-
Took stage 3 care at Blackdyke Farm near Carlisle on Wednesday. Got the results today - I'VE PASSED!!
It took 3 goes to get there but it's paid off in the end.

I'm going to start putting in much more work now towards the riding exam and let my instructor tell me when to take the exam again - in the not too distant future I hope.

On another note - now that I have retired from my office job I am looking to teach more - what sort of charges do all you PTT instructors out there make?
At the riding school where I work on Saturday mornings I get £6 an hour which I thought was good. I want to expand now and try getting more work at other schools but wasn't sure what to accept as payment - anyone got any advice?

Must go now and tell someone else my news.

Bye.

Well done Evelyn! Really pleased for you...on the subject of charging it all depends. If you are freelance then you could charge what you want and remember it makes no difference that you are a PTC and not an AI - its the quality of your lessons that count. So don't be scared to charge what you are due!

If I teach freelance I charge £15.00 per hour and most riding centres are willing to pay me £8-12 per hour (depend on the place).

There's also an agency (cant remember the name) that has just opened for freelance grooms and instructors. It might be worth getting in touch with them...they say they can get you good money but not sure how much they take!???

Good luck with the riding and well done again.

Take Care
Will

well done - and good luck for your next exam!!

Charging - If you are trying to get your hours then £6 is probably fair if a little on the low side, but if you have them and are a full AI, then I would ask for £10!

Go on - you're worth it!

Thanks very much for your replies.

When you teach at a riding school - do you assume that their insurance covers you?

I have had a quote for about £400+ for freelance insurance and wondered whether I need it if I just work at riding schools. I'm happy to take out the insurance once I get some contacts and can cover the cost by enough teaching hours, but I thought to start off, I may not need it.

When you work at a riding school, do you pay tax and NI or just get cash in hand? - not sure what to do about that either - in fact I don't seem to have much idea about working for myself! Should I set up a limited company and have all my earnings going through that?

Let me know what you think or what you have done personally, please.

By the way - I have got my 500 hours but won't be an AI until I get stage 3 riding, hopefully later this year.

On the subject of insurance - if you go on the BHS register of instructors (which you are entitled to having passed your PTT), it costs £125, and covers you for freelance teaching.
