The exhaust spring is useless to control valve bounce...the forces are way too high

Response to The spring does help.

If you use an exhaust spring heavy enough to resist reopening by a bouncing striker, your valve won't self reg nearly as well.

Valve bounce is better controlled through other means..active dampeners(HHD's) light strikers, and valve details that encourage the valve to snap shut and stay there.

Even if there's an independent reg, or when using co2, I still tune for valve self regulation..it makes for a smoother string, with less sawtooth to the curve on a reg'd gun(only the most expensive regs will hold single digit output pressures over the fill range, most inexpensive regs will approach a 50 psi variation) CO2 guns work better if they can compensate for the pressure changes that happen with temperature shifts.

In my experience, very light exhaust springs are one of the keys to a good tune.
