all crazy and it really is kinda like a shantytown with all kinds of stuff thrown in there. It's not anything like the places I visited on the CSSSA "animation studio" field-trips with the tiny identical cubicles for each person. It's not like an office building at all. It's like nothing I've ever seen before.

Alan was so nice to take me through and show me all the stuff like the big screening room, and the small screening room where they do dailies, and all the art gallery sort of stuff upstairs. He also showed me all the stages of one of the shots that they go through when they animate it (like layout and blocking and animation and then the final shot). That was really cool. I got to eat lunch at the cafeteria there, and we sat at the table next to Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich and Bob Peterson. That was so awesome. It's funny that I see so many famous people in Nashville and I totally don't care, and then I see famous people at Pixar and I totally flip out.

I know that some of the people on this board have been to Pixar, but I thought I should share my experience, especially for those who haven't been. If you've never been to Pixar, you should definately try to get in somehow. It's so worth it. I'll probably never get to go back there again...*sigh*...I guess I better get back to work so I can perhaps be ready to apply for their internship at some point.

Hope everyone's having a nice summer!

Bevin

by

Yo, is anyone here who's applicable planning on going back to CSSSA? I'm just curious, cuz nobody's said anything about applying again or going back or what have you. So, yeah, just wondering.

Anyway, I'm going back, so if any of youse are planning on coming on visiting day, definitely don't change your plans or I'll burn your house down. Now, which would you rather have: no house, or a warm reception from an old friend? I can give you either or both. The choice is yours.

Anyway, I love you all with every part of my body (this includes both testicles and yes, even my esophagus) but I have mercenary work tomorrow morning which requires my being awake at 4 AM. So I gotta go.

Bye bye!

I am going to be in the animation program, what program are you in? I was just wondering what you think of CSSSA, and if you had any advice on what to bring. I look forward to seeing you this summer!

I may have answers to your questions

by

I will also be in the animation program... I did attend, in 2002. Let's see... what else did you ask? What to bring? Funny you should ask me... y'see, back when I originally attended, I wasn't much of an artist at all..

I've improved marginally since then (although I'm still pretty shitty on the visual side... don't expect nothin' pretty from me), so let's see... if I were me now, but back then, what would I have brought?

Well, first of all, definitely get a masonite board that fits the proportions listed... i think it was 24" x 30"? Yeah, cuz if you get like some big monstrosity, you're gonna have some trouble, especially coming from Cleveland. Believe me... I come from Texas, also a far-away place. The airport ended up delivering mine cuz it got lost in baggage. Also, don't use the masonite board as a lunch tray. Well, actually, I guess maybe you could if it were the right size. I'm gonna have to try that this year.

Ok, so now I guess I should give you some useful information. They ask for a gallery piece. Bring something you've done in the past that you like. That shouldn't be too hard, right? Uh, don't try to come up with something brilliant the night before if you don't have anything, though. That's kinda what happened to me, and, being the non-artist I was, I began to learn how much I hate markers on that day. I mean, no offense if you like markers, but yeah, markers suck.

You might wanna get an extra eraser to bring along, but there's a convenience store down the way, so that's not a necessity. Bring your music, I guess, cuz my room always liked to share music. I would assume that's a universal thing.

Hm, I guess if you have something you can't live without, like something important to you, that's good to bring. I used to like my harmonica and my cape and my tape recorder. Actually, I still do, so I'm gonna bring those again. Yeah, so if you have something like that, it would be good to take. They ask for something like that for the program, too, if I remember correctly.

Also, you might need to bring drugs and alcohol, cuz it could be hard for a 17-year-old like yourself to get them otherwise.

Hahaha! I'm kidding! Drugs are horrible. Don't bring them. If you do, I won't like you. Also, alcohol. Both of them suck.

So, have a great day. I look forward to seeing you, Josh.

Sincerely,
Lieutenant Josh

some other tips!!

by

hello both Joshs, whatsup?

SuperJosh may remember me, David, as his humorous and wiley room-mate. Other Josh doesnt know me, but I might see you when I stop by for a visit. I've been to CSSSA twice, so lemme give you some tips on what to bring:

1) they send you info on what to bring for drawing, and the measurements of the drawing board are really really big for absolutely no reason. Just buy a standard figure drawing-size board. Good enough.

2) my first year when I roomed with SuperJosh, he forgot a pillow. I laughed at him, but many a time since then on various trips I have forgotten a pillow and my neck has payed for it dearly.

3) Also, bring a trash can, and empty it regularly. it's amazing how much crap we throw away each day, and for a while we werent sure what was making the room smell so bad. Then we threw our trash out and it smelled nicer. We learned it the hard way.

