The NICU at my local hospital has a huge turnaround of social workers. Some seem to "understand" the concept of the plastic---others DO look at you as though you have grown an extra set of eyes.
I have previously purchased a few yards of medium-thickness clear vinyl, cut it in a rectangle so it can be folded and easily slipped into a demise wrap----baby is placed on top of this, bottom part of wrap is folded up over baby to chest level, wrap is closed over this, then photo is taken. Rectangle is then removed and discarded. Demise wrap is then given to parents WITH picture of baby in it.
I have read on some sites that parents VERY MUCH want the STAINED garment---it means "their baby was there."
I think it is valid enough to continue being courageous enough (to ask the NICUs if they want this)to be considered to have grown an extra set of eyes.
