BSA Tactical 4-14x44 scope review

I just received this scope from Midway. They were on sale for $250, normally $400 and had pretty good reviews. I've been shopping for a scope for my upcoming Mrod bullpup project and really like the Hawke Sidewinder Tactical 4.5-14 but it's a $400+ scope. This has the same features plus is a FFP scope. So, I took a chance. It arrived double boxed with a bunch of air bags between the boxes.

The scope is large but not as large as most of the others I was looking at. Same with weight. It measures 13.375" long and weighs right at 24 ounces. 30mm tube. See picture. About 1" longer than the Leapers 3-9x32 Golden Image scope (see picture) and about 1" shorter than the full size Leapers 3-12x44 SWAT scope.

This scope seems VERY clear. Of all the scopes I have, it seems to be the clearest and has the best focus. No blurry edges or discoloration. My buddy and I own numerous Leupolds and Weavers and this is every bit as clear and crisp as them. I took these two photos on macro mode but couldn't get the camera to focus very well. The view is actually much better than the pictures show. The tires and RR tie are about 120 yards away and it's overcast outside.

The reticle is a mil-mil reticle. The turrrets are mil marked and are pretty tall, about 1.125" above the turret base. Each click of the elevation/windage turrets is 1/10 mil (about 1/10"?). The reticle has 16 holdover point below the crosshair and is very fine, clear and crisp. That should allow for plenty of holdover points for nearly every range. When you zoom out to 4X the reticle can get a little bunched up. I don't expect to be taking very many 100y shots at 4X so this shouldn't be a problem. The zoom ring is almost flush with the eye piece bell and isn't the easiest to feel or move. It's cold outside and after some time and in warmer weather it should be a bit easier to move. I would like to see it have some sort of raised "hump" on the zoom ring so feeling/moving it would be a bit easier. Overall I really like this scope based on first impressions. I'll report back once I've shot it a bunch.

Scope snobs please just read and move on. Unless you've actually seen/owned/used THIS model, you shouldn't be adding input.

I hope this helps.
