According to the Radio Times, of all sources, there were apparently plans afoot during Harold Wilson's government for a military coup to replace him with Lord Louis Mountbatten, because of fears we would slide cloer to the USSR. There was a fun mocked up photo of London Bridge, with the Houses of Parliament in the background, absolutely smothered with Conqueror and Centurion tanks.

Interesting, no?

To keep wilson in, or out?...

Yes, interesting. When I was visiting Scotland in '02 there were photos taken of a film being made about what would have happened if Hitler had conquored England, and Nazis and some armor were shown in various parts of London that any hick from Mississippi (me) would recognize. That was interesting, as well, but strictly science fiction, like the Rocketeer Nazis in 1:35 scale being blistered in various parts of this website!

When was Mountbatten murdered? Who was responsible?

Cliff,
The conspiracy theory (all the rage in the seventies!) was that the military thought (for strange implausible reasons) Harold Wilson was not just 'too' left wing, but possibly a Soviet plant!

If memory serves, Mountbatten was murdered in the late senventies by the IRA. They blew up his boat, killing two children who happened to be with him at the time.

Al
