Hi all ,
haven't been about much lately ( computers not feeling too well ! lol ) but hopefully there will be a bit more activity on the board now that the exam seasons back in swing. ( if the foot and mouth problem ever clears ).
As I am shortly to retake , and hopefully pass , my PTT - I was wondering what others at this level charge for their services ? :
I thought something like :-
£15 ph for a private lesson , £10 group
but what do you charge for stable management , lunging a horse ( without the rider ) , a lunge lesson ( with rider ) , schooling a horse , or hacking a horse out ( i.e. just for exercise ) ????
Your views would be very much appreciated.

Thanks ,
Jonathan.

Lesson Charges

Prices sound good. A friend of mine who is an AI charges £15 private, £10 group (max 6), stable management £10 per hour (groups), lunge lessons £15 (either with a rider on the horse or teaching them to lunge), lunging for horses £7.50, hacking £7.50 per hour. She doesn't charge extra for travel unless it is more than 20 miles away.

I also know of someone in my area who is Stage 2 but no PTT who charges pretty similar rates.

I currently have private lessons off a Instuctor and obviouslt Stage 4. She charges £30 per 45 mins be it for riding or stable management. Her husband who is qualified the same but has rode internationally charges £60 per 45 mins. They charge extra for travel to your premises.

Hope this helps!

Hate to live in your area! I just couldnt afford it!

I have three instructors at present:
BHSII - Half hr lunge £10, 2hrs horse care lectures and practical group £5, 2hrs horse care lectures and practical private £10
and
BHSII and BHSI (who work together, so charge the same)
1hr group lesson £12
45mins semi-private £12
30mins private £12

I am very greatful to them now for providing really enjoyable, useful lessons for such a cheap price!

Forgot to mention that the first BHSII also does 1hr private lesson for £15

Guess there must be quite a bit of competition in my area!

Hi all,

I am taking my PTT this Friday but already teach at a local riding schoold where i get £10 an hour regardless of whether it is stable management, group or private, or two half hour lead reins....

However, if I teach at my livery yard I charge £5 for half an hour lesson or a lunge lesson (20 mins) and £10 for an hour lesson. These prices will go up once qualified but as I am there, keep my horse there and have no travelling to do (and know the horses and riders) it's easy and also encourages more clients to practice on!!!!

The BHS II at the same yard charges £30 for 45 mins.

I also charge £10 to school a horse for 40 mins and £15 for an hour, or £10 to hack it (think insurance!!)

Hi there Claire, I'd be interested to know what area
you are in.
You did say that you get paid £10 per hour and are
as yet, good luck for friday by the way - hoping the
foot and mouth crisis doesn't put the mockers on your
exam, as yet unqualified.

I'd be interested to know from other teachers in riding
schools as to their hourly rate and the area they are
in.

Purely out of curiosity, I'm either in a bad area or
getting fleeced.

Thanks for your responses, in anticipation
Amy

Hi everyone. I passed my PTT exam on Friday - thanks to you all for your good luck wishes!!! I also did the Equine Specific 1st aid today and now have my card to prove it!!

I am in the Reading area where eveything is expensive Amy. However, I do know of instructors at riding schools who are paid around £7-8 per hour but I've put my rates at £10 as if you calculate your time getting there, petrol etc you really can't do it for much less if you turnm up for say 2-3 hours in an evening.

I have spoken to another local school who were very keen for me to start once I qualified but once I said £10 an hour they went quiet!!! I am going to stick to my guns in the hope that something else will come up or they will find it difficult getting seomone else for less!? Basically, my school charge £9 for half an hour and I will have up to 7 kids so thats £63 for the school and a fiver for me - not highly paid when you look at it that wasy is it?? Their hour lessons are about £22 but highly reputable BHS places locally charge up to £45 for a private hour and the list goes on....

Hi all,

The written paper was fine, fill in an accident report form. Loads of room and half an hour ro do it in. Basically you got a sheet telling you what happened and you have to put that onto the form so I just put EVERYTHING from one to the other !!!!

The class lesson was the one i was dreading " assess the ride over a single fence looking at balance, rhythm and then progress to a course of fneces inc. spreads and verticals. Tricky to fit it all into 35 mins and had one horse who reared and bucked but I asked the Chief Examiner if he was happy to keep it in and he was so we carried on (they thought this was impressive!?) All but one rider did the whole course and although all of them could have been more forward going and put half strides in etc I explained that had it been an hour lesson I would have spent more time on the flat changing paces, teansitions etc to get the horses more forward and listening - this also seemed to go down well.

Theory and lecture went well and the lead rein was ok, although she said i perhaps should have been asking more quiz type questions to teach the kiddy for eg the two types of trot (even though I did teach her how to rise!!!)
