KNIT FOR PREEMIES? IN CANADA (Ottawa)
by
Hello everyones, I live in Rockland, Ontario, near Ottawa, I would like to knit or crochet for preemies and donate my work to an organisation or an hospital near me, for preemies in need, it can be in Montreal or Outaouais region in Quebec and East Ontario. But I can't find such organisation, if there's preemies in need in the US they should have some in Canada!!!!
I am in a craft group and I am sure I am not the only one who would like to participate!!!
Thanks Anik

I am sure that you are correct about there being preemies in Canada too. Because Newborns In Need is a US based charity organization we do not have chapters outside of the US, and not many contacts in other counties.
Often hospitals here have guilds or volunteer groups that work specifically with a particular hospital. You could check with your local hospitals to see if there is a volunteer coordinator who could point you in the right direction or help you connect with others in your area who are doing this already.
Good luck in your search.

We are busy working out plans for convention 2007! We are getting excited and although May seems a way off, we all know how time flies by! I would encourage anyone attending convention to take a little extra time and do some sight seeing as we have some beautiful country here in the Ozarks and a lot of fun things to do! Please send in your registrations if you are planning to attend, there are forms on this website that you can download. We hope to see you there! Monica/Madison's Angels

A question about items for the Christmas stockings. Must the combs and brushes be individually wrapped? There are some good buys on ebay for quantities of these items but some are in plastic containers (new) but not wrapped. thanks
Posted on Aug 29, 2006, 5:31 PM from IP address 68.162.43.12
The only item for the stockings that needs to be individually wrapped would be the toothbrushes. For sanitary reasons they can not be just placed in the stockings. Combs and brushes are fine unwrapped.

I just wanted to let you all know that TeLesa has updated the stocking stuffer page for us. It is so exciting to see that we are well on the way to our goal of filling 1800 stockings.
Hello Everyone,
I live in Wisconsin and just a few weeks ago heard about this site. I would like to know what and where is the greatest need for baby things. I go to garage sales all the time and pick up yarn and they always have tons of baby clothes for next to nothing. I would love to box up baby things and send them where the greatest need is. I also crochet baby afghans. Please let me know where I can help.
Thank you

I sure wish there was an easy answer to your questions, but the truth is that unfortunately there is a need for items almost everywhere, and no one location is more critically in need than another. I do try to keep everyone updated as to what home office needs the most but any items are welcome and very much appreciated.
There is a chapter in Wisconsin but I am not sure how close that is to where you are located. I am sure they would be very happy to receive your donations. Home Office can always use items too, they do not have anyone dedicated to producing items just for them and are reliant on donations they receive.
This time of year, as we are headed into fall and winter the need would be for whatever can keep a baby warm. It is hats, blankets, afghans, quilts...and I am sure a lot of things I can't think of off the top of my head.
We are excited to have you helping us.
Hugs,
Mary/Seattle

As I have already told you, I don't know anything about knitting but I did ask on our NIN yahoo group to see if any of the ladies there could assist with this question. Here is one response that I received:
_____________________________________________________________________________
Hi TeLesa ... my educated guess is 20 stitches = 4". With the number of stitches cast on for the infant size hat it would come out to 13" in diameter ... which I think is about right for newborn size.
Hope this helps!
Blessings,

Dear Santana,
What a big heart you have!
Every item you send will help a little one. It is a very empowering thing, to know what you do DOES make a difference.
Stop in often here and see what everyone is up to. mary puts a notice every so often of things home office is in need of so we know what is most urgent.
You will inspire others too, thanks in advance!

Just a quick note to let you know the home office has been having all sorts of phone problems today (Monday). Looks like the circuits in the area are down so no land lines, no cell service, and no internet! Can you imagine the withdrawls those poor women must be going through
If you have tried with no success to reach home office today please try again in the morning. Hopefully all will be back to normal by then.
Thanks!

