New AOA Airforce SuperSear Installed. Pic Heavy!

I have a 4 year old Airforce Talon SS that had a stock trigger that was driving me nuts. The pull weigh of the second stage was so heavy that I would pull shots or lose my concentration and really made target shooting frustrating. With no way to adjust the stock AF trigger, I considered doing the AF trigger mod where you drill two holes into the frame, tap it for screw threads, and insert two set screws to adjust the trigger. I didn't feel comfortable with that since I don't own a drill press and worried that I might would screw my frame up. So when Stevein NC announced that he had designed and manufactured a new adjustable sear for the Airforce guns that was easy to install, I was all in.

Last weekend I installed the new sear and have put about 150 shots through the gun to test and adjust the first and second stages to my liking. I can say that it is a very good improvement over the stock AF trigger. It has lightened both stages, especially the second stage, where I can fully focus on shooting and not the trigger release. It just does the job now. Before was bad, now the trigger pull is pure simplicity. A nice first stage travel, with a crisp second stage release. Hardly know it's there now.

Here's the old sear and new AOA SuperSear side by side

The supersear has two adjustable hex screws to adjust both stages. The inner screw on the left adjusts the 1st stage and the screw on the right at the end of the sear adjusts the 2nd stage. I found that 1/4 to 1/2 incremental turns on the screws work best to dial in the pull weight for both stages. Turn CCW to lighten.

The kit from AOA comes with the sear, a heavier weight spring, and small hex wrench to adjust the sear, and detailed instructions

Note the difference in the two springs

Here's the orientation of the sear where it will be installed inside the trigger housing of the frame

and this is the retaining pin that you will need to tap out to replace the old stock sear with the new supersear, my pin took one tap to remove

[linked image]

Be sure to tap the retaining pin out in the direction towards the side of the pin that has the three small grooves in it. This is the enlarged side of the pin and if you tap it the wrong direction, you will be pushing the fat part of the pin through the frame (been there, done that) as you can see on the pins above this hole where I did a prior safety removal mod. I also use brass punches so not to mar the surface of the retaining pins.

note the old sear that still installed in the gun. It has a shorter lip on it as compared to the new sear

Here the new supersear installed. Note the two adjustment screws.

Here's what you see as you remove the trigger housing cover plate. I only have three springs since I removed the safety last summer

This is the spring that is replaced by the heavier AOA spring.

Here is the AOA spring installed. Note that the trigger blade spring is taken out and not replaced.

and a side view. Not sure the trigger blade looks rusty, just an odd camera lighting effect

and everything back together

I'll do some target shooting and post results later.

Very nice writeup, Steve. Thanks. The fact is that the way the AoA SuperSear works...

February 5 2012, 4:35 PM

...is completely different from the well-known DIY 2-screw for adjusting Airforce trigger pre-travel and over-travel. The reason is that the stock AF trigger, although advertised as a 2-stage trigger, is really only a simulated 2-stage in the sense that only the "2nd stage" actually moves the sear while the "1st stage" only compresses a pretravel spring. The 2-screw DIY mod can't - and doesn't - do anything to change that fact.

The Super, by contrast, converts the AF trigger into a completely different style of 2-stage trigger, in which both stages cooperate to do the work of moving the sear and fire the gun, much as in such classics as the Rekord.

Of course that's just theory and as they say, the proof of any good pudding (trigger) is in the eating (shooting).

Glad you like this one!