4) The beds are not very confortable, especially if you're the last to claim a bed and you get the really uncomfortable one (like our friend SuperJosh.) This isnt a necesity, but a sleeping pad could be nice.

5) Bathing suit. It all depends, really. The first summer I was there, I didnt use the pool at all. My second summer there, my room faced the pool and we saw cute dancers in bakinis all day long from our window, so we went to the pool regularly. Swimming is fun, relaxing, and a good way to meet people, so grab some friends and go some time while you're there.

6) Costumes. No questions, just do it. You'll be the coolest kid ever.

Above all, be there in the moment when you're at CSSSA. Truly some of the best memories and most fun times have been had there, and you gotta fully enjoy each minute. Have a blast, I'm only slightly jelous.

Greetings Josh 1 and 2!

by Elliot

I'll let you guys decide who is the REAL Josh and who is the imposter over the summer...

For the benefit of Cleveland Josh- My name is Elliot and I am a CSSSA animation two timer myself (my second year was Super Josh's first). Oddly enough, I too will be returning this summer as an animation TA. I'm sort of going to be an unofficial CSSSA TA. Like a teacher's assistant's assistant or something. My job doesn't actually start until the second half of the program so I'll be seeing you guys at the end of week two on through the end of the program. Another former CSSSA animator, Kim, will be joining me as a TA as well. I wish you guys the best and will hopefully see you soon!

Well...

by Elliot

Okay, I guess I don't count since I'm a second generation CSSSA'n, but I can vouch for the existence of at least some of your buddies. I saw Lissa and Jo Jo a few weeks ago at the open show. Both of those guys are creating fantastic animations and seem to be relatively happy. Lissa's animation involved some sort of DDR kitty busting moves left and right and Jo Jo's was about this depressed little girl who finds happiness through a flying pony. I haven't seen Gennady (not that we really know each other anyway) but word on the street is that he's holed up in some cavernous lair at CalArts creating amazing artwork. I saw an animation that he worked on at the open show (some sort of collaboration where he did some 3d modeling). It involved this air battle sequence that was truly amazing. So yeah... that's about all I know about the 2000 folks. Maybe some of 'em will get off their bums and post here once and a while!

opinions of colleges

as some of ya'll may or may not know, i am a junior this year and am starting to think about college! (gasp!) and as my fellow art peoples, i'd like to hear your opinions or about your experiences in the college world. I know some of you have proceeded on to art schools, and i know that some of ya'll have gone to universities/colleges. I was jus sorta wondering about the differences between taking art related courses in either school, and how things are working out for you where you're going and that sort of thing. it would be realli helpful because i'm starting to look at specific colleges now and getting freaked out with the whole admittion ... ok i can't figure out how to spell that.. but the whole admittion thing makes me hyper ventalate. hahaha anyways jus drop a line or email me if you have anything you'd like to share about your college experience! thanks

deep breath

by Elliot

I made the college app process suck for myself (mainly because I'm an indecisive stress prone freak). That being said, there's no need to get all bent out of shape about it. Looking back on things, I definitely applied to too many schools (including ones that I wasn't all that interested in). Sure it's good to apply around, but don't go nuts. Another thing to keep in mind is that where you go really doesn't matter as much as what you make of it. I know that probably sounds really stupid, but the reality is that regardless of where you go you're going to have a whole bunch of new experiences, meet new people, and learn a whole lot so you can't really lose. This year was hardly perfect for me, but I don't really have any regrets. There are a whole bunch of things I would have really missed out on had I not gone to the school I did.

As for the whole art school vs. university thing. I can only give you my perspective coming from somebody enrolled in an art department within a university, but I'll also try to pass on some info I've gleaned from Alex about his CalArts experiences. Both routes have their advantages and disadvantages and neither one is going to give you everything you want. Basically, I'd start off asking yourself whether or not you are fully comitted to going into an art related career. If not, I'd definitely recommend going to a university since you'll be exposed to more people of varying interests, and you'll just generally have more opportunities at your disposal. Also, a number of universities have really nice art departments if you want to keep the creative juices flowing.

However, if you know you want to go into an art related career (particularly an ultra competitive one like animation) then your decision may get a bit more tricky. The reality is that art schools provide much more rigorous, professionally oriented training programs that are designed to get you an art job. Additionally, your fellow students at an art school (generally) have better drawing skills etc. and will push you to improve faster than you might otherwise. This can be great for some, but it can also be really stressful and limiting in terms of the broadness of your experiences (I've heard that a lot of the general education classes are a joke at CalArts).

