I just found out that the NIN website is not going to be available today. I've been trying all morning to read the latest newsletters and getting pretty frustrated when I could not access them from Jo's link. Looks like they are doing some maintenance at the hosting site and expect us to be offline for a "significant" portion of the day.
Guess I will just have to wait a little longer to see what the Ozark and Mesa chapters have been up to recently
Hugs,
Mary

Hi all,
Sandy garey will be back here , after finishing her 2,000 mile hike for NIN, in a few weeks, We need more cards sent here to present to her on her glorious finale to a monumental hike! I am sure it would make her feel so good to have you here "in spirit" if you can't join us in person. She deserves that.
I had a chance to visit with her for 3 days while she stayed over at my house, and you would love to know her. And the stories of some of the challenges and difficulties she overcame, the heat, rocks, long hauls in the pouring rain, slick mud hills would make you look at her in awe and wonderment. And she did it for us. US!!! For OUR babies, she walked for the Angels and we need to show her we appreciate it. To give her a hero's welcome back. She has spent months away from her family and her comfy bed so our angels can have what they need.
I have asked all my grand kids to draw her a picture of Sandy and Simon hiking the trail. I showed them maps to see how far she walked. They wanted to know what she would see on the mountains and it became a nice lesson in nature, geography and why people care about bitty babies that are not thier own.
I am asking that you have children you know draw a picture for Sandy. As a mom, grandmom, and teacher, childrens pictures will touch her heart. I will pin them up and take a photo of her with them to post online. Please, help me welcome her back as our hero!
mail to laura gerrty, 963 North st, . pittsfiled, ma., 01201 and write hiker on the envelope.
God bless you all, hugs Laura-g

Thank you so much for the reminder on this. I had a card all set to go but lost track of it during my move. I'll make it the weekend project to find it and get it in the mail to you. Sandy is doing such an amazing thing and following along in her journals has been great fun.
Do you have an estimated date when she will complete this trek?
Thanks!

Dear Mary,
My best guess, is around the second week in Oct. Not sure as there are so many variables. If weather holds, and no problems she may be earlier. But she did get a bad sore that left her hung up for several days before she got to my house, so we have to wait for her call and pray for her every day.
Thanks for your attention to the cards, I know it will mean a lot to her.

Would like to recieve patterns for premature baby items. Have plenty of regular size stuff, but don't know how to successfully alter for preemie size! Items would be donated to local hospitals and other charitable orgs.
Posted on Sep 14, 2005, 7:31 PM from IP address 68.143.139.114
There are three patterns sets available on the NIN website to purchase. All of them contain an assortment of items appropriately sized for preemies. They are available for $6.50 each. Here is the url
We are always happy to have another person helping. Here is a link to the free crochet patterns on the NIN website. You should be able to just click on it and go straight to the pattern index page.
Sandy has completed the 100 miles of wilderness trail with out falling into the water or being carried downstream by the current. "It was quite an experience and I am glad Simon was not with me. Although I could have use his sense of direction last nigh coming off Barron Mountain."
Sandy is having dinner tonignt with Ann Palmer and one of her volunteers,in Maine. Our NIN chapters in several states are getting to meet Sandy and sharing her adventure.
Please keep praying for Sandy as she completes her journey,early/middle October.

To help our Newborns in need with their relief efforts after Hurrican Katrina. They should be up and running tomorrow night. I'll post here when I get them listed.
Just thought I'd mention though that while I was looking around to see who I would list for, they have a list of organizations that are helping with Hurrican katrina relief. If you'd like Newborns in Need to be included on that list there is a place to add it. There are about 15 organizations on the list, so if you were added it should add some exposure to the organization.
Lori
P.S. I used to post fairly regularly here and then had a baby 11 months ago, plus we moved, and am just now getting time again to do some stuff for Newborns in Need!

