that temperature changes can play havoc with the point of impact due to lubricant thickening/thinning. This point was brought forcefully home at the last offhand FT shoot I attended in VA. The day started of COLD (low 30s) and ended up in the 50s. My brother and I zero'd our R9s and were hitting plastic golfballs regularly at 35-40 yards. Then we started the 60 shot match after about 1/2 hour of "jawin around" and were having trouble hitting anything! After half the match was over we got permission to check our zero on an empty lane. MAN, BUMMER, both of our guns were shooting 1" low and to the left or right (mine was hitting low right and my brothers was hitting low left) at only 20 yards!!! After the sighting correction we did start hitting a few targets, but the handwriting was on the wall. One of the guys we were shooting with didn't even sight in his HW97 before the shoot and he hit 41/60 on that very blustery day, and he had NO POI shift that we could tell. Well, we found out that Frank only uses the barest amount (just a thin film) of molly paste on just behind the piston seal for "chamber lube". He also uses a thin film of JM velocity tar on the rear half of the spring only.
He claims that the tar from the rear of the spring will eventually migrate to the inside of the piston and front of the spring just by shooting the gun. Anyway, since then my brother and I have stripped out the excess goop in our R9 and re-lubed sparingly as instructed by Frank, our guns are shooting a lot more consistently! Another thing we did was to nix the velocity tar on the spring guide in favor of a light coat of molly paste. Well, the proof in the pudding is how the "micro lubed" R9s shoot, and we're very pleased. We really haven't done any long term tests yet because we just met Frank 2 weeks ago, but so far it all looks very promising. De-twanged guns are great to shoot, but if the POI is always changing due to the "de-twang", then I prefer a twangy one!
