Thanks for asking about the 2008 newsletters. They will be in the same spot on the website as the others. Jo has been busy working on the new website and caring for her ailing father so it may be a while longer before they get posted.

Thank you, Mary for letting us know. I have been praying for Jo and her father. Will continue to keep Jo and her family in our prayers. Prayers do help, many times that is all we have, is our Heavenly Father to talk with.

In Memorium - Dot Fulton - NIN angel wing burial designer
by
In Memorium – Dot Fulton
It is with deepest regret that I am letting our Newborns in Need volunteers know of the passing of one of our dearest volunteers. Dot (Dorothy) Fulton passed away yesterday.. Many of you who attended our first two Newborns in Need conventions in Houston, Missouri may remembering meeting Dot and/or being instructed by her on how to cut out and sew our proprietarial angel wing burial gown and bonnet layette set.
Dot designed our angel wing burial garment and sewed many of them for donation to hospitals. She was a dedicated volunteer that spent untold hours with the first first NIN chapter, the Ozarks Chapter. In fact, Dot was helping with NIN before we even had our 501 c 3. As NIN beings another ‘chapter’ in our history, it is with sadness that we bid fond farewell to those who have left us and passed on the legacy to be continued forward.
For those of you who want to send a card or letter to her family, please send it to my address below or email to order@grandmothersattic.net and I will be sure her family will get it. Dot’s funeral will be held in Ozark, MO this coming week. She is very much loved and will be sadly missed.

Thanks for knitting and crocheting for the babies. There are two options for where to send your completed items. The first would be a chapter close to you. There is a list of all of the current chapters on the website. You can find it at http://www.newbornsinneed.org/html/chapter_list.html
The other option is to send them directly to the national office in Pfafftown, NC. I'd say the best choice would probably be to one of the local chapters. Sending them to the office in North Carolina would make it take longer to get the items back out to the babies who need them the most.
I don't have a chapter anywhere near me here in Washington State so I ship my items to a variety of different chapters around the country. If I've made warm hats or blankets I pick a chapter that is in a cold part of the country, or one where I know they have been having bad weather.
Any of our chapters would be happy to have your donation. Hope this helps.

I am so excited to be able to tell you all about the new NIN website that was launched late last week. Jo St John has been working literally night and day and boy did she do a great job redesigning it!
I have this message board bookmarked so I normally don't go through the main website to get here. If you are like me, please take a few minutes and go check it out. There is music and a video as well new photos along with features you are used to seeing. I love all of the changes and hope that all of you will stop by soon and see what Jo has done.
Make sure and check out the new National newsletter, it has all sorts of important information.
Huge thanks to Jo for all the hard work - and for making the new NIN site so special.

Jo St John, president of our NIN Indianapolis Chapter and NIN webmaster is amazing. She has spent countless hours for years in dedicated service to Newborns in Need.
The updated website is absolutely gorgeous. It's more than just an update, it is a marvelous new design. Take time to check it out.
PS. For those of you on slower connections, as the page starts to open, quickly scroll down to the bottom of the page and turn the music off by clicking the control. If you don't, your computer may lock up. Sometimes when music is placed on a website, there is no control to turn it off and no way to stop it from everything locking up.
It's nice that Jo put the music control on the front page of the website for those with older machines (many of our ladies have them) and slow land lines (some rural communities don't offer high speed internet yet). It also helps when you are at work and don't want the music alerting everyone in the office to what page you are opening on the net.
Thanks again, Jo, the website is a lovely 'face' of NIN to the world.

It seems prayers are helping -- so far all test results are coming back negative. Dad is recovering slowly -- he looks so much better. Further test results aren't expected until Monday so it's going to be a long weekend.
Thanks to everyone who's thinking and praying for Dad.

Thanks so much for the prayers .... Dad had emergency surgery for a perforated ulcer in the duodenun (sp?) and when they tried to take himm off the ventilater after surgery he was unable to maintain proper oxygenation yesterday.
Today he was taken off the ventilator and is doing fairly well. The surgery site is of course painful.
Yesterday the dr also drained fluid off his chest cavity and a high percentage of infection was found.
Dad also has stage IV Lung Cancer so everything combined is taking a real toll on him. The dr is optimistic tho but we're taking one hour at a time.
Thanks again,
Jo

I bought a used embroidery machine less than a year ago and have been using it to make FSL (free-standing lace) angels that we use with our bereavement layettes. I found one design on the internet that was relatively inexpensive and use that one quite a bit, but I can only get 3 of them in my largest hoop. I have been able to squeeze 6 of the smallest FSL angels from Criswell into 1 hooping but it does not have a hanging loop.
Does anyone here digitize designs? Can you make a free-standing lace angel or angel designed to be done on organza that includes a hanging loop? 2" to 3" tall is a good size.
Also - does anyone know of any places to get inexpensive, but good quality embroidery thread and/or water soluble stabilizer?
BTW - I loved seeing the previous embroidery posts on the board.
Have a good day!

