I was recently asked by a hospital to donate burial pouches. I tried to make one but it didn't turn out the way I had hoped. I found some beautiful flannel backed satin that wouldn't need to be lined but couldn't find a way to finish the edges that I thought looked good. Can you tell me how you finish the edges on your burial pouches and do you add lace to all of them or only the girls. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am sorry. I didn't put where I was from when I sent a response to your message that I read.
I am from a tiny town called Welch, Oklahoma. It is in the northeast corner of Oklahoma. We are around 90 miles northeast of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
I also belong to a club. It is called H.C.E. (Home and Community Education). Last year we made memory boxes and gave them to the local hospital. The memory boxes are for parents who lost their baby shortly after birth or was stillborn. It is to keep anything in, that pertains to thier baby, as a keepsake box.
The burial wraps would also be a very good project for my group, but I personally was very interested when I came across this information.
If you can help in any way I would appreciate it. Thank you.

At pouch size, sex often can't be determined, so you might want to make the majority of the pouches unisex, and split the rest girl/ boy; whatever your hospital requests comes first, of course.
As for edge finishing the satin-backed flannel, could you fold the edge twice, narrow hem, and topstitch? Or serge the edge & fold once, then stitch. Hope this helps - Gail in GA

Hi,
I have been making thse wraps for quite some time. I make 2 squares, 10", or 12" or 14". Then one extra that I fold to make triangle. I line them with plastic from a regular food bag. I sew the plastic to the square set first. Turn inside out so plastic is inside. Then put triagle of plastic inside fabric triangle, stitch to side of square, so now you have a diamond shaped pouch. Turn the triangle to other side so seam allowance is inside. I put lace all around the outside edge. For boys or girls. It really makes it special. I also try to do more unisex designs than genger specific, as most hospitals that do high risk , need many a year, and gender wraps limit thier use. I find now that if I round off corners that it is easier and goes faster and does not hurt the finished look. I add ribbon ties a few inches in from 2 corners,on the triangle fabric thru all layers to the back, and I put a ribbon rosebud on the tie. These ties pull the sides in enough to make a sweet little "Angel Pocket". The berevement team from the hospital I sew for says it is the best thing they have ever had for the purpose. Some don't put plastic inside but the hospital likes it as it potects the parents from the more unpleasant aspects of the situation. They also like the hats I make from the smallest knit hats pattern , because they like the head covered too. I try to match them to the angel pockets. and put a rosebud on the top where a pom pom might go. Looks adorable. I hope this was clear and of help to you. If you so a search on fetal demise wraps online , you may find them there too.For pictures.
Good luck! You are doing wonderful work.

Hi, I am sending a fetal demise wrap(Angel Pocket) to NIN headquarters, so they can photo it and post it .Hope it helps. They are so useful to the hospitals and they like them in different sizes. A teenie hat to match(knitted or crocheted) is a lovely touch.

I'm new on the computer and I came across all this information of how to help babies whether they made it or not.
I would be interested in learning how to make the burial pouches.
I at one time worked for my grandfathers funeral home and on his ambulance service.
I quilt and sew.
I would be interested in making the burial pouches and or the wrapes. I really need a picture though, or a pattern.
Would someone please help me.

I read your letter to nin an you said that you found flannel backed satin. I have looked at numerous fabric stores for that certain fabric. I think it would be ideal for baby garments and etc.. But no one around here seems to know what I am talking about, and I haven't been able to find the fabric. If you could share with me where you found it I would surley appreiate it. Thank you, Dolores

My Joann's store carries the flannel back satin, or at least it used to. I have not looked recently. They moved into a new, larger store and I am still trying to figure out where they put everything.
If you are an on-line shopper check out Fabric.com, I know that they have a variety of colors listed for $7.95/yd. I am not affiliated with them but have purchase from them and have been happy with the fabric, the customer service, and the shipping times. The other thing I like is that they cut each yard at 39 inches instead of 36. Also, I believe that shipping is free on your first order.
Good luck finding the fabric.

Dolores,
I found mine at Joann's. Two of the ones I got were in the clearance section. They are pink and blue and have moons, clouds, and stars on them. The design is imprinted into the flannel on the back side. It really makes a unique pattern and is reversible.
They had a small selection of solid unpatterned ones in the same section they keep the cozy & non quilting flannel.
Hope this helps!

Every chance I get I spread the word about NIN, but I still wish more people knew about and were willing to help our tiny babies. At this moment I have a friend in labor 10 weeks early in Albany, NY. She has already had to bury one baby without clothes because this hospital didn't have any tiny burial clothes. While this baby is likely to be fine, she will still be tiny, so I made her several things. But it really got me thinking about why we really exist, in my opinion, to make sure that those tiny babies that don't make it have something special to wear "to heaven". I am finishing up work on a FULL SET of preemie burial patterns and I think it is important to get word out to as many people as possible that there are thousands of babies that need our help.....I know that if we all can come together and spread the word that we can accomplish more for all the little lost angels, as well as those that pull through despite overwhelming odds.

We need to try to get some chapters started in upstate New York. This is a big state with a lot of caring people. The downstate chapter has big enough needs in their area. I tried to start a chapter in this area and didn't get very far. I personally think that my time is better spent serving the babies but the babies in my area aren't being helped. We have a neo-natal unit approximately 20 minutes from my home. There should be people who want to start a chapter in New York. Maybe a few people will see this and respond in your area or in my area. We just have to keep trying.

