Hi!
There seem to be some people here interested in outdoor activities. Here is one that isn't very common in most places in the world.

Me and my brother, while visiting our mother's house, went out on the frozen lake skating with the skates strapped on boots. Sort of boots, they are fine for walking. My brother who is a nut for theese kind of things has got some special plastic boots. I use my old leather ones.

Nice weather and minimal with snow.

Yours truly:

My brother:

He looks dissapointed with me since:

[img][linked image][/img]

That above is me faceplanting, to protect the watch, that survived without a scratch!

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

He skated in circles around me...

[img][linked image][/img]

Nothing to do but keep skating in to the sunset. We skated for about 10 miles south west until we came to a village in we phoned for pickup. It's more fun if you avoid headwinds...

[img][linked image][/img]

At home some glühwein warmed us before dinner. Outside it was 5 degrees F.
A great mini vacation.

View from kitchen window:

Thanks for looking.

Very cool.

Looks like you need to run the Zamboni out there though! 10 miles? That was a great workout no doubt!

Where do you live? This is as close as we get to snow in Georgia...silly really but fun for the kids.

Of course you did a face plant.  Your skate blade came off !  Great shot though.  Glad you AND watch were not seriously injured.  Curious, what is that bright orange thing around your brothers neck?

My getting out yesterday was playing tennis w/ temps of approx 54 degrees.  Brrr ... hahaha ... northern California versus Sweden I guess.

Thanks for the mini vacation.  Enjoyed it.

They are, in lack of a better word, a sort of

circular daggers. Like big awls. You use them if the ice is to thin and you fall into the water. The ice itself gives no grip for your hands. So a pair of awls are pretty much essential if you want to come back up again. Before you freeze to death. Takes about three to four minutes if struggeling.

I have gone through the ice once, but only to the waist down and my companions could use a safety line (they are packed in the orange thingies on our backpack, everyone MUST have one since you can't throw it while in water) to pull me up.
New clothes (also a must have in the backpack, which if it is properly air-sealed packed also work as an flotation device) were changed into and I was fine for the rest of the ride, albeit not skating in the front any more that day...

Kindly

What are the orange handle bars hanging from your neck for? Mustache extensions? Attachments for dragging a sleigh? Cleverly disguised oxygen bottles (which I would need after too much of this kind of exercise)? Some new and too cool (for me that is) type of oakleys? double sided schnapps containers (hey it beats bringing a Saint Bernard along). wink.gif

Thanks for the explanation. You guys seem very well prepared for what seems like a casual day of skating - to someone unfamiliar with lake skating that is. Thanks for the explanation.

I assume those orange things hanging around your necks are used to crawl out of a water hole should you fall thru the ice?

great day at the lake!Thank you for sharing that
Funny skates you got there, I had the cheapo version when I was a kid, we would tie them to our boots (I'm in Quebec)and we would take the drapes from the house with a broom stick and kinda parasail... Lol. great memories you brought back!

I love the view from your kitchen!

terrific pics. But I have to ask you this...........>>>>>

January 5 2009, 7:58 PM

>>>>in the 2nd picture, there is the reflection of the horizon on your shades yet I can`t see a camera or a hand holding a camera. The picture looks like it was taken at the eye level; the slightly curved shape of the shades allows a rather big angle of a mirror like reflection (fish eye effect) yet I can`t see any camera that was used to take that shot. So, how was that pic taken?

Good question:

It was taken by me. I had the camera slightly tilted upwards to avoid huge camera reflections in the glasses.
But positioning alone was not sufficient.
A black reflection was indeed there above the nose bridge. Pretty small though, maybe one centimetre wide and going up to the black horizon line. I took it away rather hastily in photoshop, to make the picture look like I intended it. Not a very orthodox photographic strategy, but nor am I wink.gif