Yes, it is very hard to work when a baby enters the building but you are correct - it is rewarding to see, sometimes hold, and even photograph these sweet angels! I just love sharing these times with everyone on this message board and our yahoo group.
Thank you so much for your prayers. I always worry at this time of the year when donations slow down but I also have faith that God will see us through

I just wanted to email you and request that you keep us in your prayers. This is the time of year when cash donations as well as donations of items slow down to a small trickle but the need is still great. Our shelves at the national office are getting bare and we are scrounging for donations to send to the babies who need them. One day last week, we just didn't have the clothing that was needed for a set of twins so we were forced to go to Wal-Mart and buy what was needed. I have posted a "we need you" message on the front page of our website but I think that your prayers can also help.
I don't want to alarm anyone because I am sure that we will prevail through this tough time. I have faith that NIN will be able to continue helping babies when there is a need but I am also certain that we can't do it alone. We really do need you! If you could please pray for us and the babies that we serve, we would be most grateful
Love,
TeLesa

Just wanted to post a quick message to all of you to let you know home office is running short on a couple of items. Urgently needed are receiving blankets and undershirts/diaper shirts. The supply on hand will go very quickly.
We are OK on the onesies and the requests coming in are for the diaper shirt style because they are easier for the nurses.
Your help is sure appreciated - thank you!

I am excited to let you know we have a new update on the stocking stuffers. Wonderful holiday donations are starting to come in and I wanted to share the new totals with you.
I just wanted to give you an update from Home Office. I'm sure that most of you have either met or at some point corresponded with Mary Hoffman either at convention or through email. Mary lives in Washington but she is considered a Home Office volunteer since there is no chapter in her area. I have known Mary for years and I really enjoy working with her. She is enthusiastic, hard-working, and very dedicated to helping us serve God's tiniest children. Over the years, Mary has assisted us with messages going through the yahoo groups and our NIN message board along with many other tasks (which include making baby hats although I don't know where she finds the time).
Well, we have finally given Mary a well deserved title of Communications Coordinator. She works very closely with us here at the national office and can many times answer any question that you may have due to her extensive work with us in previous years. I simply don't know what I would do without her!
Thanks again Mary for all your hard work and dedication!
Hugs,

TeLesa and the holiday elves in the home office have updated the stocking stuffer page for us. Check it out and see the progress we have made already! All of us working together are going to make some children very happy this year.
I am not a crochet person but came across this website that has a free pattern posted every day. The only catch is you have to get the pattern on that day or it is gone. You may already know about this site, but in case you don't I am posting the link below.
Today the pattern is for the most darling little doll in a bunting - toally done in crochet. It even come in three sizes. If you think you might want to do some of these to donate later for the stocking project check it out at the link below, just make sure and get it today. They are copywrited and cannot be shared later.
This pattern is available any time on freepatterns.com in case you missed it on the other web site. It makes a cute doll, but it is a bit tedious to make.

Can the small dolls for the stockings be crocheted or should they be store bought? There's a cute pattern at Bev's website for a doll and bear. I think they're about 7" tall.
Thanks.
Dianne

The dolls and toys for the stocking definitely can be crocheted or knit. I know Bev always has great patterns, I keep forgetting to check and see what she new ones she has added. Another site with some cute items is a new one I just found.
They have a number of charity patterns including hats, blankets and toys. I fell in love with the sewn flannel dolls and I am going to try to make a few from the scraps of flannel I have in my stash. I think I am going to reduce the pattern a little since it makes a 14 inch doll.
Hope you have a great weekend.

Thanks, Mary. I checked out the site you mentioned and the flannel dolls are so cute. The bears are, too. I'll crochet some little dolls and bears. I might even make some of the little sewn bears and flannel dolls. Good way to use up small pieces of flannel. Thanks again for your help and posting the website. Have a great week-end.

Hi Mary - I have e-mailed you a picture of the stuffed bunny that I make from the Carewear pattern. I make these out of fleece or flannel - to be given out at the local hospital and also for our volunteers to take on mission trips to Honduras. They are really easy and fast to make and the small children love them.

I read all the info on your site about the babies and just started crying. I go to thrift sales all the time and see tons of baby stuff in excellent condition. I also buy yarn that people have at thrift sales. I would be thrilled to pick up some newborn receiving blankets-sleepers in excellent condition and send them to you. I also printed off some of your baby afghan patterns and will be crocheting some blankets I will send. It isn't much but I hope whatever I can do to help will matter to someone.
Thank God for people like you in this world.

