Happy Birthday, TeLesa & Deb!
by
Just now on the NIN site late in the evening, and I see that it is TeLesa's birthday! Happy Birthday, TeLesa!
Then I saw that it's Deb's in MD. Happy Birthday, Deb!
Well, they say things come in threes. It's my birthday, too! (Although I'm a bit older than TeLesa - like 19 years!)
Looking forward to meeting you all at Convention this year - my first!

I belong to a Lion's club on Long Island, New York. We heard about "Newborns in Need" from a member who invited the President of the LI chapter to one of our meetings. We held a "baby shower". All the members came with new baby clothes, blankets and supplies. All new and beautiful. We also presented them with a check. It was such a success and we all enjoyed it so much we're doing it again next month!!

Thank you so much for holding a baby shower! I am very happy to hear that you will be doing it again next month. We have many babies that need our assistance and donations like that from your group allow us to reach out and help those who are in need. Please extend my thanks to all of your Lion's
Also, I have to say that I really love your name. As a matter of fact, my mom has the same one! Thanks again

TeLesa, you are only four months older than my daughter and she too is a young woman that gets things done.
I admire you young people that can take charge and move mountains in service to others.
So happy you had such a wonderful birthday. Your own daughter sounds like a young lady full of love. Sounds like you are doing a super job as "Mom" as well.Blessings to you. Hugs,Ann

Here I was thinking that I was getting older (not ready to admit old yet *grin*). Almost 40 sounds a bit scary and I have had a couple of girl friends get really depressed at about this age. Thank you so much for giving me a new "younger" way to look at things. I used to think that I would eventually slow down my life so that I could relax but now I realize that I am just a busy person and I am happy that way. I also realize now that perhaps I am still a "young" woman although I doubt I can move mountains

Thank you so much for your birthday wishes. I guess you could say that I was dined but there was no wine Lee cooked supper for me and the kids last night. He grilled a tenderloin and fixed baked potatos and green beans. It was scrumpcious! I passed on the wine though - I just don't like the taste
It has been really wonderful to work with you on convention. It is just around the corner and I can hardly wait to see everyone again

Thank you so much for your birthday wishes! I woke up this morning to one of the best gifts. My daughter made me a "Happy Birthday Mom" sign that she hung with tape to the ceiling last night after I went to bed. It was one of the first things I saw this morning when I went through to wake them all up for school. My day has been nothing but getting better since then. The girls here at the office had flowers sent to me and they also took me out to lunch. I have also received birthday cards in the mail and through email. I would say that I am one spoiled girl to have so many fine people who care about me - you included!
Thanks again

I am so happy to hear that your birthday falls on the same day as mine. I doubt I will forget yours now although I forgot that mine was today until someone reminded me a couple of days ago
I hope that your day is wonderful! I can hardly wait to meet you at convention

I had a marvelous birthday. I worked at the office a good part of the day with some beautiful flowers to keep me company (from the girls - CJ, Mary, Fran & Cindy). Then I went home and my husband had also bought me an arrangement of flowers that were lovely. He also fixed supper for me and the kids - it was scrumpcious! I hope that your day was just as great as mine

Happy Birthday TeLesa,
I am a volunteer in K.C. and you were one of the first people I met when we came to Houston. I also attended the second convention in your city. I am continuing to make items. I met a couple of gals from Clinton, MO at that time and send items to them. I also enjoyed making many Christmas bibs last year for the stocking projects. I hope you have a wonderful day. I hear through the chat room you and your family have had flu and been very ill. I hope you are all on the road to better health. Keep up the good work. I am so impressed with all your hard work and love being able to contribute in a small part.
God bless you and may you have many more birthdays.

I remember you! You gave me one of your SWAPS. If memory serves correctly, it was a safety pin with colored beads hanging from it so that it looked like a US flag. Am I right?
Thank you so much for your birthday and get well wishes. Over the last couple of months all of my family has been hit by the flu bug but thankfully they are all over that now. My youngest son, Zackery, still has an ear ache and was out of school for a couple of days this week but he is feeling much better today
I am happy to hear that you are still out there and helping us to serve God's most precious babies. We really appreciate you!

