While we're about it...

September 4 2002, 3:31 PM

...Diamond Head have reformed, too!

Zodiac would be ace, but he ought to headline (playing the High Priest/Beat Messiah set-list). Worth staying sober for. Well, sober-ish...

improbable wishlist

September 4 2002, 10:37 AM

calexico, 'cause i'm really pissed off that i missed them in 2000.
elliot smith, for the same.
fluke in the dance tent. wagamama.
melt banana
enon! everyone go see this band if you have a chance.
radiohead, but they blatantly hate mean fiddler seeing as how they've alway gone for glasto instead.
aereogramme, because biffy clyro appear to have shot up recently and a/gramme still have come past my neck of the woods.
90 day men.
blonde redhead.
explosions in the sky
oxes.
les savy fav! and perhaps they could move pretty girls make graves up the bill next year so i don't miss them trying to get into the arena.

just realised these are all carling stage bands. bar radiohead perhaps.

pearl jam! i know someone in the business and he says they're definitely playing next year.
tori amos. how cool would that be. pj harvey could come back, and bjork.
babes in toyland, seeing as how they're kicking about recently.
all the mainstage-able bands i'd like have split up.
melvins. mmmm.

come on vince, it's a long enough list isn't it? now watch as the line-up forms while spectacularly avoiding each and every single one of the bands on this list. pfah.

Radiohead

September 4 2002, 3:33 PM

They did play Reading once, I think - early/mid 90s. Not long after Creep came out, tea-time slot if memory serves me well. And it probably doesn't. Been a lot of lager flowed through in the intervening years.

Yeah, they played Reading 94 - late Saturday afternoon on the main stage after Pulp I think, followed by Manic Street Preachers, Ice Cube and Primal Scream. Imagine that being possible today?

94

September 4 2002, 3:58 PM

perhaps the one year i'm most narked about never having gone to - anyone know the full line-up? a friend of mine keeps on reeling off names from the main stage and it makes me want to cry when i look at the line-ups they churn out now. hmph.
think it was something like cop shoot cop, stabbing westward, helmet, jesus lizard etc. etc. so that's half a stage of now-defunct bands i wish i'd seen.
the sooner the strokes implode the better.

Sunday 94

September 4 2002, 4:11 PM

Red Hot Chili Peppers
Soundgarden -cancelled
Therapy
Rollins Band
Senser
Afghan Whigs
THE WILDHEARTS
Helmet
The Jesus Lizard
Stabbing Westward
Reverend Horton Heat
Cop Shoot Cop

I think that was it for the main stage on Sunday - £55 for the whole weekend too!

Friday had Cypress Hill, Lemonheads, Frank Black, Pavement, Hole, Gang Starr, The Verve, Flaming Lips. Cann't think of any more. Saturday also included Terrorvision, Senseless Things, Kitchens Of Distinction, Fun Da Mental.

Can't remember the Melody Maker Tent much. That was the only other music stage. Also, someone set up a trailer at the back of the arena calling it 'The Crap Stage' that year where you could go up and play.

Hows about:

The Supersuckers
Reverend Horton Heat
- to show the half assed rock n roll of people like The Bellrays how it's done

Clutch
Fu Manchu
Down
- Bring some old school riffs back again!

Hmmmm......

September 4 2002, 2:25 PM

Aved has pretty much summed up my wishlist. Also, speaking about Radiohead...it would be hard for them to avoid MeanFiddler now seeing as they own a percentage of Glastonbury as well as reading fest.
Anyways, a few additions.....

Soulfly
Machine Head
Metallica-please!
Static X
Deftones
Motorhead
etc.

this man is a veritable font of knowledge.

September 4 2002, 4:00 PM

you ever thought about compiling a database-y kinda thing with the reading line-ups? it's a really sad idea, i know, but i've always wanted one to peruse. the roskilde festival keeps records of who played each year.

i'm so sad :(

Line-up database

September 4 2002, 4:42 PM

Err... I started work on one, but it's a massive task. Involves programming, too!. Perhaps I should just do an alphabetical list of bands, with the stage and the year they played? Any thoughts?

Re: Line-up database

September 4 2002, 4:50 PM

maybe you could just do it by year they played

drypsy

it would definitely be a start

September 4 2002, 5:18 PM

probably easier once you've got it all in one place. perhaps just endless page after page of all the line-ups?

September 6 2002, 9:27 AM

Okay, okay...

September 9 2002, 7:02 PM

I'll probably do it alphabetically, as databases on the web are a black art to me at the moment (but on my list of things to learn. I guess if I do the donkey-work in table form in Word then I can at some later date use it to make a database. Also, I could order the information in a couple of ways: alphabetically, by year, by number of appearances, for instance. Just don't expect it anytime soon - have you any idea the number of bands that have played at Reading? Bring back the old days - one stage, 11 or 12 bands a day. Niice and easy. meant you never missed anyone, either.
