has anyone worked out what they've paid for riding lessons, theory and stable management sessions etc and compared it with what they are likely to earn working in the equine industry !!

I'm about to take stage I and want to go on to PTT and start teaching but I work part time (not on a yard) and have to pay for all my lessons. Looking at things from a financial point of view it just occurred to me that if and when I get a teaching post will I earn a reasonable amount to cover my investment ?

From the job satisfaction side I know it's the right thing to do.

This is my first time on the site and think it's really useful, thanks Jonathan.

Welcome ,
I would'nt even consider working out how much I've spent on instruction , and other horsey things in the past decade or so that I've ridden! If you add show fees , hunting , treats , you soon realise why you are bankrupt!
Add exam costs , clothing , extra training for the exams , and petrol / food for the day of the exam : and I've probably still missed a few things out!
STill - It is one of those things where job satisfaction really counts - who needs money anyway!

Bye 4 now ,
Jonathan.

Hi Lin,

Don't even think about it! I work full time (non-horsey) and am going down the same route as you - I've done my stage 1 & 2, and am now thinking about the PTT. I would not even start to count how much I spend on lessons etc, but as I consider this a hobby (even if it turns in to a job in the future) then I think it's worthwhile.

I've also found that once you start to know a few people they are often prepared to give advice for free, or let you have 'practice rides' on their horses, or let you teach them for practice.

Plus - this site is great for both tips/ideas and for moral support!!!!

Good luck with your plans - and your bank manager!!!

Juliet
