Has anyone tried to pump up one of these little buggers??
I am just wondering if it is possible to get a little more power out one of these tack drivers. It seems this would be a perfect black bird/starling shooter if it just was capable of about 600 or better Feet Per Second.
Let me know if any of you has put a little bigger spring or made some other changes that has improved the

Not much that can be done to them

The steel receiver 60 could be improved a little with an o-ring on the pellet probe and an extended spring guide.  You may be able to find Russ's tune on- line somewhere.  The cocking mechanism and arm are not strong enough for a heavier spring.

If you are lucky, you might get 500 fps out of them.  A guy was trying to sell one a year or so ago and he said it was doing over 700 fps.  He listed a long string of things he said he had done to it.  But, on further investigation and probing him with questions, he was using WD40 as a "power booster".

The neatest thing I have seen done to one is that Theodore Summers had Steve Corcoran make a nice laminated stock for one.  What a pretty little rifle.

I remember this guy said he was a doctor (Not Arnold)

September 2 2008, 3:16 PM

Hi Bob,

I remember the guy said he was a doctor and had everything done first class.  He mentioned a lot of things he said he had done to it.  I kept scratching my head because the things he described didn't add up to 700 fps.  I kept prodding him for more info.  I mean, if it was legit I would have bought it.  But, he finally admitted he was using WD 40 as an accelerant.  Then things made sense.  I passed on the gun.

leave it alone

September 2 2008, 2:29 PM

Most everything I've read said to leave the max V alone.
The problem is the mechanical parts are not up to more power. Things will flex and bend.

I did read that IZH did make a higher power version of the rifle, but that was only in the article. No confirmation that a higher power version was actually produced.

Do a search on the IZH 61 as this question comes up

September 2 2008, 6:40 PM

fairly often. The general consensus is the gun is a light duty medium velocity training rifle and not meant to be used as a high power high velocity gun. It's light construction will not take high stresses.

Someday, every airgun in your collection is going to belong to someone else. You only "own" them for a brief period, and then they're on the block again. Don't fret about this-it's how you got them in the first place. Think about it.

Thanks Guy's

Your answers seem to answer my questions.
It's a perfect paper puncher not any more or any less. I think I think I'll have to pass on this one,I need a little vermin killer, and want to make sure a well placed shot is the end(one shot one kill).
Although 480fps would probably do the job for want I want to use it for I do not want to see anything suffer.I'm to old and to weak(soft) to see anything immediately put down with one well placed shot.

Bob, I have

September 2 2008, 10:22 PM

a pair of '61's that I've done a basic lube tune to. Honed out the cylinder, installed new piston seals, and used JM's lubes. Made a huge difference in smoothness.

Had a suet feeder set up at about 55 feet, and when the starlings would get to squauking real loud, I could get two or three before they'd sort of realize what was going on. Follow up shots are fast with the 5 shot clip. It is very quiet, and the trigger is so good that you don't have to mess with it. Whenever I think about selling one, I reconsider, as they are quite accurate and fun to shoot. If your not going far out, they will do the job.

I own a 61 and I agree with the others just leave it as is and enjoy it. Head shots on birds under 30 feet are lethal. Beyond that use a more powerful gun.

You can't even scope it the rail is too short and no one makes a short mount for it.
