Thanks for asking about chapter displays at the upcoming convention in Newark, OH. I had to check because I was not sure. There will be chapter displays again and they will use the same tri-fold boards that were used for the last convention in Bolivar, MO.
If you have other questions please let me know!

I make baby quilts for NIN, and a wonderful woman in Columbia, Missouri, donated two boxes and two big bags of fabric scraps for me to use in future quilts. I'm so excited to receive all of this great material!
Some of the scraps are samples of home decorating fabrics. I read on the margins of several pieces that they are 100% cotton. Some looks like "polished" cotton, and other pieces do not. Most are light and neutral colors - beige, tan, white, etc. Some have plaid prints, floral designs, or stars on them.
Would it be OK to incorporate these scraps in baby quilts? Of course I would not use anything that feels itchy or scratchy to the touch. I think that the laundering should be compatible with other cotton materials. I already ran a bunch of them through the washer and dryer, and they came out fine.
What do you think? I just wanted to check in before I start using these.
Thanks, and have a great day!

I love the decorating panel samples. That fabric is wonderful to make tote bags for diaper bags for our mothers and yes, the fabric can be incorporated into baby quilts.

There is such comfort in the good news that the gospel brings and solace in knowing our little ones are safe, happy and waiting for us to join them when it is our time to return home to God.
Many of the NIN volunteers are here to bring love, peace and assistance to others who are experiencing infant demise. You sound like a kind compassionate lady. I hope you check out our website at www.newbornsinneed.org and find a chapter nearest you to become a part of. Understanding hands can heal broken hearts as they sew and donate tiny burial layettes for other mothers. Knowing that a stranger is offering love at such a difficult time can heal deep wounds with God's help.

Kat posted a question this morning and I did not want it to get overlooked as it was attached to some older posts. Here is what she asked...
what kind of edging do you put on these fleece baby blankets if they are only one thickness???
I know there are quite a few here who do fleece blankets so I am sure we can help her.
Thanks ladies!

If we are trying to keep them simple, we just serge the edges, or simply fold over and stitch. We have done several projects with Girl Scout troops and they love to fringe two edges and leave the other two edges plain. Hope that helps!

At the convention this year Jennifer Wharton did a class on fleece blankets. It was single thickness. She used a fisker 1/16 hole punch and rounded the corners of the blanket and crocheted around the blanket. Then you can do a row of shells or other chrochet patterns. I knit more than crochet but I have tried it and was very happy with the results. If you have other questions feel free to e-mail me.

I saw your information about using the hole punch for fleece before crocheting the edges.
I have tried to use a hole punch and it left pieces of the fleece and
did not cut all the way through.
Is there a trick to doing this?
Thanks for your help.

Jennifer (who did the convention class) said she had tried quite a few different types of hole punches and the only one that worked for her was the purple handled Fisker 1/16 hole punch.
We all tried it at convention and it worked really great. Perhaps you were using a different brand??

Sorry I haven't been here on the message board for a while. Things got a little crazy after convention and then I had some major email problems. Luckily that has all been straightened out and I'm back........LOL.
Convention was terrific and the Madison's Angels chapter did a really great job. The venue was decorated beautifully - angels were everywhere. The classes covered a whole range of topics and had something for everyone. The speakers they arranged were informative, helping us remember why what we do is so important. The country club was a beautiful setting for our banquet and special entertainment had been arranged for us. A huge "Thank You!" to our hostesses for putting on such a great convention and making us all feel so welcome, and to the teachers who shared their special talents and inspired us all.
It is hard to believe convention was almost 2 months ago. I have so many projects I want to try.
So, what has everyone else been doing? I'd love to hear what you all have been up to.
Hugs,
Mary/Seattle

Glad you are back Mary. I also had a wonderful convention experience. I'm back to crocheting- at one point I had used up all of my yarn stash. (gasp!) I have made a few of the crocheted edged fleece blankets from the convention class demo. And having fun with sewing, making baby quilts. I am slowly working my way through the fabric stash, and have a few boxes of quilts ready for the upcoming fall and holiday season. What about everyone else out there??
Posted on Jun 27, 2007, 9:08 AM from IP address 66.167.220.206
The crochet edging on fleece blankets sounds interesting and something I might like to try. How do you get started - that is, how do you attach the crochet to the blanket?
Posted on Jun 27, 2007, 4:40 PM from IP address 209.40.130.202
I have been without a computer for a while ....instructions given by Jennifer from the convention were roughly:
Using a 1/16 inch Hand punch to make holes around the entire edge of the fleece piece about 1/2 to 3/8 inch apart. Place the fleece as far into the hole punch as able. (Best to get a Fiskars Hand Punch with the purple grip handle as easier and cushioned grip. The hand punch can be found in the paper crafting / scrapbooking sections of craft stores.)
Suggested to use a F/G/H size crochet hook. Make a slip knot, but do not put the slip knot on the hook yet. Insert the crochet hook through a hole and pull the slip knot through. Start to single crochet around the edge. The fleece edge will roll over as working around. Can add a second or third row, doing a scallop or shell edge. Hide knots and yarn ends under teh stitching and rolled fleece edge.
Can mail the direction sheets from convention if needed.