Have you tried using a program to resize the design you have rather than trying to design a new one? I use Embird and have resized lots of designs. If you can E-mail the design to me I'll take a crack at it. Be sure to let me know what format the design needs to be in.

Just need a little advice and input please. I crocheted an afghan for what I'd consider to be a preemie size -- about 18 to 19 inches square. But I'm wondering if this is too small? Should I purchase more yarn and add to it? I couldn't find recommended sizes for afghans and blankets anywhere on the website. (Maybe I just missed it.) Anyway, your opinions are appreciated.
Thanks! Linda
Posted on Jan 27, 2008, 7:55 PM from IP address 69.224.95.173
My experience with the hospitals that we serve is that if the afghan is intended to be used in the NICU, they prefer larger afghans - at least 28 inches.
If the afghan is intended for bereavement, then the afghan can vary from 15" up to 30" square.
however, we recently had one hospital ask for 20" square afghans for the NICU.
So, the bottom line is .... it all depends on where it's going but there's usually a hospital that will say 'that is exactly the size we prefer'

Hailey Sanders who is 5 years old, was diagnosed Dec. 20th with bone marrow cancer.
Her Mother has set her up her own website and it’s so neat. You can go on there and leave messages if you want. Hailey LOVES to get mail or email.
Once again, I THANK YOU ALL for your continued prayers for her and all of our family as we go through this ordeal for the next 2 years.
Thank you all for your friendship and I really appreciate you getting her name on your prayer lists at church, email her name to all of your friends and family and just telling everyone about her and ask for prayers. That is the ONLY thing that is getting us all through this.
Here is the address and it will take you right to the page. You can tell her that you are one of her “Nana Sharon’s” friends. That will thrill her! Her Mom prints off the messages and is keeping them in a scrapbook for her. THANKS AGAIN!!!!

Many of you have sent me a heads up you are coming to the convention, but you just haven't sent the registration form in yet. I am curious as to how far it is for everyone that is coming, and how are you getting to Ohio. I am thinking with everyone coming from all over, I bet there will be areas where we are on the same roads. Wouldn't it be fun if we could figure out where everyone is along the way. Let me know your route and we'll plot it on a map and see what it looks like.
I'll start the ball rolling. We are coming from Pfafftown, NC and according to mapquest it will take 6 hours and 18 minutes, 393 miles.
We will drive through, NC, VA, WVA and into Ohio.
Let's map it!
Posted on Jan 22, 2008, 11:50 PM from IP address 65.188.249.223
Seattle to Chicago (or Denver) to Columbus. I'm letting a very qualified United Airline pilot do all the hard work and I'll get 2200 air miles. I put it in Mapquest and it says 35 hours which would basically be my whole vacation. One of these days we'll have one close enough for me to drive to.
I suspect I'll be getting the prize for coming the furthest distance.

Hi, Elaine & I are going to try and make it to the Convention in Newark, OH this year. We haven't sent in our reservations as of yet. I missed last years and I really miss not attending and seeing old friends and making new ones.
I will be coming from Tucson, AZ and I just checked map quest and they said 28 hours and 28 min. the distance is 1,942 1/2 miles. I will not be driving I am going to let the piolets take me and I haven't make my reservation as of yet but I am sure I will fly from Tucson, AZ to Denver, CO and then into Columbus, OH. I am sure this will be a all day flight with the layover.

Can you believe that the next NIN National convention is just 3 months away? I was looking at the calendar today and realized that the deadline to get in your reservations and payments is March 1st...that is just around the corner. Time sure has flown since the last convention in Bolivar.
For those of you who did not attend the 2006 convention, it was held at the same location that Ann Marie Van Guilder's chapter will again be hosting the upcoming convention. There is a lovely website that describes the retreat center. Please visit the website when you have a moment. www.stspeterandpaulretreatcenter.org
If you have the opportunity to spend a little extra time in the area I'm including a couple of links for you. One is for the Licking County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the other is for Longaberger. If you are a collector of these lovely baskets you already know the quality. If you have not seen these before they are amazing and the homestead has great shopping...I left a few dollars there on my last trip