I am in Phoenix, and although I am not able to get out to work meetings because of having 3 little ones (one severely disabled) at home and one on the way, I do try to do as much as I can to help. I know there are people in areas that we don't have chapters that would be willing to help, but they just don't know about NIN. There are even things that young children could do to help, and I know when I was in school we had to do service projects.....imagine what a difference it could make if we got schools involved.

Hello all, I have been trying to clean out a few things and found several (lots) of the little butterfly shirts like the McCalls pattern but sized down for preemies all cut out of t-shirt knit. I will not get these made but would love to send them on to someone or one of the chapters that would. Will send to the first that emails me and I will pay postage. If you don't mind, please post to the message board here that you have emailed me and they are taken so everyone will know they have a new home.

An online friend just lost her 2 year old this week. She's looking for a velvet bag to put his remains in. Here's what she says:
We are having Zach cremated and they send his "cremains" back to us in a clear plastic bag covered with a white plastic. This is not good enough for him (or me), in my opinion. I am in desperate need of a bag to put his remains in. I have scoured Indianapolis the last day and a half and can't find what I want. I just need a simple rectangle bag with a braided drawstring. It needs to be apx. 8"x10" and I want it to be velvet on the outside and satin on the inside. I also need it in a green color (I'd prefer a darker, hunter type green) I'm sorry if I seem like I'm being picky. The big thing is that I need it by Thursday afternoon (it would probably have to be overnighted). I can send funded paypal immediately for supplies, time and shipping. I am not a sewer and don't really know of anyone near me who can do this. Even if you just have a name of someone I can contact her tomorrow. Thanks in advance for all of your help. You ladies have been so supportive to me thorugh all we have been going through this week.
Is there anyone who would be able to help?? Let me know and I can forward the info to her.

On the Yahoo Groups message board Laura was asking about the monthly project.
Even though we are enjoying sunshine here in Seattle today it is still pretty cold and I know most of the country is coping with snow and very cold weather so how about we do hats and sleepers this month...and maybe finish up any UFO's left from last year.
I know for me those UFO's will probably take up most of the month as I had jury duty in December that really messed up my plans. Managed to get to age 50 without being called so I guess it was my time, just hope it doesn't happen for another 50 LOL.
The national office has told me they are very happy to get the items we are sending in each month as they seem to go out just as quickly as they come in. There is such a tremendous need for the things that we make. I do not have exact numbers of items received because I did not ask them to specifically count them. One of the reasons was that I had not come up with an easy way to do it without adding another layer of complexity to the job CJ and the others do at the national office.
If anyone has ideas I am certainly open to them. I just want to make sure that someone is just as comfortable sending in 1 or 2 items as they are 5 or 10, or more if that is the amount of time they have to work on NIN projects.
Happy New Year!
Mary

I guess I wanted to say a few things, first of all, thankyou! I had preemie twins (14 weeks early) this May. Thankfully, one of my girls made it home. Our other daughter, Mya, passed away this month at 6 months old. The only clothing items they owned when they were so tiny (1lb 10oz, and 1lb 14oz) were made by Newborns in Need. It really helps to see your babies looking like real little babies in clothes, not just a tangle of wires. I have started sewing since my first daughter came home and have found it to be theraputic since the passing of my other daughter. I just found the local chapter this evening and look forward to joining them and donating my time and efforts. Also, there is a need for, though not as much, clothing for a little bit older babies that have lengthier stays in the NICU. Our daughter was one of these kids. Most of the sick kids that are in the neo unit for a long stay are still hooked up to things like wires, monitors, picc lines, broviacs, g-tubes, etc. This makes it very difficult for them to wear any type of store-bought clothing/gowns. Our NICU (along with others I'm sure) was/is definately in need of a small variety of bigger babies gowns suitable for infants like our daughter (in the 10-15 lb range). Anyway, just wanted to say thankyou.

These friendly ladies mainly use round looms, based on same principal as Herschel's, and email all day about their hat projects, patterns, tips, techniques, yarns, where they donate, etc., etc. The group has loom knitting links , pattern stitches and patterns in their files. The Knifty Knitter is the plastic 4 loom set made by Provocraft, but they also use other brands, such as Knit a Round, including rake and board looms (for flat knitting) as well as hand made looms. Some really neat looms are made of wood using plain old cotter pins from the hardware store as the pegs ! There are pictures of these in the group's member photo section. The plastic looms are very easy to use, and apparently several 4 1/2 - 5 yr olds are already making baby hats (under supervision, of course). - Gail

Good news...we met our goal for the Christmas Stocking Project!
by
Hi Everyone,
I am SO excited to announce that we have met our goal for the annual Christmas Stocking Project. I am happy to report that we have filled and delivered 1,549 full size stockings! That is 49 stockings over the goal that we set for this year. A great BIG thank you to everyone who helped with this project - we simply couldn't have accomplished this great number without you. I am sure that we have put many a smile on children's faces this year with these wonderful gifts
I also wanted to share with you a photo that we received from Phoenix, AZ. The nurses there in the NICU wanted to thank us for sending the blankets to be used on the babies that are in care. They took pictures of all the babies with Santa included. Here is a photo that was sent with their letter of thanks:
Isn't this picture just the sweetest thing you have seen? How precious it is to see the babies that we serve all wrapped up in a blanket made from love with Santa so close. I just had to share it with everyone. I hope that you all have the merriest of holidays
Love,

This is truly a very beautiful photo. Do you by any chance know who made the blanket? Is the 1st Christmas machine embroidered on? That was a terriffic idea and a gorgeous design. Can the pattern/machine instructions for the design be purchased? It's never too early to start for next year.
