How this league has changed......

From the BBC website:

"Terras' chief warns over backing
Weymouth chairman Martyn Harrison has warned he may pull the plug on his financial backing for the club unless crowds improve.
Weymouth pulled in 1,766 for Saturday's win over Cambridge, 1,800 less than the previous home game against Aldershot.

Hotelier Harrison told the Dorset Echo: "A crowd of 1,700 when we're top of the table is disgraceful.

"If the town can't be bothered I don't see why I should, and they'll have to find somebody else to pay the wages." "

Only 1700! How do they cope? Perhaps living within your means might be the answer? What do these charimen expect to happen when they pump ridiculous money into non-league clubs? Do they expect to become Barcelona overnight and fill their ground for every game? These money men truly are a pox on the game.

This country!

Rosie,

It's all down to inflated egos.
Ask our very own Gerry Berman!

If I was a Weymouth supporter, I would be seriously concerned about the long term implications of relying on this one man's funds and the aftermath of his (inevitable?) departure when he finally becomes bored.

How many other 'Crawleys' are waiting to happen in this league?

I suppose that having experienced the Maunders era at Moss Lane, we are only too aware of how perilous it is to rely on one major benefactor.

Muff

August 22 2006, 8:26 PM

I don't know if this is 100%, but Ian Ridley is having his book on running Muff part serialised in the NLP. Last week he revealed that their spending was/is based on 'Options' payments made by the proposed developers of their ground (i.e. they pay the club an up front % of an agreed price for the land based on the developers getting planning permission). Ridley reckoned the cash wasn't coming from the Chairman last year, so maybe it is this - hence the outburst.

Prob not be long until MC at Vics does the "Does this town want a club" rant if their attendance drops below 1,000 again.

Its just so boringly obvious when these rants happen. as you rightly say Rosie do they expect a fan base to turn up overnight ?

As far as i'm concerned is all their own faults for
a)expecting instant supoorters and b) for not checking out their investment properly before ploughing money into it.

Have to agree with the living within our means as the best idea. Crawley will not be the last to find troubles, I fully expect at least another Conference club to be struggling comewhat May.

We may be Part time but we have a longer future than most and are realistic.
