In Kalkriese "place of the Varus Battle" haven't been found soldier money, the copper coins (asses) but only precious metal coins!

As of the end of 1999, a total of 3 gold, 512 silver coins and 354 copper coins have been found at Kalkriese. Take with all the miliatry equipment, mule skeletons and human remains bearing the signs of violent death, it's perfectly clear that this was the site of a Augustan-era BATTLE involving Roman troops.

It was the finding of copper coins at the site by Major Tony Clunn that first sparked archaeological interest in Kalkriese. Copper coins continue to be found in the ongoing digs there.
