Response to F J Uniforms

For whatever reason a lot of photographs that I have seen from the 4th battle of Cassino show "green devils"
without the smocks. Just wearing a combination of different types of FJ uniform. Is it possible that due to constant pressure from the Allies and losses, decimated platoons were combined into ad hoc units and thus the variety of uniforms?

Unfortunately I don't have any colour photographs of FJ from that period.