Thank you so much for listing your auctions with all of the proceeds being benefited to NIN. We really appreciate your support to our cause and your suggestion for the exposure

I want to make quilts for these little miracles. Our grandson is a preemie at St. Joes in Phoenix and has a beautiful quilt made by one of you. He is doing well and has been moved to the intermediate nursery.
My question is: what are the dimensions of the isolet quilts?
Jan
Posted on Sep 3, 2005, 8:47 PM from IP address 64.12.116.195
I'm so glad your grandson is doing well and that we were able to provide a quilt for him.
The blankets used inside the isolettes are 18x22. Quilts used on top of the isolettes to keep the light out are 32x50 for the Hill Rom Isolettes or 45x60 for the Ohio Beds.
Keep us up to date on your grandson and let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.
Hugs

Thank you so much for the information. I am going to start today. Braden is gaining weight daily. He is up to 3lbs 13.5 oz. and decided he didn't need that feed tube in so he took it out! The nurses told Holly (Mom) that he really did not need it anyway so they were leaving it out.
What are the Ohio beds? (We are orginally from Ohio)

The "Ohio Isolette" is the round one, that kind of looks like a clear barrel on it's side.....most of the isolettes were like these when Ethan was in the NICU there....
Posted on Sep 4, 2005, 11:27 PM from IP address 216.224.249.96
Hi, My son (and my daughter too) were also in the NICU at St. Joe's. He also had a little quilt in the isolette with him and it was 24x24 inches. He is 4 years old now and we still have his little quilt!!!!
Posted on Sep 4, 2005, 3:41 PM from IP address 216.224.249.96
It depends on what you are looking for and how much time you want to spend looking.....the easiest place is JoAnn's, though it is probably more expensive. I also use AZ home Fabrics and SAS.....SAS is less expensive, but it takes time to look through what they have.....and they only take cash. I also meant to add that the quilt that was over Ethan's isolette was a about 45x55 inches and was his crib blanket. When he was in the NICU, no one was providing isolette covers....
Posted on Sep 4, 2005, 11:23 PM from IP address 216.224.249.96
I was thinking that SAS may be a place to check out. I have not been there in ages. I stopped by WalMart this morning and they had quite afew cute Christmas prints for $2 a yd. I am so excited about helping out. I think I have found a very worthwhile charity and I know the little ones and especially their parents are appreciative.

if you are gearing up to sew and send for the babies in the new orleans area, please remember it is hot and humid there right now. one layer cotton or cotton blend blankets or gowns would be best as electricity and air conditioning is scarce. if all you have is flannel, by all means use it, but one layer only for this purpose.

We just wanted to post an update on our relief efforts for damage inflicted by Katrina. Right now we are letting our Newborns in Need volunteers know to get ready and send donations of baby items and essentials to NIN home office as we have folks working on getting distribution sites set up. As soon as we get the green light on the distribution centers that will be any day now, many many boxes of baby clothing, diapers, bottles, wet wipes, socks, booties, sleepers, diaper bags, blankets, and anything else a baby needs will be immediately sent.
If you would like to help the babies involved in this horrible disaster, you can send boxes of baby items (anything baby or toddler) to:
Newborns in Need
PO Box 385, 112 W Main St
Houston, MO 65483
(417) 967-9441
Fax (417) 967-3941
office@newbornsinneed.org
www.newbornsinneed.org
If you do want to assist with funds to help ship the boxes that are being sent, you can send a donation through paypal to office@newbornsinneed.org You will receive a thank you letter so you know your donation went to where it was supposed to. Make a note that you want a 501 (c) 3 receipt and you can write it off your taxes. If you send a box of baby items, just pop a note in the box as to the value so we can keep track of the help Katrina victims are getting.
Questions ? - just phone 417-967-9441 and ask for Mary.
You want to make a difference instead of just reading the news and feeling helpless? Now you can. Please send your donations our way so that we can pass them along to those who are in need
Hugs,
TeLesa

Hope this won't be off-topic here, but I am appalled by the losses and terrible conditions for survivors of the hurricane in New Orleans, as well as other places along our Gulf coast. I realize that right now they are struggling just to save lives and stop the looting and craziness, but there will be all kinds of long-term needs coming out of this. Especially for all those "hurricane babies" that have just been born!
Could NIN do a special outreach for the hurricane victims? Is there anything special we should "gear up" to make? I feel torn in half whenever I see the bad news on TV right now, and it would be comforting to be able to help in some way. There's only so much money I can donate to the Red Cross right now. Could we send personal care kits? Quilts? Christmas stockings later in the fall? Any ideas?
If anybody knows of links for hurricane relief we can send besides money, please share. Thanks!