Sunday afternoon I had the privilege to attend a Service of Remembrance hosted by the Bereavement team and staff members of the hospital I sew burial layettes for. It was a very moving ceremony. They unveiled a memorial quilt that my friend makes every year with a theme. There was music from a talented harpist and some singers. Poems were read and then several staff members started the ceremony of reading the names of all the children lost last year, and as each name was read, the family lit their candles. The room was aglow with flickering light and I looked around at all the tearful eyes and was humbled by the courage of those who lit candles in memory of beloved ones whose lights were extinguished too soon. The room vibrated with thier pain and grief, and yet in the face of that, what I knew was, that love was stronger than that. And when we come together to help each other, healing happens.
I feel like the experience has added depth to my ability and given my art wings. I will be much more mindful of each bitty garment; it will be the vestment of Angels.
It helped me to feel their grief. For in that I saw the full circle of service that we perform. They are not just nameless entities we deliver bags of gowns for, sorted by size and color. They are precious mementos of one of their own, their heart, their love. We are so fortunate to be inspired to serve them, in this the hardest time they will ever face, the loss of their baby.
I felt honored that the Bereavement team considered me as part of them. That my small part is important to the whole process of healing.
Thanks for listening.
hugs, laura g

I am so glad you had the opportunity to attend the service. I know the local hospital here does one each year during the holidays and it is incredibly emotional. As the hospital chaplain reads the child's name the family comes forward and places an ornament on the holiday tree. I promise you there is not a dry eye in the place.

I am thinking about making some of the tiny lay on outfits. When you print out the lay on pattern (for burial outfit)does this print the exact size needed or does it need to be enlarged somehow? Do the edges get turned under or does the garment get lined? What would be an appropriate material for these? I have been told that sometimes these infants are lost so early that you cannot determine the sex, what color should I use?
Thanks Georgia

Do hospitals accept no sew blankets...They can be made any size and usually are 2 layers thick...? You cut strips on the edges 4 to 5 inches and then tie them together...They look really nice... I have heard where some people make it one layer thick...

my hospitals indicate they're to hot to use within the hospital. Also, there's risks of fingers and toes getting caught in the 'fringe' caused by knotting.
When I get knotted fleece blankets, I save those for the local crisis pregnancy center.

I was directed to this site via Oprah.com and have been wanting to find a charity just like this! I sew for a living (wholesale to local boutiques) and I make primarily baby items; lots of vintage type fabrics.
Please let me know if there is a chapter in TN; if not should just call local hospitals or can you point me in the right direction with NIN?
Thanks!

Dear Denise.
So glad you found us! I found one chapter listed for Tenn., on the NIN main site. it is:
Middle Tennessee
President Margie Welch
1300 Woodbridge Dr
Lewisburg, TN 37091
midtn@newbornsinneed.org
www.newbornsinneed.org/midtn
You can also send donations to the national office.
If you can make it, there will be a national convention in Ohio, at the end of April and you would get to meet some members and take classes. You would have to register now, but I hear there are spaces left at the center we will be staying at and it promices to be a fantastic time! The cost is very reasonable too. Don't worry about being new, I have never been to a convention before ,I am so looking forward to seeing what everyone makes. Details can be found on a link on the NIN national website.
Welcome to you, if you have any questions, please ask. Look forward to hearing from you,

Thank you all ahead of time for attend this year convention. Our goal is that you will all leave the convention with new ideas, new friends and lots of enthusiasm. We want you to go home fired up to work for the babies in our areas.

Well, convention is just around the corner and the deadline has passed by so fast that I didn't notice. Ann Marie has allowed me to give you one more chance to join us in Ohio. Anyone wishing to register for convention may still do so but please be quick so that we can prepare for your visit. Information can be found on this section of our website http://www.newbornsinneed.org/Convention2006/. Please join us if you can
I looked at my calendar this morning and was amazed to see that convention is in just 6 weeks. I don’t know where the time has gone; it has just flown by this year.
I know Ann Marie mentioned that almost 100 are signed up. It will be great to see old friends again and meet new volunteers who have not been to convention before.
For those of you who are unsure about coming I can tell you that it is an amazing experience. I don't belong to a chapter so don't have the opportunity to get together regularly with people who share this passion with me. I leave convention re-energized each year, refreshed and ready to try new skills I have learned. The speakers are always so inspirational and help me remember why what we do is so important, and what a huge difference we are all making.
If you are not registered yet, or if you are not sure about coming, I hope you will join us. Each convention has been unique and I know Ann Marie and her chapter have been working hard to make this convention special too.
Looking forward to seeing lots of you there.
Hugs,
Mary/Seattle

You may not belong to a chapter but we value your dedication to helping us here at the Home Office. In case many of you don't know this, Mary does most of the monitoring for this message board and our yahoo group. We monitor these groups to keep spam from being filtered through to our volunteers (you wouldn't believe what some folks would post here if we allowed it). It is not an easy task but Mary does an incredible job and she finds time to make baby items too! She works closely with me through email and also over the phone so that she can pass along information from Home Office allowing me time to work in other areas. You are wonderful Mary and again I thank you for all that you do for NIN

That is great news, I'm glad you were able to get the time off. You are going to have a great time.
This will be my fourth convention and every one of them have been terrific and very unique to the area they were held in. I actually don't have the time approved yet, even though I have over 300 hours of vacation time available to use. It isn't like I am indispensible, my boss just seems reluctant to approve ANY request until the last possible moment.
I've made my plane reservations and Ann Marie has my registration forms so you know where I will be that weekend. I am just trusting that it will all work out.
Looking forward to getting a chance to meet you!

