Response to The valve isn't really closed by a spring,
The spring is a very important part of the valve to also help prevent stem bounce which would waste air. If all that was needed was the pressure to keep it closed then there would be no need to use a spring at all. It would be interesting to see a complete study done on this because it is not a simple and straightforward subject. If there is no pellet to be fired the shot charge would go through quicker and therefore should allow the valve to close faster using less air.If using a heavier pellet puts back pressure on the valve and uses less air then we should all go to heavier pellets and get a better shot count. I believe that everything that happens is done in such a small amount of time that using different weight pellets has a negligible effect on the shot count, if any of you guys has the time on your hands to do some test I would be interesting in seeing them and maybe we could find out from an expert what makes the difference in shot count, other than altering the hammer and springs.
