Response to small scale diorama help

Trevor-
I was recently at one of the local hobby shops in my area that specializes in small scale trains, scenery, and the like but also sells military models. I noticed that they carried an extensive array of wooden balsa wood in small, thin sections. Perhaps, with some experimenting and some good weathering you could simulate the trenches. Another option would be styrene strips that could be textured with a simple sanding pad and then painted, weathered, etc. Best of luck, and post some pics of the dio of your in progress and complete trenches.
