I thought I was doing the "right" thing pouring MARVEL MYSTERY OIL into the intake of my 2.3Ltr MUSTANG TURBO as I rev'd it up smoking the hell out of everything and finally stalling it. Then I yanked the motor dropped in the new bullet and stuffed the old MMO "stored" motor in the garage. It was less then three to four months later, I yanked the stored away 2.3 ltr's head and found brown dried out looking, light rusty patches on the bores. I alway's thought from then on, that MMO has got to be a high detergent blend to "free up" and clean stuff which is what it is supposed to do ...hard to think it could also do a great job protecting from rust with things lke Bo-Shield and LPS which are directly aimed at metal protection.. I have a feeling MMO is kind of aggressive on reacting with moisture as are most detergents, it pentrates/seeps - does not hold film depth as do greases and rust protectants. I learned the hard way, that in Florida the land of hummidity that cast iron really needs a pasting with Engine Store lubes or better yet a thick coating of grease. Syn oils like Mobil 1 (unlike Dino Oils) will do a hell of job protecting bare iron/steel from rusting (I use M-1 on tools etc) BUT M-1 will really screw up a new motor on break in for that protective coating you put on to save the bores from rust will also SAVE (LOL) the rings from Breaking-In!
About the easiest to install most secure thing for rust I've found is Motorcycle Chain Lube. It sprays on, penetrates and then sets up in a think greasy coating...........Now getting it off -- LOL