Excellent poem. As presidnt of Stitches of Love, a charity for infants and children in need, I can attest to a world full of wonderful, caring, giving people, who spend endless hours each and every day knitting, crocheting, embroidering and sewing for the smallest of infants. God Bless Them All! I believe that's why we are here.

You have probably noticed that it has been sort of quiet from home office on the message boards lately. I heard from TeLesa today and she asked me to post a quick message for her.
Both she and the family have been ill and the past few weeks have been a real challenge for her. Not only is she ill herself but she is dealing with 3 children who are in various stages of the flu too, and she is trying to spend time in the office too.
If you have sent emails recently and have not heard from her please be assured she is not ignoring them, she is just buried under all of them!
I sure admire her dedication. I had a recent bout with a blood infection and I know the last place I wanted to be was working. She could sure use our good wishes and prayers right now - and our patience too.
Thanks everyone!

HI -
I am trying to knit up some hat/ socks/ and mits sets to send your way. I have several hats knitted so I just started on the tube socks I was going to knit to match. My question is what is the circ of the leg. I looked at your size chart and depending on the yarn my hats fit sizes 28 weeks, 32 weeks and 40 weeks. From your chart I think I have the leanth for the socks figured out, now I just need the circ so they aren't too tight for the babies. Any help would be great.

That's not a measurement I've seen anywhere. For 40 weeks you can probably check out a local department store looking for NB size socks. I'm not sure what to suggest for smaller sizes.

Hi Laura, Answer to your request is easy. At Convention everyone looks the same. Picture a BIG HEART with a BIG SMILE and there you are. You go there not knowing everyone and come away not wanting to leave anyone. We are all about BABIES and they are everywhere. Lots of good ideas you will come away with and memories you will never be able to erace. It is a weekend full of laughter, hugs and smiles enjoyed by all and many thanks to the host chapter for their hard work putting this together. Plan to step out the everyday world of chaos into a weekend of excitement. No cares or worries just fun volunteers that look like you. See you there. HUGS and SMILES, Marlene

Well, The poor little lambs are SO homely even thier mothers would not love them! No amount of ribbons and roses would help the poor dears, so I will return them! The plush lambs are not bad, though, the embroidered crosses on them are subtle and with a nice bow and a rose, these would be a suitable addition to a layette. They are 14.99 a doz., not bad for a memento.I hope to order more before easter as they are a holiday item.
Got them at Oriental trading co. if anyone is looking.

Oh, I was so hoping you would be able to fix them up and tell me what to do! They certainly aren't representive of the picture they posted of them, are they??
Posted on Feb 23, 2006, 9:01 AM from IP address 205.188.117.6
No, Debby, not even all the NIN genius in our whole nation can save the lambs! But, I do want to order more of the plush lambs with the embroidered crosses. Those can be decorated and will be sweet in a layette.and are only a bit more than a dollar each. That I can afford.
But, thats how we discover things, by trying them out!
Anyone else have any good places for items like this?

Put your thinking caps on girls! I want to make matching hankies for the burials, for Moms, and I need a poem to include, that is not "religious" as some familys we serve have thier own beliefs and I want to be respectful. I need something not too mushy, if you know what I mean, just something about "a mother's tears". Can you help???
How many days till convention? anyone know???

May bring tears to my eyes,

Let me hear the beautiful music of her name.
It soothes my broken heart

Here are a couple of poems that I found. I don't know if you are interested or not but I thought both of these were nice:
--------------------------------------
No Person is Ever Truly Alone
by Richard Fife
No person is ever truly alone.
Those who live no more,
Whom we loved,
Echo still within our thoughts,
Our words, our hearts.
And what they did
And who they were
Becomes a part of all that we are,
Forever.
---------------------------------------
Our tears are still falling.
The heartaches will never heal.
You have left a vacant place,
no one can ever fill.
A million times we've needed you.
A million times we've cried
if love could have saved you
you never would have died.
If tears could build a stairway
and heartaches make a lane,
We would walk the path to heaven
and bring you back again.

Good luck finding a poem that will work on your hankies
