Field shooting postion 152 yards FX Royale 400

I had just made a nice shot on a Starling at 78 yards from this plastic grape bin, with 18.1 grain Exacts doing 36 FPE, when I decided to try a field expediant postion at my target frame which I lased at 152 yards. My stock dope was for 31 FPE, so I estimated and dialed in 30 MOA. The target is just over the far corner of the 6 wheel Polaris' bed, the wind sock is just to the left of the target.

I held 10 inches for the 5 mph wind which turned out to be a over correction.

5 shots into 2.6 inches the lowest shot sort of ruined the group but for no bags or bipod, just holding the rifle in my hands, I will take it.

View from the target stand back up the hill to the plastic grape bins. The bins are in the center of the photo.

Paper ballistic armor

February 5 2012, 1:53 PM

When I started shooting at this target a few weeks ago, I had just the plywood sheet. At 150 yards the pellets would not penetrate all the way thru it.

Then I tried 260 yards and they would imbed only 3/4 of the pellet into the wood.

I started covering the target with paper from a huge roll of unwaxed butcher type paper and just stapeling it over each prior layer instead of tearing the prior sheet off. As the layers built up, the pellets began bouncing off. Right not about 50% bunce off the target.

I had seen a segment of Mythbusters on TV where they confirmed the myth about paper armor, true enough it does work, at least with a 18.1 grain Exact and a plywood backing.

Next week I am going to clad it in sheet metal and paint it so I can see my hits at long range.

18.1 grain Exacts doing 36 FPE

Nice shooting, looks like your Royale is a keeper. Do you find accuracy at 36 fpe better than lower power settings? I set my Royale ST barrel at 33 fpe for shot count and accuracy.

For under 100 yards I seem to get better accuracy at around 890 FPS, it came from AOA used and set for 900.

Recently I set it up a little to 940 FPS and perhaps the stars were just aligned correctly, but for better long distance shooting I think I prefer it to the lower vfelocities...

For now.

Man you are getting this long range shooting down pat Charlie! I really like your vineyard! probably not as much as the birds but close!! happy.gif You are surely stretching that lead projectile out to max! You get to hitting coons out that far they might just get mad and leave! Looking good for that FX I think we made a good choice on this one!

fx royale 400

February 5 2012, 6:26 PM

ive been playing with my first royale 400 with the regulator and i ran it all the way up to 910 fps with 18 grn jsb pellets and it wouldnt hold groups that well so i backed it back down to the 880 range and did the magazine mod and she is a lot better on accuracy, and thats comparing it to my daystate airwolf, this gun is trying to hang with it and doing a very good job of it.

That magazine mod does make a lot of difference doesn't it

February 5 2012, 7:00 PM

And it is an easy fix.

At 890 FPS, I shot 5- 12 shot groups, a full magazine each time, at 36 yards. The smallest was .20 the largest was still in the mid .50's, the average was .33. It was a real ego builder.

The only reason I have it set this high right now is I am doing the uber range thing, 150 to 260 yards.

Not that there is any practical benefit from shooting that far other than the fun of shooting and hearing the thwack almost 3 seconds later.happy.gif

I am not a bench rest shooter, I am a long range shooter by nature and a hunter first and foremost. I know some do not like the stock design of the FX Royal, and I have to say I am a classic rifle fan, I like bead cheekrest, hand cut checkering and absolutely no monte Carlo's for me. Having said that, this Royale is the easiest rifle I have had in many decades for stopping hearts from fence posts, tree trunks and grape poles.

I just works and works consistantly.
