Should bluing be stripped before painting a barrel?

Poorly done. Oxpho blue won't darken it... and I have Alumahyde sitting around?

I know to rough the surface a bit and degrease well, but didn't know if removal of bluing was required. According to the Brownell's Metal Prep video, it should be removed also.

Brandon, I just completed something using Oxpho (pics)

This was before Oxpho Note that the sleeve had been polished by the previous owner. I didn't care for it, and wanted a blued barrel sleeve instead.

These are After Notice the barrel sleeve has a nice dark color

Sorry for the bad photos but I just make em in like 20 secs to show u what oxpho did here with my bluing project. There were really done in a hurry since I'm gettin dressed for work.

Thank you for taking the time this morning to get those photos. I use Oxpho and know that it generally does a pretty good job. This steel just will not take a blue well. It was done in a hot salt and still looks like crud. Believe it or not, the Oxpho did darken it ever so slightly even after the salt bath, but it's still brown and blotchy.

can just degrease it and prime and paint....make sure you use metal paint..good luck.
