Response to Maureen Dowd

My only comment on her article is that I wish she had not invoked the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV). If you have family history in the south, chances are you have an ancestor who served on the Confederate side of the Civil War, and, despite losing and being on the wrong side of history, their service does deserve remembrance - and those in the SCV do a great job of protecting cemetery markers of soldiers, and so forth. Sure, there are probably racists in their ranks, but I think we can honor the soldiers even if, as we look back, their cause was doomed to fail.

The problem I have with invoking this group is that she used it immediately after thinking she almost heard, "You lie, boy." With "boy" substituting the real word meant which starts with an N.

I'm willing to bet that most members of the SCV are not red-neck racists as she might think. Or at least I hope not.

Nevertheless, I agree with her statement: "Some people just can’t believe a black man is president and will never accept it."

This is only too true, and I don't think it has anything to do with South Carolina. Racism knows no boundaries.
