since that time, they have all been traditional inline configurations.
Definitely, the E30 and the E21 before it as well as all successive models have had only inline engines. It's kind of a holdover and a hallmark that BMW capitalizes on

It is easy to see the 'boxer' configuration with the crank shaft running from front to rear as opposed to a transverse configuration which has the crank at 90 degrees from the line of the car.