Thank you for your reply - I hadn't thought about using a hole-punch on fleece. I did find that I could use a wing needle (without thread)on flannel and it would make holes just about right for a 6 or 8 steel crochet needle, and using cotton thread makes a nice lacy edge. (I serged the edges first to keep it from raveling.)

I do not own a serger machine. So many of the newborn clothing patterns are fashioned with serger instructions. I was very happy to have a new pattern/idea that did not require a serger.

Hi Mary,
We met at convention. I said I would let you know we do read the message board so you are not talking to yourself. I have been busy since convention with my garden and trying new patterns. I especially enjoyed the crochet fleece blanket and the quilt demo. Take care, I enjoyed meeting so many at convention.

I LOVED convention. Arletta Jones and her volunteers from the Madison Angels Chapter in Bolivar, MO did a fabulous job at making the NIN convention one of the best events of the year.
Classes were superb and I learned so much. The love and caring shown by all the volunteers to each other and the babies we serve was the source of renewed energy and dedication to NIN as we all left with 'recharged batteries" and looking forward to next year's convention.
Be sure to plan to attend next year, you will be so glad you did.

I had looked at the patterns and what I wanted is not there. In reading some of the older messages, I had noticed someone was making diaper covers from the Pro Care material from Wazoodle and it looked interesting. I was just wondering if there was a pattern out there that someone could share or tell me where to get one. Thanks.

I am new at sewing and would like to make some diaper shirts. Should I use a stretchy material like T-shirt quality or can I make them out of cotton or polyester?
Posted on May 19, 2007, 12:03 PM from IP address 209.40.130.209
Here at the national office, we have many different types of materials used to make the diaper shirts. Some folks use stretchy material and others don't. I can assure you that no matter what type of material you use, we can find a baby to put it on

BUT the knit fabric make beautiful Hats!

We would like to thank each one of you who attended the 2007 convention for your time with us. We had a great time hosting convention this year.
We hope you enjoyed the classes, the speakers, the food, the banquet, the entertainment and each other's company. We hope you took some new ideas home with you and are ready to put those ideas to use sewing for the little ones.
It was our wish that our guest speakers would touch your hearts and make you feel inspired and proud of what you do.
We would like to give a very special thanks to those chapters who donated their baby items to our chapter. We appreciate your generosity.
We feel our chapter is blessed with some great volunteers and we were happy to share them with you for a few days.
It was great to see your familiar faces again. We look forward to seeing you in Ohio next year!
Thank you for who you are and what you do for the babies and children. So many families can be blessed when we work together.

It was a great convention, and thanks to all of Madison's Angels and the things that they did to make everyone feel at home and very special. I came back all pumped up and ready to share everything with all of the volunteers. The speakers either made us all laugh or we sure could have used some tissues. I thought that Arleta's daughter in law touched all of our hearts and gave us a front row seat to why we do what we do. Thanks to all of Madison's Angels for the wonderful time and the Christian fellowship that renews our souls. Judy, Springfield Missouri Chapter

Mary, I have been putting off talking about the weather as Missouri weather is so unpredictable! The best forecast I have right now is next week Monday high of 83 and low of 56, Tues high of 78 and low of 60, Wed high of 82 and low of 58. No rain forecasted on those days. They haven't put out anything for the end of the week yet. I hope those temps continue throughout the weekend and it will be absolutley beautiful for you all. I would be sure to pack a jacket as the evenings will be cool. We get our weather forecasts out of Springfield, MO so if you can pull up weather on the internet from Springfield that will be as close as you can get. I will post you again at the first of next week with a weather update.
Hopefully the sun will shine on us!
See you in ONE WEEK!

