Response to Make up of French roads in towns in WW2 ?

I once read (don't recall the name of the book; it was about the 2nd SS Panzer's march toward Normandy, and the associated atrocities) that in 1944 the Germans had to devote enormous resources to patchng rural routes, usually paved with tarmac that disintegrated under heavy traffic. The small, isolated road crews were constant (and unremembered)targets of the Resistance.

Cobblestones - beloved of modelers - were holdovers from prior centuries, and mainly limited to larger towns.

I once did an article for FineScale Modeler about doing tarmac roads. The process is slow, but does a pretty good job of replicating a worn and patched tarmac surface.