Taking this into consideration, I decided to go the university route. So far its been going pretty well, but I have to be extremely self motivated to keep my art skills on par with my art school friends. This means looking beyond the work of the people in my classes, and not being complacent with getting an "A" in the class. Ultimately, my grade doesn't matter if my portfolio isn't good. Animation is really important to me, so I've made the effort to take extra drawing classes in my spare time, to make personal animations and live action films with other students on campus, and to seek out the top notch faculty members who can teach me the skills that I really need to learn. This has been a really tough process (although rewarding as well), and I can't really say at this point whether my efforts will actually pay off.

Yeah... So after all that rambling I probably haven't clarified anything for you at all. If you can glean anything from this, just realize that no school is even close to perfect. You'll have awesome days and shitty days no matter where you go. Every school has something to offer, though it will take some effort on your part to compensate for the things that it is lacking. Just try not to stress about it or anything. In the end things will work out for the best

Now for the sales pitch

by Elliot

Of course I want you to go to your dream school (wherever that may be), but if it was up to me I'd have you join me at USC. Some perks.... lots of food variety, top notch sports (if you're interested in playing or watching), the best damn college improv comedy troupe that I have ever seen (and they perform for free), great weather year round, a gorgeous campus, access awesome events in LA, and some spiffy students and faculty members too.

Here's my experience

by Scott

As you may have seen from some of my earlier posts, I'm attending Ringling School of Art and Design. I was attracted to the school because of its computer animation department, which is considered by many to be #1 in the country. I also liked the friendly small campus atmosphere of the school.

What I believe is the primary factor in deciding what school to go to is what you most want to go into career wise. If you want to do computer animation your obvious choice would be Ringling (as it was for me). If you want to do traditional animation, Cal Arts would be the top choice (being to top traditional animation school.) If you are seeking a career more as an independent film maker/ animator who would show work in a film festival, RISD would be a likely choice. If you want to be a painter I would highly recommend Kansas City Art Institute.

I completely relate with what you are going through. I remember the confusion I felt when applying to schools. There were so many routes to take. I agree with Elliot that you shouldn't go nuts with applying to too many schools, but you should definately keep your options open and apply to a fair number of schools so you have the freedom to change your mind. So have plenty of backup schools, because you never know, one of the schools you consider to be only a back up may later on become your first choice. This is exactly what happened in my case.

At first I had my heart set on going to RISD, partly because many peeople call it the best art school in the country. But I visited the school and I didn't feel really comfortable with it and I noticed that the animation department was using outdated equipment. Training on this old equipment would in no way help me get a job. Then I also visited Ringling which I had only applied to on a limb, considering it only a backup, and I fell in love with the school.

You also have to visit the schools if you can. It is expensive travelling to these schools but well worth the investment. If I didn't visit the schools I probably would have chosen to go to RISD and later I would have been disappointed. A school catalogue can only do so much to present the school to you. First hand examination of a school is invaluable. It gives you the chance to preview the school and ask lots and lots of question.

Also regarding art schools vs. universities I agree they both have their advantages/disadvantages. I chose an art school over a university because I like the idea of being at a small school. It gives you a chance to really know people and to develope a tight-knit community. Also, the level of talent at these art schools is pretty amazing and you learn so much from the other students work. It is competetive, yes. But the desire to keep up with everyone else keeps me on my toes. I do agree that if you are not sure art is what you want to go into take the safe route and go to a university. Either way you can't go wrong.

Reflecting on my experience at Ringling thus far, it has been very challenging and straining. I've had strict deadlines to meet and sometimes I have had so much work that I had to prioritize the things that most had to be done and not worry about doing the rest. There were also very few breaks. In the past school year I've been working on projects seven days a week most weeks from the time I wake up till the time I go to sleep(which sometimes would not be until very late at night.) I am also realizing now that I have to detatch myself with grades. I've caused myself a lot needless stress worrying about getting good grades. Straight A's are almost an impossibility at art school. So the key is to just be content with having a few B's and knowing that you did your best. I'm not trying to scare you, I just wanted to let you know what it is really like. But if you are ready for challenges and are driven to succeed you'll be fine. It will be a tough four years, but if you do your best you'll be ready for the real world.

I know I've just been rambling on, but I hope I've been of some help!

Some input..

by

Currently I'm applying to the Alberta College of Art and Design. It's basically the Art Center of Canada, only better (from what I hear). It's a concept artist's wet dream, but not much in the ways of animation. I'm gearing up mainly for entertainment industry illustration, hopefully.

Anyway, colleges to avoid:
The Art Institutes - Should go without saying. I hear nothing but bad news about them.
Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) - This place is like Mordor. I know people going there who say it's the hugest scam since Scientology. I asked about this school to a few different people at a Portfolio Day event, since SCAD wasn't there and I was curious. The replies I got were along the lines of "We.. don't talk about -them-."

ugh . . . I don't like SCAD either

by Scott

SCAD is like Ringling's rival school, if you can call it a rival, because it doesn't really seem to be doing all that well. The Computer Animation Department there is iffy. They don't teach as much concept development as they do at Ringling and we all know we need to have GOOD STORIES for good animation! The school also has a weird schedule. I believe there are only five or six months of school per year at SCAD. What's up with that? They want to compete with other art schools but they are in session for two months less than most of the other art schools.

