sports here in the USA, most all schools across the country had soccer teams, and then the American game of Football came into its light, the popularity of Soccer kind of faded away from how it was known but thankfully it did continue on.
The USA has always had a highly ranked Soccer team internationally, though not as well known in the whole big-picture of the sport as some other well known international teams from Europe and South America.
Hip Hip Hurray USA,

You just call it "soccer" to differentiate it from American Football which is primarily played with the hands so far as I can tell.
According to Wikipedia "Football is governed internationally by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (International Federation of Association Football), commonly known by the acronym FIFA."
Well done, hope you go further.

...and football "soccer". I don't mind the term soccer at all - it's the only one that doesn't need qualification (football is still strictly known as "association football", from where the mutation soccer comes, as any fule kno ).

nationality would call their sport "football". "Rugby Union Football", or maybe "Rugby Football", but not "football"!
You are right, "soccer" is correctly known as "Association Football" hence my reference to FIFA: Fédération Internationale de Football Association (International Federation of ASSOCIATION Football).
It's always seemed very strange to me that a ball game which allows the ball to be handled should be called football? Maybe that's because I'm a "fule" (sic)?
Kind regards
Dave