I am so glad that you found us! Welcome to Newborns In Need. When I first came across the NIN website it moved me to tears too, and even after being with NN for more than 6 years it often still does. These babies and families deal with so much, it tugs at your heartstrings.
We would love to have you crocheting for us and checking out the thrift shops for gently used items, every single item really DOES make a difference to a baby. They have gotten to know me pretty well at my local Goodwill. It really is like a treasure hunt and I just love a good deal.
Welcome!

I am excited to announce the details of our annual Christmas stocking project. I am hoping that by starting to talk about Christmas in July it will help those of you in the Midwest and on the East Coast think "cool" thoughts while you are enduring yet another bout of exceptionally hot temperatures.
Each year Newborns In Need steps outside of the boundaries of its primary mission of helping premature and disadvantaged newborns by supplying the basic needs at no charge to those who need our assistance. At Christmas, stockings are also provided for older children within these families, and to other children through social service and other support agencies. These are children who very possibly will receive no other gifts during the holiday season.
Our goal this year is 1800 stockings, slightly up from last year, but I am confident we can do it. I am excited to report that people have already very generously been sending in items to home office and we already have ALL of the stockings that we will need, allowing us to concentrate this year on items to put in the stockings.
In each stocking we would like to include a coloring book, crayons, stocking hat or scarf, toothbrush, travel size toothpaste, comb or hairbrush, and perhaps gloves or mittens. We would like for each stocking to have 10 items so they are filled to the top with goodies for these children! The age target for these items would be from ages 3-11. We also do some newborn stockings but those are more easily put together from items that are more routinely donated - but please feel free to send items for those stockings too.
As we did last year, a chart has been created to help keep track of the items we receive and what is still needed. CJ and Mary in the home office have spent the past couple of weeks counting (thank you ladies!) and the link below will take you to that page on our website. It was updated today so you can see how far we have come, and what items we will be needing help with.
There are just a couple of new guidelines this year. The social services workers have asked that we not include scissors, glue, or soap in the stockings for the children. There are health and liability issues we had not considered in the past and know you will understand.
Thank you all for supporting this project in past years. I know we are going to have another successful year and make the holidays brighter for a lot of special children!
Hugs,
Mary/Seattle

Thank you so much for sending out this information. I just updated the stocking page again today if anyone wants to have a look at what we have now http://www.newbornsinneed.org/stockingcount/. We are so grateful to all the folks who wanted to get an early start this year. I'm sure the stocking project will be a huge success and we'll meet our goal!

Thanks for asking about the Christmas project. There will definitely be a project this year, it will again be the stocking project we have done for the past few years.
I am working with TeLesa in the home office to get a count of exactly what we will need to meet our goal of 1800 stockings full of items for children who may not have anything else this holiday season. I'll be posting it all soon but in the meantime if anyone is hitting those great back-to-school sales I know we definitely will be needing crayons.
Another of the items we had a very difficult time getting last year was small dolls for little girls so if you see those in the stores they would be great to start picking up now too.
Look for all the details very soon.
Hugs,
Mary/Seattle

I know I'm new here, but I believe every little bit helps, so I'm asking if you would add a little word in your daily prayers for my son. He is 5 mo. old with some possible hearing problems and having to get tubes this week. Mommy is very nervous about him being put to sleep, so a lot of angel power would be appreciated. This is very hard because my mom just passed away April 1st after sailing through a "routine" procedure. Thank you, Beth

Beth, please know that many prayers will be said for your son. Even if not all who read the message board respond many will offer a prayer. I will personally say a prayer for your son. I will be watching the message board. Let everyone know how your procedure turns out. God's blessing to you and your son.

Beth,
My son had the same problem, but he was 2 months old when he got his first set of tubes placed. I how hard it is as a mother to let them do anything to your baby. I will keep you and your son in my prayers. If he has a favorite blanket or toy take it with you, they usually let them take it to surgery with them, that helps a lot.

My son did fantastic. The doctor was pleased. He has not seemed to have any after problems except one day of being fussy. But when we got home thursday I found out that my godfather had died suddenly. So back to WV for another funeral. I got to visit my mothers grave before the service. It was incredibly hard, but I'm glad I did it. Thank you all for your prayers last week. Our family appreciates them!!!