OK, back to convention info. One of the great things about convention is getting to visit with old friends and meet new ones. Another big draw is the classes. I am always looking for new patterns and new ways of doing things and convention is the perfect place to get renewed energy and inspiration.
The Ohio chapter has planned classes in accordance with results of a survey taken at 2007 Convention – we think you will love the change. All classes will be hands on – everyone will have the opportunity to attend each class. Patterns/yarn/material/sample pieces for all classes will be provided
If all of the above information has not sent you running to find your checkbooks, our chef's Tom & Tom are making up our menus for the convention and I have permission to give you a sneak peek.
For those of you arriving and checking in on Thursday, dinner will be baked chicken, salad, vegetables, rolls, dessert, tea & coffee.
Friday & Saturday breakfast:
Eggs, bacon, toast, cereal, fruits, juice, tea and coffee. Breakfast is 7:00-8:30. Hotel guests are welcome also!!
Lunch Friday & Saturday:
Homemade soups, full salad bar, make your own salads, make your own sandwiches, tea, coffee and dessert.
Friday night banquet is going to be held at the Retreat Center this year. The menu is Prime Rib, Pork Tenderloin, mashed potatoes, vegetables, salad, rolls, coffee, tea and desserts.
The deadline is fast approaching and our host chapter needs to hear from you soon. It is very difficult to plan how much food, how many pattern samples and kits to make, and how many Welcome tote bags to make when you aren't sure how many people are attending. Think of it as sending in that RSVP card for the party.
Looking forward to seeing lots of you in Ohio in just a few weeks.

Thanks

Thanks for asking about the pacifiers. There are preemie pacifiers but as Debra said they are hard to find and can be prohibitively expensive. NIN loves getting these donated as it is one of the few things that our volunteers can't make.
The best size would be for newborns.

Thank you for asking about Baby's First Christmas, we were very excited and pleased with the way it turned out. Our first focus is the babies and after having extended our services to the older children during Christmas we were not sure how going back to doing just the babies would turn out. But I am pleased to say that we did approximately 1000 stockings with seven items in each stocking generally, bib, bottle, sleeper, pacifier, onesie, receiving blanket and stuffie or soft toy. It is an extra special time for us to serve the babies and the donations from special people like yourself help make is all possible. We would love to continue the project next year.
If you do not mind me asking, was there another group or individual that was interested in how everything turned out?
Thank you for all you have done and we look forward to hearing from you in the future.
Sincerely,
Mary Swanson

I am so excited to finally be back and able to participate more here on the message board. As some of you know I had a little run-in with my car door back in September that resulted in a badly broken finger.
As painful, and inconvenient, as I knew that would be, I did not expect it would have too much effect on the things I was doing. Having never broken a bone I was ignorant of how challenging it could make things.
There were some setbacks and my Dr imposed some pretty stringent restrictions a lot of which included the amount of time I could spend on the computer as well as knitting. Since my job required a great deal of computer work I had to make some hard decisions about participating here as much as I had in the past. Unfortunately paying my rent took precedence. I still posted a little but not as much as I wanted to and I missed chatting with all of you.
The good news is that finally the restrictions have been lifted and as you can tell from this post - I can type again!
I am excited to be back and looking forward to all of you telling me what you have been working on.
Hugs,
Mary/Seattle

I think my problem is coordination - I can hold the yarn and the hook, I just haven't found a way for the tension to not feel really funny.

All your talk about helping each other at the 2008 conventions is music to my ears. That is what our
convention classes will be offering to everyone.
Learn a new skill or brush up on an old skill. Our
classes will be an hour long, with yarn and materials
provide. Everyone will be working on a project to
take home. Sewers and quilters will make projects to
take home also. We want everyones hand busy, when they
are not munching on our wonderful snacks.
We are working hard to make this convention a fun time
together for our whole NIN family. What we don't have is
NOT ONE REGISTRATION from another chapter !!!! How about
someone being the first to sign up from their state!!
The first person who sends in their registration and check in the mail will win a wonderful surprise gift.

Just wondering how cold everyone is- we have had wierd temps ranging from almost 70 some days to highs of 20's others. A roller coaster here, but at least we aren't freezing all the time.
How's everyone else doing this new year?

Thanks Jacki! I think these look like wonderful tools and would make punching holes so much easier on fleece and flannel.
Because that website post is a year old I have sent an email to the address listed to inquire about the product. I'll let the list know if/when I receive a reply.

For those of you who like to crochet around fleece, I found a web site that tells you how to get a rotary blade that cuts the holes for you. Go to http://www.yarnsandmusings.com/. Scroll down the page and it will direct you to the supplier.