The Wrights company has changed their bias tape products. At first I thought it was only the new packaging. However the colors do not match despite comparing the same color numbers and quality of the bias tapes/ quilt bindings is of a thinner material. Be on the lookout and buy enough of the old product to complete your projects, if able.

Thanks for the warning! I just bought some the other day. Now I am wondering if it is the "new" type of tape. Guess I better check. Good thing this does not need to match something that I have already started.
Don't you just hate when they mess with a good thing?

There is a definite difference in the packaging. You can tell the old vs new package.
Yeah- I was bummed with the quality of the new product. I'll use up what stash I have on hand and then learn how to make my own bindings.

We buy most of ours from a company called Home Sew, it is the best bargain that we have found. If you buy $100.00 or more from them at a time, you get a 25% discount. It comes in 72 yard rolls and lots of colors, about $15.00 for 72 yards, white is the least expensive.

Just now noticed the response. Thanks Judy. I will investigate. A local Hancock's fabric store is closing, I bought every package of quilt binding they had left @ 60% off early in the first week of the sale. I am hoping I have enough for a while?? However I have been sewing much more since the convention, determined to get my fabric stash sewn up.

Hi, I am a 64 year old black grandmother living in an all white community in Wisconsin. I saw your ad while downloading crochet patterns for babies and kids from the Craftown site. All I do these days is crochet outfits I see in magazines for my grandchildren. In February,my youngest son's baby girl was born 5 weeks early. She had heart problems(stop breathing when sleeping) but could bring herself out of it and start breathing again. When she went home, she had to be put on a monitor so that the hospital could keep tabs on her breathing. She is getting better but still stops breathing sometimes. One of my daughter-in-laws is an RN and works in OB> at the hospital. She asked me to crochet come things for preemies and stillborns which I did. I would like to be of help . I love to crochet and I can also knit. However, I crochet most of the time because it goes faster and I can get more done.let me know what is needed and I will try my best to do it. I would like to design my own but I lack the knowledge of what is meant about 'original' I never follow directions word for word and incorporate other stitches that I have learned into whatever I'm crocheting..I've also been trying to find someone who can tell me how to repair double crochet stitches. I made identical dresses for two of my grandchildren and I noticed that one of the dresses has a rip in it that takes up 3rows. If you know of anyone please give them my email address....Thank You

Can anyone use fleece. If I remember correctly it is red or blue with names of football teams on them. I would say they are at least 1 yard each. Maybe 4 or 5 pieces. I will send it out to the first person who wants it.
My husband passed away suddently on April 2 at age 67. I must turn my attention to more pressing issues at this time so I have to start getting rid of some stuff. This is such a difficult time and sometimes I just don't know where to start so the first thing my hand touches goes.
I am sure that God will give me the strength to get thru this but since I wasn't at home when it happened, I blame myself for not being there. A guilt trip is horrible.

My dear Georgia,
My heart goes out to you, as do my prayers. I am so sorry for your loss. First your dad and now your husband. Tragic. I have wanted to contact you for some time, please E-mail me (I don't have your e mail address). I need to talk to you. If no one else wants the fleece, I will find some use for it. Hang in there dear, this too shall pass with God's help.

It is official, there are 67 volunteers registered for convention! We have at least 11 chapters represented from 8 states! We are looking forward to meeting new friends and seeing familiar faces from conventions past. Remember that when you come to register and set up your displays Thursday evening from 5pm to 7pm, you can also visit with Jennifer, who will be giving quilting demonstrations and she will be available to answer questions. Jennifer is a professional quilter, it is our treat to have her at our convention. Jennifer will also be teaching a quilting class on Friday and a crocheting on fleece class on Saturday. Sounds like fun!
Be sure to get your baby/child pictures to us asap and your dinner selections to us by April 10.
Convention is just around the corner...see you in four weeks!

Hello! Just a couple of notes regarding convention. At this point we have around 70 people registered, give or take a couple. We are going through the final list so I will post a final number this week for you as soon as I have it. You will need to know how many are registered if you are participating in SWAPS. If you have not attended convention before, SWAPS is where you bring a little something to trade with everyone on the last day of convention. In the past we have traded things such as bookmarks, pens, pencils, a poem, candy, magnets etc. It can be something useful or something funny. Just use your imagination! If everyone registered brings something to trade, you can go home with around 70 extra little goodies from convention!
Also, if you are registered and have not turned in your dinner menu selection, please do so no later than April 10th so we can get our dinner orders turned in for our banquet.
We are so excited, convention is getting close! We hope you are looking forward to it as well! See you then! Monica