Re: Some input..

by Zoe, the tall

I want to clarify a bit about Reagan's comment of the Art Institutes.

Please do consider:
San Francisco Art Institute
Chicago Art Institute
and Kansas City Art Institute (<-- I will be a freshman there next year. Yay yay art school!)

They are their own separate entities with entirely respectable programs. Unfortunately they are also the sad victims of the infamous chainstore Art Institutes. The Art Institute of San Francisco is a vastly different school from San Francisco Art Institute.

If there's an 'AI' before the name of the city, run screaming.
If there's an 'AI' AFTER the name of the city, embrace it with much love.

That is all!

I'm starting a new website!

by Bevin

I've decided to start a website specifically for animation students to talk about the stuff affects them the most. I thought it would be really cool to have an online community of a whole bunch of animation students from different schools, so I'm trying to start one. It may not work out, but I thought I'd let you guys know about it and see what you think.

Okay, I can't delete a post, so please ignore the above link

by Bevin

I put a section on that site that would allow students to share notes from visiting artist lectures and apparently the Ringling faculty found out about it and has a big problem with that, so I'm taking the whole site down for awhile and possibly never putting it back up.

Sorry about that. <

Maybe once I get out of school I'll start a community to help students. I think that would be a fun thing to do, especially since so many of my friends are younger and would still be students once I get out. And once I'm out in the industry, I can help students with info I learned from experience, so that no one can say I'm sharing information that belongs to them. Sorry, I'm just a little upset right now. I'm gonna go away before I get into any more trouble.

Question for California peoples!

by Bevin

I have some questions for people all over Cali:
If I was to come to LA on the week of May 8th or so, and then drive to the San Francisco bay area, would any of you peeps be in either of those places? I dunno when anybody gets out of school, but I really want to see some of you, so I'm trying to schedule my summer California trip when I might have a chance of seeing my CSSSA friends.

Also, does anybody know of a good place to stay in the bay area. Some place that's not really expensive, but not really gross and scary either?

Is there any time in the summer that would be better for me to come in terms of both getting to see you guys, and also in terms of weather (I heard it was rainy and cold in the bay area in May. Is that true?) My parents are going to a meeting in LA the week of May 8th, but I don't necessarily have to go that week if it's not the best time.

Hmmm

by Elliot

Bevin,

I think classes end for me May 11. I should be in town, but I don't know if I'll be working or not. Regardless, I'm sure I could visit for a bit. Alex may be around too, though I'm not sure. I think CalArts may end a bit later...

Do you remember that CD I said I'd try to make?

by

Hehehee... Do any of you remember when I said I'd try to make a CD? Well, I couldn't before, due to the fact that I had no way of recording anything.. but NOW I CAN. and I DID. That's right. I made a CD of UTTER SHIT!! o.k., so it's actually not all that bad, if I do say so myself.
So you may wonder "how can I get me one of those?" or "who are you?", I say contact me at zoeisfunky@sbcglobal.net and we'll talk.
Most likely, I may have to actually charge something like... $2.00 for the CD's if more than three people want them. CD's and cases do not come cheap for me.
Thank god for Cosco, though.

so yeah.

oh, and just in case you doubted it, Havana Gila is on there, don't worry.

love you all,
Zoë.

CAN'T YOU SEE MY GLEAMING SMILE?

Hi!

by Scott

I pronounced it as SUB-LEVEL. I don't recall "jennifer boyd is a good kisser" but there is so much stuff on the walls it's possible I've overlooked it.

So what department were you in while at CSSSA? What are you up to now? Are you still in the arts? I can't help but be interested when I see someone new finding this message board. It is basically abandoned now, but alas new people here and there keep finding it!

Hey feel free to post again!

hmmmm

by Elliot

I'm a sub-level guy. Sure I slur the words together, but I don't put any stress on the LEV part. More like SUBlevel. In any case... If you went to CSSSA in '95, do you know Corrie Francis? Just curious...

Has anyone seen The Passion of the Christ?

by Robert

Has anyone seen The Passion of the Christ? Whoa, this movie has created immense controversy a year ago and it still is. Partly because Mel Gibson made the movie with his own money and whether it is Anti-Semitic or not. Why would a movie about Christianity create immense controversy? Then a movie about Islam or Buddhism doesn't. Sounds like a double standard.

The Passion of the Christ has already in the fir
