I've just put together the statement announcing Mark's release and his legend profile and 3 photos that sum Mark up onto the STAR website as a sort of tribute.

Mark 'Alfred' Maddox

Well I never knew that, that's dented the hardman image a bit!

Seriously a legend and a constant in what has been a real rollercoaster ride for this club over the past 7-8 years, a testimonial is well deserved and as others have said hopefully a position can be found for him at the club in the future-his passion and committment to the club should be harnessed in some way.

Thanks for the memories Maddog.

good decision though

June 7 2006, 4:05 PM

sorry to be a heartless sod but this is a good decision.
we're not short of players who can "kiss the badge".
he's not quite good enough now, and i hope there's 4 or 5 more who are trimmed off the list to make way for a slightly smaller number of better players.
we all know the ones who are not quite up to the mark.
The realistic assessement of last season is that Colin Little's goals were the only reason why we stayed up.
Peter Band was tremendous and generally Stuart Coburn was also outstanding but Colin's goal tally was the most remarkable single stat in non league football last season.
when you look at his age, and at the lack of goals from other attacking players, its pretty obvious where one of the priorities is over the next 2 months.
I hope we dont have rose-tinted specs on ALL of our players from last season.
ps i dont agree with testimonials -if we're rasing money it should be for the club to help them stay in the conference over the next few years.

Kicking a dog when it's down

June 8 2006, 9:16 AM

Lets get in fewer better players for the money then shall we?

We'll be hard pushed to find anyone with Mad-Dog's commitment but I'm sure the 'cote will succeed.

I don't disagree we want as quality a squad as possible but I think Bob is underestimating the power and value of team spirit which is what got us into the conference in the first place and what kept us here.

Mad-Dog never kissed his badge...(the only player I can remember who did that was Mick Hayde)..because he didn't need to...his commitment and dedication was obvious was obvious.

How many better centre halves have we seen play against Alty who clearly couldn't be ar$ed? or left their club for a better deal?

Mad-Dog played for Alty for a pittance of what he was worth...he picked other players up to get them to training.

he's one of the few who does deserve a testimonial.

You'll be saying we shouldn't pay the players anything next as all money should go to the club.
