Yes, that is correct.
Before there was 'league' football it was just called football. Once there was 'league' football, other football became known as 'Non-league' football.

Because Altrincham invented NL football we had to play against ourselves every week until other teams were invented. Consequently we were also the first champions of NL.

This inturn is where the song "Can we play you every week" came from.

This was sung by different sides of the ground to each other as Altrincham had yet another 1-0 walkover.
