Help Painting Cobbles & Stonework

I'm doing a dockside dio with a cobbled quayside and a stone dock wall. Everytime I paint cobbles or stone it always ends up looking too grey/black, with very few of the other colours seen in these types of masonary. Any help/advice on how to go about getting realistic finishes on these items would be greatly appreciated.
