Hi

I wanted to ask you whether it would be possible
to make a "Battle of the Bulge" diorama
with a King Tiger with a Porsche turret?

Greetings Michel Ruiter

Not that I've seen

All the photos I have ever seen of Tiger IIs in the Bulge have shown the Henschel turret. Best place to ask would be on the Axis forum, see if you can draw James Blackwell's attention. The expert should know. Or Stephan de Meyer. I think.

Possible

Michel,

It's possible. There were only 50 Tiger II's produced with the Porsche turret. According to Encyclopedia of German Tanks;

"The first Tiger II were issued to training units in February and May 1944. The first deliveries to combat units did not take place until June 1944, five months after production had started. ...all Tiger II were issued to the independent schwere Panzer detachments of the Army and SS."

Again, it's possible. All available tanks that could be mustered were thrown together for the Battle of the Bulge.

HTH,
Steve

But not likely

January 15 2002, 7:59 PM

Most, if not all, Tiger IIs with Porsche turrets had been used up in the Normandy battles and in Holland. In the Bulge, only the VI Panzer Armee was allocated Tiger IIs as corps assets with the assignment of schwere Panzer Abteilung 301, and the SS schwere Panzer Abteilung 501 (Wittmann's old unit in Normandy, formerly numbered 101). They were assigned to this northern sector because that was where the expected breakthrough to the Meuse was to occur, under the command of Jochen Peiper's Kampfgruppe. When he was stopped cold at Trois Points and La Gleize, the few surviving armor elements were transferred south to the V Panzer Armee under Hasso von Manteuffel, who was making greater headway. They were likely all destroyed in actions north and east of Bastogne, and around St-Vith.

As I've said earlier, in all the photos I have seen of Tiger IIs in the Bulge, NONE have had the Porsche turrets, so you'd be much safer if you went with the production version.

Porsche

You're most likely correct, Lynn, since there were only 50 built of the Porsche type. Since the Falaise Pocket chewed up a lot of armor, those fifty were probably rusting hulks by Dec '44.

48 rusting hulks...

Bovington Tank Museum has an example of Tiger 2 with Wegmann (Porsche) turret on display, I think it is either a prototype or pre production model.