I just wanted to take a minute and share this wonderful news on an extraordinary NIN volunteer, Sandy Garey, who is currently hiking over 2,000 miles to help us raise funds. Here is the link to a current article http://www.capitalnews9.com/content/headlines/?SecID=33&ArID=146236. Be sure to watch the video if you get a chance!
By the way, I have updated our main website www.newbornsinneed.org if you would also like to have a look at that

I know I used to get requests occassionally from hospitals and from parents for these for preemies who were allergic to disposables. So I would recommend to contact some of her local NICU's and just let them know who to call when there is a need....Some parents don't have time (or desire) to use cloth. I think they are wonderful and have used them on 3 out of 4 of my kids.....however, now that I have 4 in diapers, disposable is the most practical. Good luck finding a home for the cloth diapers.

Hi Everyone,
I have been looking over the site and I am excited to get involved. I live in Colorado and do not see that there is a chapter here. I don't know enough people to start one either. Have you heard of anyone in the Denver area that would like to get involved?
Posted on Aug 14, 2005, 10:04 PM from IP address 66.199.99.39
Hi. I'm from Colorado as well, and just learned about this organization today and would love to get more involved as I get better at crochet. I'm just learning. I was also disappointed to learn that there is no Colorado chapter. I don't have the personality traits to begin one, or the time. I'm going to keep working on my crochet and checking back to see if a Colorado chapter ever gets going.

Sorry for the delay in posting a project for this month. I am in the middle of moving and to say my world is in total disarray would be a MAJOR understatement!
I know that we are all enjoying the great summer weather and many are vacationing or preparing for school to start soon so I was thinking it would be good to have something simple. Let's focus on anything preemie. Home Office had a request recently for items in the 2-4 pound range and was not able to help...nothing was available in those sizes.
Let's see what we can do to get some items back on the shelves so Home Office doesn't end up in this situation again!
Thanks for helping.
Mary

If anyone has knitting patterns to make items in that size range, I'll gladly make whatever I can--it's just that most patterns I've seen don't say specifically what size preemie the patterns are intended for. What classification would the 2-4 pound babies fall under in the preemie patterns on the main NIN site?
If anyone can help me out, I'll get started--I'm one bootie away from packing a box full of things I've already knitted (and a few might be able to fit preemies, I really don't know) and can jump in for the preemie cause right away.
Thanks!

I was a regular contributor for several years and then I got sidetracked by some other priorities for awhile. Not less important, just different. I am so happy to see that this organization has continued to grow, grow, grow and is full of wonderful volunteers all doing one of my all-time favorite things--making things for tiny people.
I have a couple of projects that I MUST finish and I envision those being finished by October or so (curtains for three rooms for which I've had the fabric over a year already!) and then.....I'm back to my baby things. I have a whole dresser and several other large containers full of baby fabrics and yarn. And I have itchy fingers! I sew, quilt and crochet. I used to keep yarn with me at all times, so that I could whip up a bootie during breaks at work, or get most of a little cap done while waiting at the doctors office. When you do this, you also get a chance to talk about what you're doing and why it's important to you. Waiting anywhere where there's a seat becomes a win-win situation.
I've been reading a lot of the back posts on the board and have caught up on the entire website. I just thought I should be polite, stop lurking and let you all know I was here. I will send goodies as soon as I can. In the meantime, just know I'm with all of you in spirit and I'll get the goods going ASAP.
Blessings,
Judith

This is a really dumb question, but here goes. On the diaper shirts, where do you sew the ribbon ties? Was I supposed to have inserted them between the two layers before I sewed them together? Or do they belong on the inside of the shirt or outside of the shirt? I can't seem to figure it out and make them look right.
Thanks,
Karlyn
